Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can this earlier USB model scan suitable Legal originals in color and provide 200-sheet Letter print input?
Qualifies using the documented ADF and compatible historical scanner software. Its monochrome Letter print rating is 10 ppm; Legal does not fit the shorter glass.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I require automatic two-sided Letter printing?
Fails: the original driver describes manual duplex, printing even pages first and requiring paper reinstallation before odd pages. That is not an automatic duplex unit.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I scan an entire Legal original on the flatbed?
Fails: glass length is 11.7 in., supporting Letter/A4. A suitable Legal original uses the ADF; the general 14 in. scan setting must not be assigned to the glass.

The Brother DCP-1000 is an earlier three-function laser printer, copier and scanner for a deliberately compatible desktop setup. Its output is monochrome, but the scanner captures color. That distinction makes it potentially useful for keeping colored annotations or images in a file while producing ordinary black-and-white documents. It does not provide color hard copies, and the three-function model description does not add standalone fax.
Brother marks the model discontinued. The practical starting point is checking the actual computer connection, driver and scanner application rather than assuming that any device detected over USB supplies every original function. This is an interpretation of the original operating documents, not a hands-on quality or speed test.
Legal pages belong in the feeder
The ADF accepts up to 30 sheets of suitable 20 lb paper under the stated conditions. Originals can measure 5.8–8.5 in. wide and 5.8–14 in. long. Fan and stagger a suitable loose stack, place it face up with the top edge entering first, and adjust the guides. The instructions exclude stapled, taped, damaged and other unsuitable originals. A nominal 30-page limit should not be treated as permission to feed any mixed stack.
The glass is a separate route for one page at a time or a book. It accepts Letter or A4 originals up to 8.5 × 11.7 in., with the ADF empty. A full Legal page therefore needs the feeder; selecting a 14 in. scanning area in software does not lengthen the glass. For a bound or fragile Legal original that cannot travel through an ADF, a larger flatbed is the appropriate requirement.
The exact scanner specification lists 600 × 2400 dpi optical resolution and 9600 × 9600 interpolated. The original scanner controls include 256-color and 24-bit color modes. Higher settings increase file size and processing demands; the larger interpolated figure should not be presented as additional optical detail.
Paper loading and manual two-sided output
The multipurpose sheet feeder holds up to 200 sheets of the specified 20 lb stock, or up to 10 suitable envelopes. Letter, Legal and A4 are explicitly supported. Set the guides to the actual paper, keep the stack below its mark and select the matching paper size. The output extension and stopper arrangement differs for Legal, so the closed body dimensions do not describe all the space needed while printing.
The manufacturer rates the printer at up to 10 pages per minute using Letter or A4 from that feeder. Its Windows driver also has a duplex option, but the original instructions call it Manual Duplex: even-numbered pages print first, the driver stops, and the user reinstalls the paper before odd pages print. Someone requiring unattended automatic two-sided output should choose a model with an actual automatic duplex mechanism.
Historical software support needs function-level checking
The documented interfaces are USB and bidirectional IEEE 1284 parallel. A generic modern support menu containing network or mobile categories does not establish an included network adapter. The original USB desktop arrangement has positive scanner support, but its operating-system distinctions matter. The manual excludes USB on Windows 95 and NT 4; these should not be added back because of a conflicting web-table footnote.
The original Mac section also separates printing from scanning. The early Mac OS 8.5/8.51 and OS X 10/10.1 entries are printing only, while listed Mac OS 8.6–9.2 supports printing and scanning. These are historical examples, not a guarantee for current systems. For flatbed scanning, the Windows Control Center instructions direct the user to the machine’s Scan to key rather than assuming that every ADF-oriented screen follows the same sequence.
Consumables and the case for a newer alternative
The original guide names TN-250 toner and DR-250 drum. Its toner declarations are approximately 2200 pages for replacement toner and 1000 for the regional starter, at 5% coverage on Letter or A4. Drum declarations vary markedly with job length: up to 8000 pages at one page per job or 20000 at 20 pages per job. Those conditions are essential context, not a fixed promise of remaining life.
The US edition specifies 120 V AC, and the support table labels the body 18.1 × 18.0 × 13.9 in. in width, depth and height. Published pound and kilogram weights disagree, so no normalized weight is asserted here. If automatic duplex, built-in networking or reliable compatibility with a new computer is central to the decision, choose a printer whose exact current operating documents establish those needs.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact original S-1 rates up to 10 ppm with Letter or A4 from the multipurpose sheet feeder. Driver duplex is manual and has no automatic duplex rate.
Paper handling
Original 2-7 loads up to 200 sheets or 10 envelopes into the multipurpose sheet feeder. Letter/Legal/A4 sizes and 20 lb capacity are documented; copy paper-size setting should match actual stock.
Scanning arrangement
The 30-page ADF accepts 5.8–8.5 in. width and 5.8–14 in. length. The glass accepts Letter/A4 originals up to 8.5 × 11.7 in. Original color scanner controls include 256-color and 24-bit choices. Optical 600 × 2400 dpi is separate from interpolated 9600 × 9600 dpi.
Computer and mobile connections
Actual USB and bidirectional IEEE 1284 parallel interfaces are documented. Listed historical desktop software supplies scanning. Generic modern help categories do not establish included Ethernet, Wi-Fi or a mobile printing route.
Supplies and declared yields
Original TN-250 toner declarations are 2200 replacement pages and 1000 starter pages at 5% Letter/A4 coverage. The DR-250 drum declaration varies from 8000 pages at one page per job to 20000 pages at 20 pages per job; it is not a fixed life guarantee.
Electrical edition and setup
The US/Canada edition uses 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. US support explicitly labels body width, depth and height as 18.1 × 18.0 × 13.9 in. Published 26.4 lb and 11 kg weights are inconsistent, so normalized weight remains unknown. Allow extended tray and scanner access.
