Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a native Ethernet desktop print and copy in color while color-scanning Legal through the feeder, with 300 sheets and four-digit release?
Qualifies in the compatible native desktop arrangement. Legal capture uses the simplex ADF, and standard paper input is 250 plus 50 sheets. Print speed is up to 21 Letter ppm; color copying has a separate 17-page rating.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the common DCP-9042CDN guide establish automatic print duplex on DCP-9040CN?
Fails: the actual model qualifier assigns that mechanism to DCP-9042CDN only. DCP-9040CN uses the documented manual refeeding routine.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a full Legal original be scanned on the glass?
Fails: the glass is 11.7 inches long. Suitable Legal originals use the simplex feeder rather than the flatbed.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired color device with three functions
The Brother DCP-9040CN combines color laser printing and copying with color computer scanning. It includes USB and Ethernet, a 35-sheet document feeder and 300 sheets of standard paper input. That can suit a compatible wired office desktop handling color documents and occasional suitable Legal originals. It does not include analog fax or the automatic duplex mechanisms found on selected neighboring models.
The original user guide covers DCP-9040CN alongside DCP-9042CDN, while the software guide covers several MFC and DCP models. Their qualifications are essential. A nearby automatic duplex feature or a generic fax paragraph cannot change this exact three-function configuration. This assessment treats it as an earlier equipment reference without inventing a discontinued notice or present availability.
Print duplex is a manual handling task
The exact US media and print tables assign automatic print duplex to DCP-9042CDN only. DCP-9040CN uses the documented manual routine: print the even-numbered pages, remove and straighten the output, then reinsert it when the Windows driver requests the other sides. That can save paper with user attention, but it does not meet an unattended automatic duplex requirement.
The main cassette holds 250 sheets and the MP tray fifty on the stated 20 lb /80 g/m² plain-paper basis. Documented ordinary input includes Letter, Legal and A4. Suitable envelopes use the MP path with a separate capacity of up to three. Neither the fifty-sheet plain-paper figure nor a general media list guarantees the same capacity for every stock.
Legal feeder capture and shorter glass
The simplex ADF accepts suitable originals through 8.5 ×14 inches. The glass is shorter at 8.5 ×11.7 inches, covering appropriate Letter and A4 originals rather than a full Legal page. Use the feeder for suitable Legal loose sheets and the glass for appropriate shorter originals that should remain stationary, following the loading and cover precautions.
The actual scan-to-file instructions explicitly skip the automatic duplex selection for DCP-9040CN. That input setting belongs to the MFC-9840CDW and DCP-9045CDN branches. The instructions also explain that scan color comes from the ControlCenter 3 configuration; pressing Black Start or Color Start does not independently change it. This makes compatible software settings part of the real color-capture routine.
Network scanning and native print release
The original computer and network tables establish compatible desktop printing and scanning through USB or 10/100 Ethernet. Server 2003 rows provide network printing only. A historical compatibility list should therefore be checked against the intended computer, especially when scanning rather than simply printing is essential. No included Wi-Fi or mobile protocol is inferred from Ethernet support.
The common control-panel instructions explicitly name DCP-9040CN and describe four-digit stored-job release. The software operation creates the protected document in the driver, selects the user and job at the machine and releases it with the password. Stored data clears after printing and at power-off. This is a specific print routine, separate from network security or fax functions belonging to other models.
Different print and copy rates, separate consumables
The exact US original rates one-sided printing up to 21 Letter ppm in both color and monochrome. Copying is separately up to seventeen Letter pages per minute. Neither is a personal timing result, and the faster print declaration is not borrowed as the copy rate. An exact recommended recurring monthly volume remains unknown in the sources read here.
TN-110 standard toner is declared around 2,500 black and 1,500 each cyan, magenta and yellow pages; TN-115 is around 5,000 black and 4,000 each color at 5% Letter coverage. Those older figures are not relabeled ISO/IEC yields. Drum, belt and waste toner box are separate maintenance items. The US unit specifies 110–120 VAC,50/60 Hz and measures 17.0 ×19.2 ×19.0 inches. Its 62.0 lb declaration excludes drum and toner, leaving loaded weight unknown. Leave feeder, cover, loading and service space when evaluating the actual machine.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact US original rates one-sided printing up to 21 Letter ppm in color or monochrome. Copying is separately up to 17 Letter pages per minute, not 21. These are manufacturer ratings rather than personal timing results. Recurring monthly recommendation is unestablished.
Paper handling
250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray give 300 standard sheets on stated 20 lb /80 g/m² plain paper for Letter, Legal and A4. MP envelopes separately up to 3. Actual source assigns automatic print duplex only to DCP-9042CDN; DCP-9040CN uses manual removal and refeeding.
Scanning arrangement
35-sheet simplex ADF accepts originals through 8.5 × 14 in.; glass is 8.5 × 11.7 in., not Legal. Actual scan-to-file operation skips the duplex selection on DCP-9040CN; automatic two-sided scanner branches are MFC-9840CDW/DCP-9045CDN. Color computer capture and color copying are supported; analog fax is not included.
Computer and mobile connections
Included Hi-Speed USB and 10/100 Ethernet with compatible native desktop printing/scanning. No included Wi-Fi is established. Native four-digit Secure key print release is confirmed separately from ordinary network security. Shared software fax functions belong to appropriate MFC models, not this three-function DCP.
Supplies and declared yields
TN-110BK approximately 2,500 pages and TN-110 CMY approximately 1,500 each; TN-115BK approximately 5,000 and TN-115 CMY approximately 4,000 at 5% Letter coverage, not ISO/IEC yields. Separate DR-110CL drum approximately 17,000 pages, BU-100CL belt approximately 50,000 and WT-100CL waste box approximately 20,000 under their distinct usage conditions. Exact inbox yield remains unknown.
Electrical edition and setup
USA/Canada original specifies 110–120 VAC,50/60 Hz. Body 17.0 × 19.2 × 19.0 in.; 62.0 lb explicitly excludes drum/toner, so loaded weight is unknown. Earlier original-platform reference without invented discontinued status. Leave feeder, glass-cover, tray and service access and confirm compatible software.
