DCP-8045D (U.S./Canada 120 V)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An existing USB desktop workflow needing Legal glass capture and separate multipurpose paper handling.

The main tradeoff

Two-sided originals need manual refeeding; Ethernet is optional and current software compatibility needs checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I scan a Legal original on the glass and print Legal automatically on both sides over USB?

Yes, using compatible desktop software. The glass reaches 14 inches, and Letter/Legal/A4 output duplex requires the matching rear lever position.

Will it scan both sides of a stack automatically?

No. Its double-sided-original instructions require turning and reloading the originals; the automatic duplex unit handles printed output.

Does the included configuration provide Ethernet computer scanning?

No. Ethernet needs the optional NC-9100h board and a compatible network-scanning setup.

Legal-size capture and automatic output duplex in an older copier platform

The Brother DCP-8045D is an earlier monochrome printer and copier with color computer scanning. It is useful to assess when an existing office needs a larger document glass, a feeder for loose pages and automatic two-sided printed output. Its central limitation is the handling of double-sided originals: the operating instructions require the user to turn and reload them. Automatic printing on both faces does not give this model automatic two-sided capture.

This assessment retains the original U.S./Canada 120 V edition. Brother’s exact US support result marks the model discontinued. Treat it as a documented earlier machine, with software availability and physical condition to verify separately. Its 32 MB memory and five-line display describe its original operating platform rather than a current support commitment.

The glass and feeder offer different ways to load a document

Both the glass and the feeder accept documents through Legal length. That is particularly useful when a long original should be captured without reducing it or dividing it into sections. Use the glass for a bound page or a document unsuitable for the feeder, following the manual’s placement instructions. The feeder holds up to fifty sheets under Brother’s stated Letter-paper and environmental conditions; that number is not a promise for every size, thickness or condition of original.

The color-scanner specification is independent of the monochrome print engine. A color original can become a color file on a compatible computer, while copies and printed pages remain monochrome. The guide distinguishes the optical scanner resolution from much larger interpolated figures. Increasing a software resolution setting should not be confused with adding physical detail to an original.

The included multipurpose tray is a real difference from DCP-8040

The DCP-8045D combines a 250-sheet cassette with a fifty-sheet multipurpose tray. The closely related DCP-8040 has a single-sheet manual feed instead, so its capacity should not be assigned to this model. Both included 8045D feeds support Letter, Legal and A4 on the documented plain-paper basis. An additional 250-sheet lower tray is optional and does not belong in standard capacity.

For automatic two-sided printing, set the rear paper-adjustment lever to match Letter/Legal or A4 and select the appropriate driver settings. The physical lever is part of the routine, not merely a software preference. Suitable envelopes use their own multipurpose-feed settings. Check media type as well as size before alternating between ordinary documents and occasional special stock.

The printer specification gives up to 21 Letter pages per minute and 20 A4 pages per minute from the paper tray. Automatic duplex is separately stated as nine printed sides, or 4.5 sheets, per minute. Those figures serve different planning purposes. Neither declaration establishes a recommended monthly workload for a particular office.

USB is included; Ethernet requires additional hardware

The standard computer interfaces are USB and parallel. A compatible USB desktop arrangement supports printing and scanning without assuming the optional network board is installed. The NC-9100h Ethernet board can add documented network functions, but an ordinary DCP-8045D should not enter an Ethernet shortlist on that basis alone. The network-scanning instructions also have operating-system restrictions, making the actual board and computer software relevant together.

The panel’s Secure key releases data held in memory after a four-digit password is entered. Use the appropriate native desktop controls and check the actual driver rather than treating every generic print queue as equivalent. There is no fax hardware in this three-function model.

Check supplies and working space before committing

Replacement TN-540 toner is declared for up to 3,500 pages and TN-570 for up to 6,700, based on five percent Letter/A4 coverage. The DR-510 drum is separate and has a stated life of up to 20,000 pages with usage conditions. The read source does not establish the supplied toner yield or remaining life of an individual machine.

The source dimensions contain conflicting inch presentations, and the listed 39.9-pound weight excludes drum and toner. Measure the actual unit and allow space for its document lid, rear duplex controls and paper access. A newer multifunction printer with documented automatic feeder duplex is the appropriate comparison when routinely capturing both faces would otherwise mean repeated manual handling.
