Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can native Wi-Fi combine mono Legal duplex output, color Letter flatbed scanning and 250 included Legal sheets?
Qualifies with compatible native software and suitable paper. Original capture uses the Letter/A4 glass; no document feeder is included.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan a stack automatically through a document feeder?
Fails: the exact HL-2280DW has only a flatbed; the shared manual reserves the feeder for DCP-7065DN.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan a Legal original from the glass?
Fails: glass length is 11.7 in., shorter than Legal; Legal output support does not enlarge capture size.

The Brother HL-2280DW is a discontinued monochrome laser machine with convenience copying and color flatbed scanning. Its useful fit is a compatible desk handling individual originals while producing black two-sided documents through USB, Ethernet or ordinary Wi-Fi. It has no automatic document feeder or telephone fax.
The exact operating original is necessary because the generic product table contains a no-duplex entry, four-toner description and processor information that conflict with this model’s actual specifications. The dedicated US specification, original basic guide and applicable duplex FAQ positively document automatic two-sided printing. That resolves output hardware without inventing a scanner feeder.
Color originals are placed on the glass individually
The glass accepts originals up to 8.5 × 11.7 inches, supporting Letter and A4. Place an original face down at the indicated corner and use the compatible scanning software. Legal paper can be printed, but a fourteen-inch Legal original does not fit this glass. The shared guide explicitly excludes HL-2280DW from the ADF available on DCP-7065DN.
Native ControlCenter’s PDF routine selects the actual model, file format, destination folder, resolution and document size. TWAIN also provides an individual-original preview and crop routine. Color capture is positively supported even though copied and printed output is black. The original 600 × 2400 dpi optical glass resolution is separate from the much larger interpolated figure; neither adds automatic reverse-side capture.
Three native connection arrangements
Hi-Speed USB, Fast Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g Wi-Fi are included. The original computer table supports compatible desktop printing and scanning through the applicable interfaces, while Windows Server rows are network-print-only. Network capture also needs the appropriate scanner driver and usable address configuration.
These are native computer arrangements with historical software requirements. Their existence does not establish AirPrint, Mopria, a peer connection or a modern protected-job workflow. The shared software guide’s Secure Key explicitly names MFC variants rather than this HL. Confirm a working driver for the intended computer instead of assuming every current operating system exposes all historical functions.
250 ordinary sheets and regional duplex limits
The cassette holds 250 sheets on the stated plain-paper basis and supports Letter, Legal and A4. The separate manual slot feeds one sheet at a time for suitable envelopes and other special stock. That occasional feed is not a second full paper tray, and envelope handling does not establish automatic envelope duplex.
The exact US basic guide, software operation and specification list Letter, Legal and Folio for automatic output duplex. A general multi-model FAQ also names A4; that broader wording is retained as a source difference rather than used to enlarge the regional operating list. Suitable media, a closed back cover and the correct native Duplex/Booklet setting remain part of the routine.
Original speed, consumables and the shorter body
One-sided output is declared up to twenty-seven Letter pages per minute. The basic guide separately states automatic duplex speed in its original pages-per-minute units. These are manufacturer declarations rather than personal measurements. No recurring monthly recommendation is inferred from either speed or toner capacity.
The included toner is declared at approximately 700 pages. TN-420 and TN-450 replacements have different ISO/IEC 19752 yields, and the separate DR-420 drum has an approximate 12,000-page declaration at one page per job. These figures do not establish current supply cost or remaining life.
The loaded body is 15.95 × 15.7 × 10.6 inches and 22.7 lb, shorter than the feeder-equipped DCP in the same guide. The US edition requires 110–120 VAC. Leave glass-lid, cassette, rear-output and maintenance access. A workload built around unattended stacks needs a genuinely feeder-equipped alternative.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact up to 27 one-sided Letter ppm, not DCP-7060D 24. Basic guide separately states automatic duplex up to 5 pages/minute Letter in original units, not normalized into sheets. No sourced recurring monthly recommendation or maximum duty is asserted.
Paper handling
250-sheet cassette at 20 lb / 80 g/m² supports Letter/Legal/A4, plus separate single-sheet manual slot. Exact US basic/software/spec automatic-duplex subset Letter, Legal, Folio. General 2026 multi-model FAQ includes A4 too; conflict retained without enlarging regional claim. Suitable envelopes use separate manual/straight-output routine; output duplex stock 16–28 lb.
Scanning arrangement
Original specifically excludes HL-2280DW from the ADF; flatbed maximum 8.5 × 11.7 in. supports Letter/A4, not Legal. Color/mono capture positive; glass optical 600 × 2400 dpi differs from 19,200 interpolated dpi. ControlCenter PDF routine selects actual model, file type, destination, resolution and size; native TWAIN supports ordinary preview/crop for individual originals.
Computer and mobile connections
Included Hi-Speed USB,10/100 Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g Wi-Fi; 32 MB, two-line LCD and PCL6. Compatible desktop USB/LAN/wireless printing and computer scanning are positive; Server rows network-print-only. Shared software’s Secure Key is MFC-only, not HL-2280DW. No built-in fax or unverified AirPrint/Mopria/Wi-Fi Direct route asserted.
Supplies and declared yields
Approximately 700-page starter, TN-420 replacement approximately 1,200 and TN-450 approximately 2,600 pages under ISO/IEC 19752 Letter conditions. Separate DR-420 approximately 12,000 pages at one page per job; actual life varies. No current supply cost, remaining toner or hands-on quality result is invented.
Software and support
Use matching native printer/scanner software and a suitable network address. Windows automatic duplex selects Duplex/Booklet and binding settings; back cover closed and suitable straightened paper are required. USB and ordinary network scanning remain separate supported plans. The FAQ’s historical macOS Two-Sided control excludes OS X 10.4; do not assume every current OS exposes all original controls.
Electrical edition and setup
USA/CAN original 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Personally viewed exact body 15.95 × 15.7 × 10.6 in., 22.7 lb with toner/drum, not 25.1 lb DCP-7065DN or carton 27.8 lb. Allow glass-lid, cassette, rear-output, cable and service space; verify usable historical native software and network arrangement.
