HL-1240Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An existing compatible legacy system needing ordinary black printing without a scanner or automatic duplexer.

The main tradeoff

Ethernet requires an optional print server, memory is not expandable, and two-sided jobs require the operator to refeed pages.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB system print monochrome Legal pages with 250 included sheets and a 12 Letter ppm declaration?

Qualifies with suitable stock and compatible legacy software. This is ordinary one-sided output; the original explicitly includes Letter in its declared rate.

Fails: the documented driver prints one side, then the operator removes and reloads the sheets for the other side.

Fails: the NC-2010p network print server is optional external hardware. It is not an included Ethernet interface.

For an existing legacy printing routine

The Brother HL-1240 is a discontinued monochrome laser printer with included USB and parallel connections. It makes black documents and has no scanner, copier or fax hardware. Its useful role is an existing compatible legacy system needing ordinary single-sided output and a 250-sheet cassette. Automatic duplex and included network sharing are separate requirements it does not meet.

The exact model has two megabytes of non-expandable memory and PCL4 support. Its shared original also covers HL-1030 and HL-1250. The latter's richer emulations, memory expansion, serial option and optional lower tray do not become HL-1240 features. That distinction matters when deciding whether an old application or an advertised accessory actually fits this printer.

USB is included; networking is optional

The original positively documents USB printing through the supplied compatible software, alongside the standard parallel interface. Its operating-system examples belong to an earlier software generation. They establish the documented route, rather than guaranteeing that a current computer will have a usable native driver or the same feature controls.

Network sharing uses an optional external NC-2010p print server through the parallel interface. That is a different configuration from included Ethernet hardware and is excluded from the ordinary base match. AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct and native PIN release are unestablished in the read exact sources. A general utility name cannot supply those missing protocol or protected-job details.

Legal paper and hands-on duplexing

The cassette holds approximately 250 sheets on the original 80 g/m² basis. The USA/Canada configuration accepts Legal along with Letter and A4. A single-sheet manual path handles suitable envelopes and other instructed stock. Media size, weight, orientation and output-path instructions still apply; accepting an envelope is not a promise of automatic two-sided envelope printing.

The original calls its two-sided routine manual duplexing. The driver first prints even pages, after which the operator removes and reloads the stack in the instructed orientation before printing odd pages. This is useful only when that handling is acceptable. A request for automatic duplex therefore fails, regardless of the fact that the finished document can have printing on both sides.

What the speed and supply figures mean

The exact guide states up to twelve pages per minute with A4 or Letter paper from the cassette. It explains that the maximum comes from multiple copies of the same page and varies with interface, emulation, computer processing, allocated memory and graphics. That is a manufacturer declaration, rather than a measured mixed-document result. No exact recommended monthly volume is established in the read sources.

The US specification identifies TN-430 at approximately 3,000 A4 pages and TN-460 at approximately 6,000 A4 pages with five-percent coverage. The separate DR-400 drum is up to 20,000 A4 pages at one page per job. These older coverage-based declarations are not relabeled as modern ISO yields. They also do not establish the supplied cartridge yield, current running cost or remaining life.

Check the actual cassette and electrical edition

The original distinguishes a shallower A4 cassette from the USA/Canada Legal cassette. The latter measures 14.2 × 16.9 × 9.3 inches. Leave loading, rear-path, cable and service space beyond that outline. Loaded weight remains unassigned because the surviving US table and original give different values, both described as including toner and drum.

The original USA/Canada electrical branch specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Confirm the actual rating plate, cassette and driver before relying on an earlier unit. If unattended two-sided output or standard Ethernet is essential, choose a model explicitly including that hardware rather than treating an optional server or a manual routine as equivalent.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 12 one-sided A4 or Letter pages/minute from the cassette in the exact original. Maximum declared rate uses multiple copies of the same page and depends on interface, emulation, computer, allocated memory, paper and graphics. No exact monthly recommended range or maximum duty established.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette on the original 80 g/m² basis and a one-sheet manual slot. US/Canada cassette supports Legal as well as Letter/A4. Suitable envelopes use the separate manual-feed routine. Output duplex is manual even-pages/refeed/odd-pages, not automatic.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB and IEEE 1284 parallel; optional NC-2010p external 10BaseT print server is excluded from the included configuration. Exact HL-1240 has non-expandable 2 MB and PCL4, distinct from HL-1250 memory, emulations and optional lower tray. AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct and protected PIN release are unestablished.

Supplies and declared yields

TN-430 approximately 3,000 A4 pages and TN-460 approximately 6,000 A4 pages at 5% coverage in the exact US specification; original also describes A4/Letter replacement yields. Separate DR-400 up to 20,000 A4 pages at one page per job. These are coverage-based declarations, not a substituted ISO test claim. Inbox toner yield remains unestablished.

Electrical edition and setup

US Legal-cassette configuration 14.2 × 16.9 × 9.3 in.; original separately lists shallower 14.6-inch A4-cassette depth. Loaded weight is left unknown because exact US table states 20.3 lb while the original states 20.9 lb, both including toner/drum. USA/Canada electrical branch is 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Verify the actual rating plate and usable driver; leave tray, rear-path and service clearance.
