The Brother HL-2240D suits a compatible local computer that regularly prints monochrome documents on both sides of suitable paper. Its 250-sheet cassette keeps ordinary stock ready, and the included automatic duplex unit removes the refeeding step required by bare HL-2240. The deciding tradeoff is connectivity: this remains a USB print-only device, without built-in networking or a scanner.
Brother marks the exact model discontinued. Treat this as an earlier equipment reference rather than a claim about current stock, individual condition or support for every new operating system. The model suffix matters. A feature belonging to the D configuration should not be erased by the base model’s table, and network features from other siblings should not be added to it.
Use the original hardware table to resolve conflicting cells
The current product description positively advertises automatic duplex, but a generic specification cell says No and another describes four toner cartridges. Those cells conflict with the actual HL-2240D brochure and original model table, which establish monochrome laser output and an automatic duplex unit. The exact original hardware evidence is the sound basis for this assessment.
The same product page’s linked system-requirements PDF actually identifies HL-L9200CDWT. That unrelated sheet is preserved as a source error and excluded from compatibility claims. A filename or link caption is not enough to establish the contents of an original document. The correct USA/Canada guide explicitly includes both HL-2240 and HL-2240D and distinguishes their hardware columns.
Automatic duplex still has paper conditions
The included main cassette holds up to 250 sheets of the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain paper, including Letter, Legal and A4 sizes. A separate one-sheet manual feed handles suitable envelopes and other documented media. It is not a multipurpose stack tray, even if a generic page heading calls it one. Use the proper source, media setting and loading direction for each job.
The US automatic-duplex list is Letter, Legal and Folio. Ordinary A4 paper support therefore does not establish A4 automatic duplex in this regional configuration. The original print table gives up to 24 one-sided ppm for Letter and A4, while the brochure separately declares 10 sides per minute in duplex mode. A compatible USB desktop is the intended arrangement
Hi-Speed USB 2.0 is the included computer connection. The documented configuration has 8 MB of memory and uses the appropriate GDI printer driver.
