A useful fit for

A compatible desktop or wired workgroup needing ordinary color pages and supported native password-held jobs without automatic duplex.

The main tradeoff

The exact model is host-based and lacks the neighboring model’s radio, PCL/BR-Script emulations and flash direct-print socket.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Ethernet print color Legal pages with protected native jobs, 250 sheets and 17 Letter ppm?

Qualifies with compatible native host-based software and suitable paper. Protected release is documented; two-sided output still requires manual refeeding.

Can automatic print duplex be essential?

Fails: the actual documented routine is manual duplex. The operator must reload pages for the second side.

Color LED output in a wired arrangement

The Brother HL-3040CN is an earlier color LED printer with USB and included Ethernet. It fits a compatible desktop or wired workgroup needing ordinary color documents, a 250-sheet cassette and supported native password-held jobs. It is print-only, with no scanner, copier or fax hardware. Two-sided output requires manual refeeding.

The original calls its imaging technology electrophotographic LED. Its single-pass color engine describes how it creates a printed page; it does not imply single-pass scanning or automatic two-sided paper handling. The exact CN controller is host-based, with PCL and BR-Script listed as unavailable. Those emulations, wireless hardware and flash direct printing on HL-3070CW are excluded here. Its thirty-two megabytes of included memory can expand with an optional module; that does not add missing emulation hardware or a radio.

Included input and separate special media

The cassette holds 250 sheets on the stated 20 lb plain-paper basis. The exact US table includes Letter, Legal and A4. A separate single-sheet manual path handles suitable envelopes and other instructed stock. There is no larger multipurpose tray or optional lower paper tray in this configuration.

The actual envelope routine opens the rear path and adjusts the instructed levers before feeding one envelope at a time. Those settings and the permitted media still matter. Ordinary input capacity is not an envelope-capacity promise, and an Ethernet connection does not remove the need to follow the paper-path instructions.

Manual duplex and protected native jobs

The original duplex routine prints even pages first, then asks the operator to reload the sheets in the correct order and orientation for odd pages. Separate instructions cover the cassette and manual feed. The completed document can be two-sided, but that operator intervention makes it manual duplex. It therefore fails an automatic-duplex requirement.

Native Secure Print is positively documented. A supported confidential job waits for user, job and password selection at the control panel. Protected data clears after printing or at power-off, and finite spooling memory can produce an out-of-memory message. That specific routine is separate from general network security. AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct remain unestablished in the exact readings.

Letter rates and model-specific supplies

The exact US source and original rate one-sided output up to seventeen Letter pages per minute in both black and color, separately from sixteen at A4. Those are manufacturer declarations rather than personal measurements. No exact numerical recommended monthly volume is established in the read sources, so output rate is not converted into a workload recommendation.

The original starter toner declaration is approximately 1,000 A4/Letter simplex pages under ISO/IEC 19798. It separates non-European TN-210 supply codes from European TN-230 codes: TN-210 black is approximately 2,200 pages and the three colors approximately 1,400 each. Drum, belt and waste-toner box have separate declared lives and conditions. These figures do not establish present running cost or remaining life.

Regional power and actual installation space

The body measures 16.1 × 18.3 × 9.8 inches. The US table's 48.5 lb figure is carton weight, while the original's 41.9 lb unit declaration lacks an established loaded-supply basis. Neither is substituted for a verified loaded-weight field. The original explicitly distinguishes the USA's 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz edition from the 220–240 V European, Chilean and Argentine editions.

Confirm the actual rating plate, usable host-based software and local supply identity before relying on an earlier unit. Leave cassette, manual-feed, rear-path, toner, cable and maintenance room beyond the cabinet. If automatic duplex, a wireless radio or a PCL-based application is essential, choose an exact model documenting it rather than assuming a neighboring controller or accessory will fit.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 17 one-sided Letter ppm in both color and black, separately from 16 A4 ppm. LED electrophotographic imaging is named honestly; a single-pass color print engine does not imply a scanner or duplex original-capture method. No numerical recommended monthly volume or maximum duty established.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette plus single-sheet manual feed on stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis; ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 supported in the exact US table. No MP tray or optional lower tray. Actual duplex routine is manual even-page output, operator refeeding and odd-page output. Suitable envelopes use the instructed manual/rear straight-through route.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB and 10/100 Ethernet; 32 MB expandable with optional memory. Host-based controller: PCL and BR-Script are N/A on exact HL-3040CN. HL-3070CW wireless and front flash direct print are excluded. Native password-held printing is positive; Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint and Mopria remain unestablished.

Supplies and declared yields

Original starter toner declaration approximately 1,000 A4/Letter simplex pages under ISO/IEC 19798. Non-European codes TN-210BK approximately 2,200 and TN-210C/M/Y approximately 1,400 each; European TN-230 codes are kept separate. DR-210 drum family approximately 15,000 at one page per job, BU-200CL belt and WT-200CL waste box approximately 50,000 with stated conditions. No current cost estimate.

Software and support

Exact original native Secure Print routine holds a supported password-protected job until panel user/job/password selection. Data clears after printing or power-off; finite spooling memory can produce Out of Memory. No password length or unverified mobile-protocol bridge is invented. Current usable driver support requires checking on the actual host.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US unit body 16.1 × 18.3 × 9.8 in., distinct from carton dimensions. US table’s 48.5 lb is carton weight; original 41.9 lb unit declaration lacks established loaded basis, so loaded weight remains unknown. Original explicitly specifies USA/other local editions at 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz, separate from European/Chile/Argentina 220–240 V. Verify actual plate and allow paper, rear-path, toner, cable and service clearance.
