HL-4070CDWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Compatible networks needing color documents, US Letter/Legal automatic duplex and native held jobs.

The main tradeoff

Dated wireless and driver support require checking; additional paper capacity is optional and no scanner is included.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can its ordinary Wi-Fi setup print Legal color documents automatically on both sides with native password release?

Yes, when a compatible router and native driver are used. The included 300-sheet arrangement supports Legal; the US paper routine and temporary held-job limits still apply.

Can the included configuration meet a 500-sheet Letter input requirement?

No. It includes 300 ordinary sheets. The additional 500-sheet lower tray is an optional purchase.

Does the wireless ad-hoc mode establish Wi-Fi Direct peer support?

No. These are distinct arrangements; the read sources establish infrastructure/ad-hoc wireless but not Wi-Fi Direct.

A color printer whose wireless generation matters

The Brother HL-4070CDW is an earlier US color laser reference for a compatible office that needs printing through a wired network, USB or its documented wireless network arrangement. It includes automatic two-sided output and 300 sheets of ordinary-paper input. The deciding check is the complete setup: a usable driver and a router compatible with its IEEE 802.11b/g radio matter more than the presence of the word wireless in the model description.

This is a print-only machine. Its single-pass electrophotographic description concerns the color print engine, not a document scanner. It cannot replace a multifunction unit for scanning, copying or fax. A two-line display and direct-file printing features also do not supply those missing document functions.

Its interfaces are genuinely different from the wired variants

The exact original assigns Hi-Speed USB 2.0, 10/100 Ethernet, IEEE 1284 parallel and wireless LAN to the HL-4070CDW. Its controller includes PCL6 and BR-Script 3, with sixty-four megabytes of standard memory and documented expansion. These are positive model-specific entries, rather than features borrowed from a broad family heading.

Use the compatible native driver and confirm a normal document reaches the intended queue. Ordinary wireless infrastructure and ad-hoc modes are documented. Neither name establishes Wi-Fi Direct, and no AirPrint or Mopria promise is made from these read operating sources. Check the actual router configuration and applicable software before relying on the printer in a new environment.

The front direct USB interface supports particular file and camera routines. It should be considered separately from the computer USB connection. Its ability to print a TIFF created by a Brother scanner does not mean the printer can create that scan itself.

Count the installed paper configuration

The standard cassette takes up to 250 sheets, while the multipurpose tray takes another fifty sheets of the specified plain stock. Their ordinary size ranges accommodate Letter, Legal and A4. A separately purchased LT-100CL lower tray can add 500 sheets, but the included configuration remains 300. A used printer’s actual installed trays should be checked rather than inferred from a family maximum.

The USA original’s automatic-duplex instructions specify Letter, Legal or Folio, using suitable plain, recycled or thin paper. Its operating section is the useful rule when the web specification also presents a separate A4-region duplex branch. A4 ordinary input does not establish automatic A4 duplex for the assessed US configuration.

Suitable envelopes use the multipurpose tray and the prescribed envelope media setting. The exact web table describes up to three envelopes separately from the fifty-sheet ordinary-paper limit. The guide excludes envelope duplex and warns that envelope construction can affect feeding. There is no face-up straight paper path, so allow for the documented output and removal routine.

Held jobs are temporary, password-protected output

The native Secure Print routine stores a submitted password-protected document until the user selects the user and job at the printer, enters the password and requests printing. The original covers both driver submission and panel retrieval, making this a real protected-job operation rather than a generic security label.

Its limits are practical. Secure data is deleted after printing once, is lost when power is switched off, and can be deleted as the spool area fills. Memory should not be treated as a durable document archive. The appropriate alternative for a different mobile or managed print workflow is a model whose exact software and release routine are documented for that workflow.

Separate engine rates, supplies and room requirements

The declared one-sided rate is up to twenty-one Letter pages per minute in color or monochrome, separately from twenty A4 pages per minute. Duplex is up to seven printed sides, or three-and-a-half completed sheets, per minute. Wireless transfer, document content and calibration can change the actual job time; these figures are not personal measurements.

The US supply table identifies TN-110 standard and TN-115 high-yield toner: black approximately 2,500 or 5,000 pages, and each color approximately 1,500 or 4,000 at five-percent Letter/A4 coverage. Inbox yield is left unresolved. The DR-110CL drum, BU-100CL belt and WT-100CL waste box have separate maintenance declarations.

The cabinet is approximately 16.5 inches wide, 18.7 deep and 12.5 high. The listed 64.2-pound unit weight lacks a clear loaded-consumables basis, so loaded-weight matching remains unknown. Confirm the actual US rating label and allow additional tray, maintenance and lifting access.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 21 one-sided Letter / 20 A4 ppm in monochrome and color. Duplex up to 7 sides / 3.5 sheets per minute. Actual wireless transfer can affect output. No recommended monthly volume established.

Paper handling

300 included ordinary sheets: 250 cassette + 50 multipurpose at 20 lb / 80 g/m². Optional LT-100CL 500-sheet tray excluded. US automatic duplex Letter/Legal/Folio; ordinary A4 remains supported. Up to three suitable envelopes in the multipurpose tray, one-sided only.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB 2.0, 10/100 Ethernet, IEEE 1284 parallel and IEEE 802.11b/g wireless infrastructure/ad-hoc. Ad-hoc is not Wi-Fi Direct. 64 MB standard; PCL6 and BR-Script 3. Front direct-file USB is distinct from computer USB.

Supplies and declared yields

TN-110: black approximately 2,500, each color 1,500 pages. TN-115: black approximately 5,000, each color 4,000. Letter/A4 at 5% coverage. Inbox yield unresolved. DR-110CL approximately 17,000 at one page/job; BU-100CL approximately 50,000; WT-100CL approximately 20,000 at 5% for each CMYK.

Electrical edition and setup

Body W 16.5 × D 18.7 × H 12.5 in. Unit weight 64.2 lb lacks a clear loaded-consumables basis and is not used for loaded-weight matching. Exact operating power follows the rating label; no mains value inferred from the guide’s voltage-specific laser-safety appendix.
