HL-2140Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible local desktop that needs ordinary monochrome pages and can accommodate manual two-sided paper handling.

The main tradeoff

The exact HL-2140 has USB only; the network connections in its shared guide belong to other models.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can this earlier USB model provide 250 sheets of Letter input at a stated 23 Letter ppm?

Qualifies for the included cassette and the maker’s one-sided Letter rating, using a compatible USB desktop driver. No network or scanner function is part of this arrangement.

Will it automatically print both sides of my Letter documents?

Fails: the documented duplex routine is manual. The user reloads the printed stack before the second side prints.

Can I connect the exact HL-2140 directly to Ethernet?

Fails: this exact model has USB only. The Ethernet entries in the shared guide apply to the HL-2150N and HL-2170W.

A local printer with a clear connection limit

The Brother HL-2140 suits a compatible desktop that needs ordinary monochrome laser printing over USB. Its 250-sheet cassette keeps regular paper ready, and a separate one-sheet manual feed handles occasional suitable special media. The deciding tradeoff is simple: this exact model has neither included networking nor automatic two-sided printing. It works best when one computer and a willingness to handle duplex paper manually fit the routine.

This is an earlier equipment reference based on Brother’s original USA guide and exact support table. A surviving support page does not establish present stock, unit condition or compatibility with every current operating system. The HL-2140 is print-only; it has no scanner, copier or fax hardware. Those requirements need a different kind of device rather than another software download.

The cassette and manual slot do different jobs

The main cassette holds up to 250 sheets on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² paper basis. It supports ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 dimensions. That capacity is useful for normal document work, but it should not be applied indiscriminately to thicker paper or envelopes. The manual feed is a one-sheet route, not a second cassette that provides another stack of ready paper.

The original instructions explain selecting the correct media type and using the appropriate path for suitable envelopes and thicker sheets. Follow those settings and loading directions for each job. A printer that can feed an envelope is not necessarily able to turn that envelope through a duplex routine. The manual’s supported paper and envelope instructions matter more than treating all media as interchangeable.

Two-sided output requires refeeding

Brother describes Manual Duplex as a staged process: print the even-numbered pages, put the sheets back in the specified orientation, then print the odd-numbered pages. The guide gives separate handling directions for the cassette and manual feed. A duplex option displayed in the driver therefore does not mean this machine has an automatic duplex unit.

The declared one-sided speed is up to 23 Letter pages per minute or 22 A4 pages per minute. Those are different page-size conditions, and neither is a claim about completed two-sided sheets. They are manufacturer figures, not measurements made for this article. Someone who regularly prints long two-sided documents should weigh the interruptions and stack handling against an exact model with positively documented automatic duplex.

Read the interface columns before sharing it

The HL-2140’s standard connection is Full-Speed USB 2.0. Its original configuration uses 8 MB of memory and a GDI printing system with a compatible computer driver. The shared manual also covers the HL-2150N and HL-2170W, whose Ethernet, wireless and print-language entries must not be transferred to this base model. An Ethernet cable cannot create a port that the printer does not contain.

Confirm the driver and actual USB arrangement for the computer in use. Old operating-system tables describe their original supported environments; they do not promise support for every later platform. AirPrint and Mopria are not established here, and a modern generic support menu is not evidence that those protocols have been added to this earlier USB device.

Supplies, size and an honest earlier-model choice

The original guide declares approximately 1,000 pages for the supplied starter toner, 1,500 for TN-330 and 2,600 for TN-360, under ISO/IEC 19752 conditions. The separate DR-360 drum declaration is approximately 12,000 pages at one page per job. These figures distinguish supplied and replacement consumables; they are not remaining-life estimates for a particular unit or a current cost calculation. A numeric recommended monthly volume is unestablished in the read exact material.

The USA/Canada edition specifies 110–120 VAC. The body measures 14.5 × 14.2 × 6.7 inches. Brother’s US web table explicitly gives 15.0 lb with consumables, while the original guide lists an unqualified 12.8 lb; that discrepancy should not be concealed by inventing an unloaded label. Allow loading and service clearance beyond the closed body. Choose it for compatible local monochrome work; require an exact networked or automatic-duplex model when those functions are essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 23 one-sided Letter ppm or 22 A4 ppm in the original guide. These are manufacturer print ratings, not automatic-duplex throughput or measured results here.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis, covering Letter, Legal and A4. The separate manual feed takes one sheet or suitable envelope and is not counted as another full tray.

Computer and mobile connections

Full-Speed USB 2.0 and an 8 MB GDI printing configuration. Ethernet belongs to the HL-2150N/HL-2170W columns; wireless belongs to HL-2170W. No included network route is assigned to HL-2140.

Supplies and declared yields

Original ISO/IEC 19752 declarations: approximately 1,000-page starter toner, TN-330 1,500 pages and TN-360 2,600 pages. DR-360 drum declaration is approximately 12,000 pages at one page per job.

Electrical edition and setup

USA/Canada edition specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Body measures 14.5 × 14.2 × 6.7 in. US web table explicitly gives 15.0 lb with consumables; original guide gives an unqualified 12.8 lb, retained as a source conflict rather than silently relabeled as unloaded weight.
