HL-2040Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible local desktop needing straightforward monochrome output without automatic duplex or built-in networking.

The main tradeoff

The HL-2070N network interface and PCL branch do not belong to this GDI model; wireless and Ethernet accessories are optional.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB desktop print monochrome Legal documents with 250 included sheets?

Qualifies in the documented local USB arrangement with suitable paper. The cassette supports Legal and holds 250 sheets on the stated capacity basis; this does not require automatic duplex.

Can it automatically print both sides without my refeeding the stack?

Fails: the documented duplex process is manual. The user removes the first-side output and reloads it for the other side.

Does the exact standard HL-2040 include Ethernet like HL-2070N?

Fails: its Ethernet accessory is optional. The neighboring HL-2070N’s standard network interface does not apply to HL-2040.

A small local printer from an earlier platform

The Brother HL-2040 is a discontinued monochrome laser printer with a 250-sheet cassette and a single-sheet manual feed. Its standard computer interfaces are Full-Speed USB 2.0 and parallel. It can suit a compatible local desktop that needs ordinary black document output, but neither automatic duplex nor built-in networking is part of this exact configuration.

The original guide also covers HL-2030 and HL-2070N. Their columns matter: HL-2040 uses GDI emulation and 8 MB standard memory, while HL-2070N adds its own network and PCL capabilities. Reading a family manual as one undifferentiated specification would produce a more capable machine than the actual HL-2040. This assessment keeps those branches separate.

Both sides require the user to handle the paper

The guide's duplex procedure is explicitly manual. With the appropriate driver setting, the printer outputs the even-numbered pages first, then the user removes and reloads the stack before the odd-numbered pages print. It gives different orientations for the cassette and manual feed. That is a useful paper-saving routine for someone willing to manage it, but it does not satisfy unattended automatic two-sided printing.

Paper condition and orientation matter. The instructions warn about curling, jams and poor quality during manual refeeding, and specify suitable plain or recycled paper rather than every stock type. Letterhead adds another orientation decision. A two-sided document option in the driver therefore should not be mistaken for an automatic reversing paper path inside the printer.

Capacity is for the stated plain-paper basis

The cassette holds up to 250 sheets, and the original capacity footnote uses 80 g/m² / 21 lb paper. The manual feed takes one sheet at a time. The US configuration supports ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 input in the documented ranges. A single-sheet slot is useful for an occasional different medium; it is not another stack tray to add to the standard cassette capacity.

Suitable envelopes use the manual-feed instructions and are not duplexed. The maker's paper-type, weight and construction restrictions remain important for envelopes, labels and transparencies. A general media name does not guarantee every item sold under that name will feed correctly. The rated one-sided speed is up to 20 Letter or A4 pages per minute from the cassette, rather than completed manual-duplex sheets at that speed.

USB compatibility and optional network equipment

The device's USB interface is Full-Speed, even though the connector is described within the USB 2.0 standard. That distinction avoids inventing a Hi-Speed interface from the version number. The original Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 arrangements do not support USB. Historical Windows, Macintosh and Linux driver statements describe their documented period and should be checked against the intended computer.

The NC-2200w wireless device and NC-2100p Ethernet device are optional. They do not make Wi-Fi or Ethernet included in the base printer, and no AirPrint, Mopria or protected print-release feature is inferred from a sharing accessory. There is also no scanner, copier or fax. This is a local print-only assessment rather than a network multifunction arrangement.

Supplies, power and space

The original guide declares a starter around 1,500 pages with a model-and-country qualification and standard toner around 2,500 pages at 5% Letter/A4 coverage. These older figures are not relabeled as ISO/IEC yields. The separate drum declaration is approximately 12,000 pages at one page per job. Actual remaining life in a surviving unit and current replacement costs are not established by those declarations.

USA/Canada power is AC 110–120 V, 50/60 Hz, while Europe/Australia is separately 220–240 V. The body measures 14.6 × 14.2 × 6.5 inches and weighs 14.3 lb including toner and drum. The guide asks for ventilation clearance, including roughly four inches at the ventilation hole, plus practical loading and service access. Choose it when compatible local monochrome output and manual paper handling meet the job; require another documented configuration for automatic duplex or included networking.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 20 one-sided Letter or A4 ppm from the cassette. These are manufacturer rates, not completed duplex sheets or measured throughput. Recommended monthly volume remains unestablished.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette plus one-sheet manual feed. Capacity footnote is 80 g/m² / 21 lb paper in this original. Letter, Legal and A4 input is documented for the US configuration. Both-sides printing is manual removal and refeeding; no automatic duplex unit. Suitable envelopes use manual feed and are not duplexed.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Full-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel with GDI emulation and 8 MB memory. NC-2200w wireless and NC-2100p Ethernet devices are optional. HL-2070N built-in network and PCL emulation are excluded. Original Windows 95/NT 4.0 do not support USB.

Supplies and declared yields

Original guide declares a 1,500-page starter subject to model/country qualification and a 2,500-page standard toner at 5% Letter/A4 coverage, not ISO/IEC yields. Separate drum approximately 12,000 pages at one page per job. No remaining-life claim for a particular used machine.

Electrical edition and setup

Discontinued exact US model. USA/Canada AC 110–120 V, 50/60 Hz; Europe/Australia separately 220–240 V. Body 14.6 × 14.2 × 6.5 in. and 14.3 lb including drum and toner. Original asks for ventilation clearance, including approximately four inches at the ventilation hole; loading and service space are additional.
