HL-1650Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible local desk needing protected black duplex documents and a separate multipurpose feed, with no capture or telephone-fax requirement.

The main tradeoff

Legal MP capacity is 30 sheets, so included Legal capacity is 280 rather than the ordinary 350 total. Protected storage needs nonzero RAM-disk configuration.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can native USB combine Legal duplex, PIN release and 280 included Legal sheets?

Qualifies with compatible native Windows software, suitable stock and nonzero RAM-disk configuration for the protected job. The Legal MP portion is limited to 30 sheets.

Can the standard configuration hold 350 Legal sheets?

Fails: the original MP allowance for Legal is 30, so its included cassette plus MP total is 280 for that size.

Fails for the included configuration: the NC-4100h board is optional. Standard networking of HL-1670N is not transferred.

Built-in duplex for a compatible local desk

The Brother HL-1650 is a discontinued dedicated monochrome laser printer whose useful fit is local black-document output with built-in duplex and native password release. Standard connections are USB and parallel. Historical USB support also depends on its documented operating-system and interface combination. A compatible historical driver is a practical requirement, and the machine has no scanner, copier, document feeder or telephone fax.

Its shared guide also covers HL-1670N, but their included hardware differs. HL-1650 has eight megabytes of memory and an optional NC-4100h Ethernet board. HL-1670N’s standard networking and larger base memory are not included here. The optional lower tray likewise should be counted only when actually installed.

Legal capacity has its own restriction

The ordinary included cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray holds up to one hundred on the original 80 g/m² basis. That gives 350 for suitable Letter or A4 stock. The same original table explicitly limits Legal and 8.5 × 13-inch paper in the multipurpose tray to thirty sheets. Consequently, included Legal input is 280 sheets, rather than the unrestricted combined headline.

The optional lower cassette adds another 250 sheets under its own conditions. It is excluded from the standard total. Envelopes, labels and heavier stock use the instructed multipurpose and face-up routines; different media do not share every plain-paper capacity or duplex permission. A lower tray pictured in an old illustration is not evidence that it accompanies an individual unit.

Automatic duplex and historical speed declarations

The original driver sheet positively states that the internal duplex unit is standard and supports A4, Letter and Legal. The operating media table limits duplex to suitable plain or recycled paper. Loading the stock, selecting the correct paper settings and following the original duplex-adjustment instructions remain necessary parts of the routine.

The normal-speed declaration is up to sixteen pages per minute without an exact paper-size qualifier. It is therefore not presented as an established Letter-specific number. There is also a difference between the surviving web duplex figure and the original guide’s declaration. Their unresolved page/sheet basis is retained privately rather than turned into a confident comparable rate. No personal throughput measurement or recurring monthly recommendation is invented.

Configure memory for genuinely protected jobs

The Windows driver’s Secure Print routine sends password-protected data for later control-panel release. The operator selects Reprint, Secure, the user and job, then enters the password. That protected routine is distinct from ordinary Last Job reprinting, which is intended to let an existing job print again.

The original instructions set RAMDISK SIZE above its default of zero to allocate storage for reprinting. Allocation reduces the memory available for other work, and stored RAM data clears when power is turned off. Additional RAM is recommended for larger secure jobs; the cited instructions do not make a purchased memory upgrade an unconditional prerequisite for every protected job. Available working memory and document complexity still matter.

Supplies and the correct electrical edition

Original replacement toner is declared at approximately 6,500 A4/Letter single-sided pages at about five percent coverage and print-density setting zero. This is not relabeled as an ISO yield. The drum declaration is approximately 20,000 pages at one page per job. Neither figure establishes included toner, remaining life or current running cost.

The exact HL-1650 body is 16.0 × 16.7 × 10.8 inches and approximately 32.0 lb with drum and toner. The guide distinguishes the US 100–120 V edition from 220–240 V versions. Check the actual label and leave rear-output, multipurpose, cassette and maintenance access. A desk requiring included Ethernet or captured originals needs a differently equipped alternative.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original specification declares up to 16 ppm normal without a paper-size qualifier, so no one-sided Letter numeric speed is asserted. Duplex declarations conflict: original guide up to 7.5 ppm versus exact web up to 3.75 ppm, with units unresolved. Neither is relabeled or used as a comparable measured rate. Monthly recommendation and duty remain unknown.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette and 100-sheet MP on 80 g/m² / original 21 lb basis. Exact MP restriction Legal and 8.5 × 13 in. 30 sheets; included Legal total 280, Letter/A4 350. Optional lower 250 excluded. Built-in automatic duplex A4, Letter and Legal on appropriate plain/recycled stock. Envelopes use face-up MP routine.

Scanning arrangement

Dedicated single-black-toner printer without scanner, document feeder, copy or fax hardware. A network-management utility does not add capture hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact HL-1650 8 MB expandable to 136 MB; standard USB and IEEE1284 parallel. NC-4100h 10/100 Ethernet and IR-1000 are optional; standard network and 16 MB of HL-1670N are excluded. Native PCL6 and BR-Script 3 with historical operating-system/interface distinctions.

Supplies and declared yields

Original replacement toner declaration approximately 6,500 A4/Letter single-sided pages at about 5% coverage, print density 0; not relabeled ISO. Drum approximately 20,000 pages at one page per job. Included-toner yield and exact local order codes are not established by the cited sections.

Software and support

Windows native Secure Print and control-panel Reprint > Secure select user/job/password. Set RAMDISK SIZE above its 0 MB default to allocate stored-job memory; this reduces working memory and clears at power-off. Additional RAM is recommended for larger secure jobs, not asserted mandatory. Do not confuse non-secure Last Job reprint with password protection.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact loaded HL-1650 body 16.0 × 16.7 × 10.8 in., approximately 32.0 lb including drum and toner, excluding optional lower tray. US notice positively concerns the 100–120 V model; shared guide also covers 220–240 V editions, so verify the actual electrical label. Leave MP, rear-output, cassette, cable and maintenance space.
