HL-2230Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Compatible local desktops producing monochrome documents with occasional manually fed special sheets.

The main tradeoff

No built-in networking or automatic duplex; native software compatibility must be checked.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it print Letter documents locally through USB at a declared 24 ppm with 250 included sheets?

Yes, using a compatible native driver. The actual original assigns that speed and cassette capacity to the HL-2230 group.

Will it automatically finish two-sided documents without reloading the paper?

No. Its exact automatic-duplex entry is unavailable, and the operating routine requires manual stack refeeding.

Does it include Ethernet for direct wired sharing?

No. The exact HL-2230 controller is USB-only; network entries in the shared guide belong to other models.

A small USB printer for an established desktop

The Brother HL-2230 is an earlier monochrome laser reference for a compatible computer that needs straightforward local printing. Its 250-sheet cassette and separate manual slot cover everyday paper and occasional special sheets without a large cabinet. The deciding tradeoff is its connection and duplex arrangement: USB is the included interface, and two-sided output needs a person to reload the pages.

The original USA/CAN guide names the HL-2230 on its cover and groups it with the HL-2240 in specific tables. That is useful evidence for this exact model, while the different network and automatic-duplex columns remain separate. This is a dedicated printer with no scanner, copier or fax hardware.

Use a compatible host-based USB driver

The controller has eight megabytes of memory and Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Its network and emulation entries are unavailable. The PCL6 and Ethernet/wireless features in the shared manual belong to specified network variants, rather than this local printer.

Check the intended operating system and applicable native driver before depending on a surviving machine. A USB cable fitting the port is not enough to establish a complete working print arrangement. Select the correct printer queue and confirm a normal document can be produced with the desired paper and layout settings.

The original lists several dated computer environments, so this assessment does not promise universal compatibility with present-day systems. It also does not infer AirPrint, Mopria or a direct wireless route from generic family software or a host computer’s own network access.

Keep everyday paper in the cassette

The main tray supports Letter, Legal and A4, with up to 250 sheets of the stated ordinary paper. The manual slot takes one suitable sheet at a time. It is convenient for an occasional envelope, label or thicker sheet, but it is not another ordinary-paper stack that should increase the included capacity figure.

The actual envelope operation opens the rear face-up output path, lowers the two designated green levers and uses the manual feed with the proper media setting. Keep the sheet straight, feed only one at a time and restore the levers after the envelope job. Leave working room behind the printer; a closed body measurement does not include that operation.

Two-sided documents require a second handling step

The exact HL-2230 column marks automatic duplex unavailable. In the native Windows manual-duplex routine, even-numbered pages print first. A prompt then tells the user to reinsert the stack for the odd-numbered pages. Correct order, face and orientation are part of finishing the document.

The guide excludes media with a specified print face, including envelopes and labels, from this manual two-sided routine. Straighten the stack before reloading it, and avoid treating manual refeeding as unattended duplex hardware. A model with a documented automatic duplex unit is the practical alternative for regular two-sided batches.

The original’s A4/Letter one-sided speed row assigns up to twenty-four pages per minute to the HL-2230/HL-2240 group. The twenty-seven-page and automatic-duplex entries belong to other columns. These are maker engine declarations, not a personal timing test or a rate for completed two-sided sheets.

Supplies and placement are clearly separated

The exact HL-2230 supply branch identifies approximately 700 pages for the supplied starter toner. TN-420 replacement toner is approximately 1,200 pages and TN-450 approximately 2,600 Letter/A4 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate DR-420 drum is declared at approximately 12,000 pages at one page per job. Those declarations do not measure the remaining supply life of a particular unit.

The body measures approximately 14.5 inches wide, 14.2 deep and 7.2 high. Its 14.8-pound loaded weight explicitly includes toner and drum, unlike the smaller unloaded weight or larger carton figure. The exact specification and USA/CAN original give 110–120 V AC power.

No recommended monthly range or native held-job PIN routine is established from the read sources. Choose a documented network printer when direct sharing matters, or an appropriate multifunction model when the same workstation must also capture originals.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original A4/Letter single-sided row assigns up to 24 ppm to HL-2230/HL-2240. Neighboring 27 ppm and automatic-duplex ratings are excluded. No numerical recommended monthly volume established.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette plus separate one-sheet manual slot, stated 20 lb / 80 g/m². Ordinary Letter/Legal/A4. Actual manual duplex requires reloading and excludes envelopes/labels with a specified print face. Suitable envelopes use manual feed, rear output and designated green levers.

Computer and mobile connections

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 only, 8 MB host-based controller. Exact network/emulation entries unavailable. PCL6, Ethernet/wireless and automatic duplex in nearby columns belong to other variants.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact 2230 starter approximately 700 pages. TN-420 approximately 1,200 / TN-450 approximately 2,600 Letter/A4 pages, ISO/IEC 19752. DR-420 approximately 12,000 at one page/job.

Electrical edition and setup

Actual USA/CAN guide includes HL-2230 and confirms US identity independently of inherited Other-countries selector. 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Body W 14.5 × D 14.2 × H 7.2 in.; 14.8 lb includes toner and drum, not the unloaded or carton weight.
