HL-3180CDWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Color desktop output with occasional Letter/A4 glass scanning and separate mobile printing.

The main tradeoff

No feeder, Legal glass or fax; document batches require manual page placement.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I scan Letter originals in color on the glass and print Letter duplex over ordinary Wi-Fi?

Yes, with compatible native desktop print/scanner software and a configured wireless network. Each original must be placed on the glass.

Can a feeder scan my multipage stack automatically?

No. The actual single-model guide documents glass-only loading; this model has no feeder.

Can it scan a full Legal page on the glass?

No. The glass reaches only 11.8 inches; Legal output support does not extend the scanner.

Color printing and copying with flatbed-only originals

The Brother HL-3180CDW is an earlier US/Canada color multifunction reference for a desk that needs printing, copying and occasional color scanning. Its useful combination is automatic two-sided printed output, ordinary wireless sharing and a touchscreen. The deciding tradeoff is original handling: every document goes on the glass, one page at a time. There is no automatic document feeder or conventional fax function to borrow from a similarly styled MFC model.

The exact original identifies an electrophotographic LED engine. It uses toner and separate drum components, while the light source is LED rather than a laser beam. That makes it a toner-based office printing option without changing its actual document-loading limits. This assessment uses the dated original operating reference and makes no claim about current availability.

The glass is useful for pages that should not be fed

The document glass accepts originals up to 8.5 inches wide and 11.8 inches long, covering Letter and A4. It suits a book page or an appropriate original that would be unsuitable for a feeder. Follow the placement guides and close the lid gently; Brother specifically warns against pressing or slamming the cover over a thick book.

A Legal sheet is longer than the documented glass limit. Legal printing support therefore does not establish full Legal scanning. A multipage scan is a series of manual placements rather than an unattended stack. Choose a model with an appropriate feeder when document batches are routine, and check the feeder’s actual size range separately.

Native computer capture and mobile printing need different controls

Hi-Speed USB and ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi are the documented computer interfaces. The original explicitly supports network printing and scanning, and its ControlCenter routine saves scanned data to the selected computer folder. A network installation needs a working scanner driver and TCP/IP configuration; finding the printer on a network does not by itself complete the scan setup.

The actual AirPrint guide includes HL-3180CDW by name and describes a supported Apple device using the appropriate wireless arrangement. Wi-Fi Direct is also documented hardware, distinct from ordinary infrastructure Wi-Fi. These mobile and peer-printing paths remain separate from the native desktop capture arrangement. The source does not establish an Ethernet interface for this model.

Input paper size is broader than automatic duplex size

The standard cassette holds 250 sheets of the specified plain stock. A separate manual slot takes one suitable envelope or special sheet at a time. Letter, Legal and A4 fit ordinary input, while the US/Canada automatic output-duplex list is Letter, Legal and Folio. Loading A4 for one-sided printing does not add it to that regional duplex list.

The original declares up to twenty-three one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color. Two-sided output is separately up to seven printed sides, or 3.5 sheets, per minute. These are maker declarations rather than measured results from an individual printer. Neither speed figure provides a numerical recommended monthly workload in the read sources.

Keep toner and the other maintenance parts separate

The exact inbox declaration is approximately 1,000 pages for black and each color under ISO/IEC 19798. Standard TN-221 black is approximately 2,500 pages and each standard color 1,400. The TN-225 high-yield option applies to colors at approximately 2,200 pages; the table does not list a matching high-yield black cartridge.

The DR-221 drum declaration is approximately 15,000 pages at one page per job. Belt and waste box each have separate approximate 50,000-page declarations and their own identities. Toner exhaustion therefore should not be treated as a measurement of every maintenance component’s remaining life.

The loaded cabinet weighs 47.8 pounds and measures approximately 16.1 inches wide, nineteen deep and 14.4 high. Allow lid, rear-exit and maintenance room beyond the closed body. The USA/CAN original specifies 110–120 V AC. Compare a feeder-equipped color model for stacks or long originals, and verify usable software when retaining this earlier platform.
