HL-1670NIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

An established native desktop network-printing workflow that benefits from a separate multipurpose tray.

The main tradeoff

Legal input totals 280 sheets; legacy drivers, conflicting duplex speed declarations and the actual electrical edition need checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it print Legal automatically on both sides over included Ethernet with 280 sheets of Legal input?

Yes, with a compatible native desktop driver. The original establishes standard Ethernet, Legal duplex and the Legal-specific 250-plus-30-sheet capacity.

Can I load 350 sheets of Legal in the included feeds?

No. Legal is limited to thirty sheets in the multipurpose tray, so the documented combined Legal capacity is 280.

Can I scan documents using its network interface?

No. This is a dedicated printer without scanner hardware.

Included Ethernet distinguishes this model from HL-1650

The Brother HL-1670N is an earlier dedicated monochrome laser printer for an existing office that needs network sharing and automatic two-sided output. Its particular distinction from HL-1650 is an included NC-4100h Ethernet board and sixteen megabytes of standard memory. The deciding tradeoff is its legacy platform: usable computer drivers, the actual installed network board and the machine’s condition need checking before it becomes part of a dependable daily routine.

The exact US support record marks the model discontinued. A surviving manual establishes intended operation, rather than current stock or universal modern compatibility. An individual unit may also have been modified over its life, so verify the rear connection and configuration report when assessing an existing printer.

Paper size changes the included input capacity

The main cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray holds up to one hundred on the stated plain-paper basis. That gives a useful ordinary total of 350 sheets for Letter or A4. The original gives a smaller thirty-sheet multipurpose limit for Legal and 8.5-by-13-inch stock. A Legal job therefore has 280 documented included sheets, rather than borrowing the shorter-paper total.

This distinction can affect whether a printer fits an unattended batch even when both trays physically accept the selected size. The optional 250-sheet lower tray is additional equipment and is excluded from standard capacity. Suitable envelopes use the multipurpose feed with their specified media settings rather than the cassette’s plain-paper routine.

Automatic output duplex requires both paper and driver setup

The operating guide supports automatic two-sided printing on Letter, Legal and A4 plain paper within its stated weight range. Set the rear paper-adjustment lever when using Letter or A4 and choose the appropriate duplex setting in the compatible driver. Correct paper loading and orientation remain part of the routine; a software checkbox cannot compensate for curled or unsuitable stock.

The maker’s normal speed declaration is up to sixteen pages per minute without an established Letter qualifier in the read original. It is kept as an unqualified source claim rather than inserted into a Letter-specific speed filter. Duplex numbers also conflict: the exact web table gives 3.75 ppm, while the original guide gives 7.5 ppm. The differing declarations are disclosed without guessing a conversion between pages, sides or sheets.

A real protected-job workflow needs memory allocation

The Secure printing routine holds a protected job until the user selects it and enters its password at the panel. The guide explains that RAM-disk allocation defaults to zero and must be increased for the described RAM-spooling workflow. Reserving that space reduces the memory available to process print jobs. Brother recommends additional RAM for larger secure queues, which is different from requiring an expansion board for every small protected document.

RAM contents disappear when power is removed. Ordinary last-job reprinting is also distinct from protected printing: a shared nonsecure job is intended to be available for others to reprint. Choose the right job-spooling setting and check the actual driver instead of treating the Reprint button itself as a confidentiality guarantee.

Connections, supplies and the sensible comparison

USB, parallel and the included Fast Ethernet board support its legacy computer role. The operating guide explicitly makes Ethernet optional for HL-1650 and standard for HL-1670N, resolving the prior lead that asked for confirmation. PCL6 and BR-Script emulation are documented. There is no scanner, copier or fax, and no specific mobile-printing protocol is established by these sources.

Brother declares toner for approximately 6,500 Letter/A4 pages at five percent coverage and the separate drum for approximately 20,000 pages at one page per job. These declarations do not establish inbox yield or remaining life. The body measures sixteen inches wide, 16.7 deep and 10.8 high, with a 32.4-pound weight including toner and drum.

The shared guide describes separate electrical editions, so check the actual power label. Allow space for paper access and maintenance. Compare a newer supported monochrome network printer when current software or mobile printing is essential, and compare exact-size input capacity when Legal batches are the deciding workload.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Normal up to 16 ppm lacks an established Letter basis. Duplex conflicts: exact web 3.75 ppm versus original 7.5 ppm, retained without invented unit conversion. Letter-specific numerical speed remains unknown.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette plus 100-sheet MP tray for Letter/A4. Legal MP limit is 30 sheets, so exact-size included capacity is 280. Optional lower 250 excluded. Automatic output duplex supports Letter/Legal/A4 plain paper.

Computer and mobile connections

USB, IEEE 1284 parallel and NC-4100h 10/100 Ethernet are standard on HL-1670N. Ethernet is optional only for HL-1650. 16 MB memory, expandable to 144 MB.

Supplies and declared yields

Toner approximately 6,500 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage; separate drum approximately 20,000 pages at one page/job. Inbox toner yield and monthly recommendation unknown.

Software and support

Protected native jobs require nonzero RAM-disk allocation above the default 0 MB. Stored RAM data is lost at power-off; allocation reduces work memory. Extra memory is recommended for substantial secure queues.

Electrical edition and setup

Body W 16.0 × D 16.7 × H 10.8 in.; 32.4 lb includes toner and drum, excluding optional lower tray. Original lists separate AC 100–120 V and 220–240 V editions; exact installed electrical label must be checked.
