DCP-L5600DNIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired office needing automatic two-sided output, Legal originals on either scanner route and native protected print release.

The main tradeoff

Its large feeder scans one side at a time. Fax and built-in Wi-Fi are absent, while extra paper trays require a separate purchase.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Ethernet support Legal duplex output, Legal glass and feeder color scans, PIN release and 300 included sheets?

Qualifies with compatible native Windows software and suitable paper. Both scanner routes accept Legal; the feeder is simplex. The 3,500-page monthly recommendation and 42 one-sided Letter ppm are separately documented.

Will that seventy-page feeder automatically capture both sides of originals?

Fails: DCP-L5600DN has simplex input. Automatic two-sided output from one-sided originals does not supply the missing automatic input route.

Can I combine AirPrint with native protected print release in one supported plan?

Fails: the documented AirPrint arrangement and native Windows four-digit release are separate. Mobile printing does not establish native-driver PIN support.

A wired office machine with a full Legal glass

The Brother DCP-L5600DN is a discontinued monochrome laser machine for printing, copying and color computer scanning. Its strongest fit is a compatible wired office handling Legal originals and ordinary black documents. The included configuration combines a seventy-page feeder, a full Legal glass and automatic two-sided print output. It omits telephone fax and an internal wireless radio.

The exact DCP model matters. Its shared guide includes MFC fax machines and higher models with automatic two-sided original capture. Those capabilities do not become standard here. A surviving generic cloud-app list mentioning fax forwarding also does not give this DCP a telephone fax function.

Both scanner routes accept Legal

The feeder accepts suitable originals up to fourteen inches long, with its seventy-page capacity stated on a 20 lb paper basis. The separate glass also reaches fourteen inches, making Legal glass capture possible without substituting the feeder for a bound or unsuitable original. This is a useful distinction from machines that combine a Legal feeder with shorter Letter/A4 glass.

Input capture remains simplex. The product record says no duplex scanning, and the operating guide restricts automatic two-sided scanning to an explicit list that excludes DCP-L5600DN. Creating two-sided copies from one-sided originals concerns output paper. It does not make the feeder reverse or scan both original sides in one pass.

Native scanning and protected printing

Hi-Speed USB and included 10/100 Ethernet support ordinary desktop printing and scanning through compatible native software. The actual ControlCenter workflow sends an image or PDF to the selected computer; network use selects the destination computer explicitly. Original Server compatibility rows are network-print-only, rather than a promise of desktop capture on every operating system.

Native Windows Secure Print holds a supported job until the user selects it at the touchscreen and enters its four-digit password. Printed protected data clears from memory, as does stored data at power-off. That driver routine is separate from AirPrint or Mopria. Those mobile protocols use a suitable shared network, with the printer connected by Ethernet and the mobile device reaching the network through its access point; they do not add built-in Wi-Fi.

Included trays and real workload limits

The included cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray another fifty on the stated plain-paper basis. Both support Letter, Legal and A4, giving 300 included ordinary sheets. The advertised 1,340-sheet expanded configuration requires optional trays. Suitable envelopes use the separate multipurpose routine and media settings.

The exact US automatic print-duplex list includes Letter, Legal, Folio, Mexico Legal and India Legal. Ordinary A4 feeding does not enlarge that list. One-sided output is rated up to forty-two Letter pages per minute. The original separately describes Letter duplex output up to twenty sides or ten sheets per minute; neither is a personal timing result.

Brother recommends up to 3,500 printed pages monthly, separately from the 50,000 maximum duty figure. The brochure's scan-rate footnote uses Letter at 200 dpi with advanced features off, while the surviving web footnote says 300 dpi. Those source conditions are kept distinct, and scan images per minute never become print pages per minute.

Supplies, space and the deciding alternative

The included toner declaration is approximately 3,000 pages. TN-820 replacement toner is approximately 3,000 and TN-850 approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate DR-820 drum declaration distinguishes one-page jobs from three-page jobs. These figures do not establish current operating cost or remaining life in an earlier unit.

The loaded body measures 19.5 × 16.8 × 19.1 inches and weighs 37.6 lb. The US original specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Leave lid, feeder, tray, rear-path and service access. If automatic capture of two-sided originals, telephone fax or built-in Wi-Fi is essential, choose an exact model documenting that function rather than relying on the family guide's neighboring columns.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 42 one-sided Letter ppm; original separately states duplex up to 20 sides / 10 sheets per minute at Letter or A4, while the exact US duplex paper list remains controlling for that regional routine. Brochure scan rates up to 28 black / 20 color ipm use Letter at 200 dpi with advanced features off; the surviving web footnote instead says 300 dpi. Those scan conditions are retained separately, never treated as print speed. Recommended up to 3,500 pages/month differs from 50,000 maximum duty.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray, on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain-paper basis. Both paths support Letter, Legal and A4. Optional LT-5500/LT-6500 trays are excluded from the 300-sheet base total. Exact US automatic print-duplex list is Letter, Legal, Folio, Mexico Legal and India Legal; ordinary A4 input does not extend that list. Suitable envelopes use the separately instructed MP routine.

Scanning arrangement

70-page simplex ADF on the stated 20 lb basis, accepting originals up to 8.5 × 14 in.; separate Legal glass also accepts up to 14 in. long. Color and monochrome computer capture are positive. Automatic two-sided ADF capture belongs to other explicitly listed models, excluding DCP-L5600DN. Optical glass and ADF resolutions differ from interpolated resolution.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB and 10/100 Ethernet, 256 MB and 3.7-inch color touchscreen. No built-in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct. AirPrint and Mopria printing use a suitable shared network with the printer on Ethernet and the mobile device reaching that network; they do not add a radio. Native Windows four-digit Secure Print is a separate driver arrangement.

Supplies and declared yields

Approximately 3,000-page included toner; TN-820 replacement approximately 3,000 and TN-850 approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. Separate DR-820 drum approximately 30,000 pages at one page per job or 50,000 at three pages per job, with stated Letter/A4 simplex usage conditions. No current cost-per-page claim.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact body 19.5 × 16.8 × 19.1 in. and 37.6 lb with toner/drum. US original specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Allow room for the Legal lid, feeder, trays, rear path, cables and maintenance. Verify compatible native software and network configuration for the actual earlier unit.
