A useful fit for

A small office scanning one-sided Letter or Legal batches and printing ordinary documents in black-and-white.

The main tradeoff

The feeder does not scan both sides automatically, and Legal originals fit the ADF rather than the shorter flatbed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I scan one-sided Legal originals in color over Ethernet and make monochrome copies?

Qualifies for computer color scanning and standalone monochrome copying through the documented Legal-size simplex ADF. The printer does not make color paper copies.

Can this feeder automatically scan both sides of a Letter document?

Fails: DCP-L2550DW explicitly has no duplex scanning. Automatic print duplex is a different mechanism.

Can I require a Legal-size flatbed for an original that cannot pass through the feeder?

Fails: the glass is up to 8.5 x 11.8 in. Legal is supported through the ADF, not the flatbed.

A document feeder for one-sided originals

The Brother DCP-L2550DW fits a small office that prints in black-and-white and regularly scans or copies one-sided documents. Its 50-sheet automatic document feeder is the useful addition to the flatbed: a suitable stack can be scanned without placing every page on the glass. USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi give it several documented computer arrangements.

The deciding limitation is that the feeder does not automatically scan both sides. Automatic duplex printing is supported, but that is a separate output mechanism. A person handling two-sided originals needs a documented duplex scanner or a deliberate manual routine; the printer’s two-sided print setting does not solve the input task.

Legal originals fit a specific route

The actual USA guide gives the ADF a document range up to 8.5 × 14 in., supporting Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary originals. Its 50-sheet capacity uses the stated 20 lb paper basis. Follow the original type and weight restrictions rather than feeding a delicate, bound or unsuitable original simply because its dimensions fit.

The scanner glass is shorter: the operating guide lists up to 8.5 × 11.8 in., enough for Letter and A4, but not a complete Legal original. The older brochure describes the glass by its Letter size. Neither description makes it a Legal flatbed. If a Legal original cannot safely use the feeder, choose a model with positively documented Legal-size glass.

Color scanning and monochrome printing are distinct capabilities. This model can capture a color original to the computer, while its toner engine prints and copies in black-and-white. The two-line monochrome control display is another separate feature; a color screen is not required for color capture.

Use the software supported by the connection

The USA computer-requirements table supports printing and scanning over USB, Ethernet and wireless for the specified desktop operating systems. The Server rows have narrower network-printing support. Check the exact current driver and scan application for the computer being used, rather than assuming every historical OS category includes the same scanner features.

AirPrint and Mopria are positively listed, with the product’s footnote requiring the documented wireless-network arrangement. They do not travel through a local USB cable by themselves, and mobile printing support does not guarantee every scanning option in every phone app. Wi-Fi Direct is separately documented; this review does not borrow a desktop network-scanning route for an unverified peer-mode scan setup.

There is no analog fax hardware in this DCP configuration. The shared guide explicitly reserves fax functions for MFC models. A fax section elsewhere in that manual cannot add a telephone-line workflow to DCP-L2550DW.

Paper output has its own limits

The cassette holds up to 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper and includes Letter, Legal and A4 in its ordinary size list. The manual opening takes one sheet at a time for suitable envelopes and other media. It is an occasional special-stock path, not another full loaded tray.

The USA automatic-duplex media list includes Letter and Legal, alongside Folio and named regional Legal sizes. It does not list A4 for this edition. The manual’s separate A4 duplex-speed entry does not replace that regional media restriction. Supported envelopes also follow their own handling instructions rather than an assumed two-sided routine.

Match the workload before counting supplies

The exact operating table declares up to 36 one-sided Letter pages per minute or 34 on A4. Letter automatic duplex is separately 17 sides per minute, or 8.5 sheets per minute. These are manufacturer figures, not our own timed performance results.

Brother recommends up to 2000 pages per month and separately lists a 15000-page duty cycle. Use the recommendation for sustained work. The original package contains starter toner around 700 pages and a separate DR730 drum; replacement toner and optional subscription offers have their own conditions. A trial promotion does not establish mandatory ongoing enrollment.

The 25.6 lb body measures 16.1 × 15.7 × 12.5 in. and uses the documented USA 110–120 V supply. Allow room above for the glass lid and feeder, plus paper and service access. Choose it for the actual simplex scanning routine and monochrome output; choose a duplex-scanning model when automatic capture of both sides is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Actual USA manual gives up to 36 one-sided Letter ppm, 34 A4 ppm. Letter duplex is separately 17 sides/minute, 8.5 sheets/minute; A4 speed entries do not override US duplex-media sizes.

Paper handling

Cassette holds 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper and supports Letter/Legal/A4. Manual feed is one sheet. USA automatic duplex lists Letter/Legal/Folio and named regional Legal sizes, not A4.

Scanning arrangement

50-sheet ADF at stated 20 lb basis accepts up to 8.5 x 14 in. one-sided originals. Glass is up to 8.5 x 11.8 in., supporting Letter/A4 but not Legal. Product explicitly says duplex scanning No.

Computer and mobile connections

USB and supported desktop network scanning are documented; Ethernet/Wi-Fi support normal printing/scanning. AirPrint/Mopria require the documented wireless-network arrangement. Wi-Fi Direct is a distinct print route here.

Supplies and declared yields

Original package: approximately 700-page starter toner and DR730 drum around 12000 pages. TN730 and TN760 are separately listed replacement choices. Subscription promotion does not establish compulsory enrollment.
