Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the included Ethernet arrangement provide automatic Legal duplex, native password collection and 280 Legal sheets?
Yes, with a compatible native driver and configured secure-job RAM disk. Ethernet is standard on this exact model, and Legal capacity respects the thirty-sheet MP limit.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its 350-sheet headline satisfy a 350-sheet Legal requirement?
No. The original limits Legal to thirty sheets in MP plus 250 in the cassette.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan a document feeder over Ethernet?
No. This is a print-only laser with no document-capture hardware.

The Brother HL-1870N is a discontinued monochrome laser reference for a compatible desktop network that needs automatic duplex and controlled job collection. Unlike the otherwise related HL-1850, it includes the NC-4100h Ethernet board as standard. The useful distinction is therefore an actual network connection, rather than simply a network installation chapter somewhere in the series manual.
Its controller has thirty-two megabytes of standard memory, described in the exact US specification as sixteen on board plus a sixteen-megabyte DIMM. USB and parallel are also standard. PCL6 and BR-Script 3 are documented language options, but the real operating system and driver still need confirmation before this older platform becomes part of a working office routine.
Three hundred fifty sheets normally, fewer for Legal
The ordinary included input arrangement consists of a 250-sheet cassette and a one-hundred-sheet multipurpose tray, at the original’s eighty-gram paper basis. Letter and A4 fit both. An optional 250-sheet lower cassette is additional equipment and stays outside this standard configuration.
The actual operating table restricts Legal and 8.5-by-13-inch sheets to thirty in the multipurpose tray. With 250 in the ordinary cassette, the included Legal capacity is 280. The shorter web headline does not erase that limitation. This distinction matters when a routine requires Legal paper and a minimum loaded supply at the same time.
The multipurpose tray also handles suitable envelopes, labels, transparencies and thicker media under separate settings. The original directs appropriate heavier stock to the face-up output route. Match the size, source and media setting, and allow room for the opened feed and output paths rather than comparing only closed dimensions.
Automatic duplex has its own paper rules
Letter, Legal and A4 plain paper from sixty to 105 grams per square meter are explicitly supported for ordinary automatic duplex. The driver procedure selects the actual duplex unit; the printer completes both sides without a prompted stack turn. The adjustment lever must match Letter or A4 where directed.
Booklet layout has narrower Letter/A4 instructions and its own PCL setting. Legal duplex capability should not become a promise that every booklet routine also handles Legal. Envelopes, labels or heavy stock likewise do not acquire duplex approval from the ordinary-page list.
The declared one-sided speed is nineteen Letter pages per minute or eighteen A4 pages per minute. The exact web footnote explains duplex as 8.5 sides, or 4.25 sheets, per minute. Those different units describe different work; none is a scan speed or a numerical recommended monthly volume.
Secure collection needs RAM setup
The original native job-spooling routine supports secure documents that wait for a password at the printer. The user selects Secure, the user name and job name, then enters the panel password and requests the copies. This is distinct from simply reprinting the last unprotected job.
The RAM disk starts at zero and must be allocated before relying on memory-backed secure jobs. Allocation consumes working printer memory, and power-off clears data held in RAM. Extra memory is recommended for larger amounts of secure work rather than treated as an installed standard accessory or a prerequisite for every small job.
A working native-driver network arrangement is the supported route for this assessment. No Wi-Fi radio, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint or Mopria workflow is established. There is no document feeder, glass, copier or fax mechanism; an Ethernet printer cannot substitute for an MFP when originals need capture.
Body, supplies and the exact electrical edition
The original gives a body 16.7 inches wide, 16.7 deep and 10.8 high. Its own HL-1870N column states approximately 32.4 pounds including drum and toner. The web’s kilogram and pound entries do not agree, so the independently consistent original pound value supplies the recorded loaded weight.
Toner is declared up to 6,500 Letter/A4 pages at five-percent coverage, with the separate drum up to twenty thousand pages at one page per job. A supplied-toner yield remains unknown. The guide covers 100–120 V and 220–240 V editions without mapping the examined unit; confirm its rating label. A newer documented mobile printer is a sensible alternative when current phone printing is central to the routine.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
19 one-sided Letter / 18 A4 ppm. Exact US web footnote specifies automatic duplex up to 8.5 sides or 4.25 sheets per minute.
Paper handling
250-sheet cassette plus 100-sheet MP tray at 80 g/m². Actual Legal MP limit thirty, giving 280 included Legal sheets. Optional lower cassette excluded. Automatic duplex Letter/Legal/A4 plain paper, 60–105 g/m²; booklet has separate Letter/A4 restrictions.
Computer and mobile connections
32 MB standard, specified as 16 MB on board plus 16 MB DIMM. Standard USB, parallel and NC-4100h 10/100 Ethernet; this board is optional on 1850. Native secure printing requires configuring zero-default RAM disk, with working-memory and power-off limits.
Supplies and declared yields
Toner up to 6,500 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage; separate drum up to 20,000 at one page per job. Inbox yield and numerical recommended monthly volume unknown.
Electrical edition and setup
Original own-model body 16.7 W × 16.7 D × 10.8 H inches, approximately 32.4 lb including drum and toner. Web kg/lb values disagree; original pound value retained. Guide covers two voltage editions without resolving the examined unit, so rating-label confirmation is required.
