HL-5040Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Compatible USB desktops needing mainly one-sided monochrome pages and occasional special sheets.

The main tradeoff

Ethernet requires an optional print server; duplex needs manual handling and supply figures contain a documented conflict.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it handle USB Letter printing with 250 included sheets and a declared 17 Letter ppm?

Yes, with a compatible native driver. The cassette and exact Letter-speed declaration support that local arrangement.

Does the normal configuration include Ethernet without an added print server?

No. Ethernet is an optional accessory arrangement, while USB and parallel are standard.

Can it finish both printed sides automatically?

No. The operating guide requires manual stack or sheet refeeding for two-sided output.

A local mono printer with a single-sheet special feed

The Brother HL-5040 is a discontinued monochrome laser reference for a compatible computer that needs local printing and an ordinary 250-sheet cassette. Its deciding limits are straightforward: networking requires an optional print server, and two-sided output requires manual paper reloading. The separate one-sheet manual feed is useful for occasional special media, but this model does not include the fifty-sheet multipurpose tray found on higher variants.

The exact US page identifies the HL-5040 as discontinued and no longer updated. The original guide names it separately from the HL-5030, HL-5050 and HL-5070N. Those family differences matter more than a common cabinet style when checking a surviving machine.

Check the native driver and standard interfaces

The standard controller has eight megabytes of memory and PCL6 support. Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel are the included interfaces. The original explains optional memory expansion up to 136 megabytes, but additional memory is not part of the standard configuration.

Ethernet is a separate accessory arrangement. The exact specification distinguishes the applicable optional 10BaseT and 10/100 print servers from the included USB/parallel ports. A network utility appearing elsewhere in the family guide does not prove that an HL-5040 has a network adapter installed.

Confirm the intended operating system, compatible native driver and actual printer queue before relying on it. The dated guide’s computer list does not establish universal modern compatibility. This is a dedicated printer, so no scanner, copier or fax hardware is available through either local port.

Handle ordinary sheets and envelopes differently

The main cassette accepts Letter, Legal and A4 within its ordinary size list and holds up to 250 sheets of the stated plain stock. A separately purchased 250-sheet lower cassette is an expansion, not part of included capacity. The manual slot takes one suitable sheet at a time, with the next sheet loaded after the previous page exits.

For an envelope, the actual operating chapter selects the manual feed and opens the rear output tray to make a straight paper path. It explains the feed guides, print-face orientation and handling of the designated blue tabs when correcting creases. Never turn the manual slot into a stack feeder by loading several envelopes at once.

The closed cabinet depth is therefore only part of planning its location. The rear path, cassette access and routine maintenance require additional room. Check the actual paper construction and media setting before a larger job rather than assuming every sheet of a supported size behaves identically.

Two-sided work requires the operator

The native PCL routine prints the even-numbered pages first, then asks the user to return the stack in the correct orientation for the odd-numbered pages. The guide also provides the applicable single-sheet manual-feed routine. Straighten the printed sheets before reloading and follow the original’s paper restrictions.

There is no automatic duplex unit in the exact HL-5040 paper table. The declared engine rate of up to seventeen one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately from sixteen A4 pages per minute, cannot describe the pace of a manually finished duplex batch.

Job Spooling is a separate reprint function operated with the Go button. The original advises disabling reprint to stop other people repeating the output. It does not establish a print job held until a PIN is entered, so that requirement remains unknown.

Retain the supply and weight discrepancies

The web table declares approximately 3,000 standard-toner pages, while the original says 3,300 at five-percent Letter/A4 coverage. That conflict remains visible. Both sources declare approximately 6,500 for high yield and approximately 20,000 drum pages at one page per job. Inbox toner yield is not established.

The original explicitly lists 23.4 pounds including drum and toner; the web lists 23.1 without that clear loaded basis. The loaded original is used here. Dimensions are approximately 15.0 inches wide, 15.1 deep and 9.9 high. The USA/Canada power branch specifies 110–120 V AC. Choose a documented network or automatic-duplex printer when direct sharing or unattended two-sided output is essential.

Paper handling

250-sheet ordinary cassette plus one-sheet manual feed. Letter/Legal/A4. Optional 250-sheet lower cassette excluded. Exact web capacity basis 80 g/m² versus original 75 g/m² / 20 lb retained. Envelopes use manual feed and rear output.

Computer and mobile connections

8 MB standard memory, PCL6, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel. Optional print server required for Ethernet; no included network plan. Actual option chapter permits up to 136 MB total with added memory. Job Spooling is Go-button reprint.

Supplies and declared yields

Standard-toner discrepancy: web approximately 3,000 versus original 3,300 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage. High yield approximately 6,500. Separate drum approximately 20,000 at one page/job. Inbox yield unresolved.

Electrical edition and setup

Body W 15.0 × D 15.1 × H 9.9 in. Original 23.4 lb explicitly includes drum and toner and is used instead of web 23.1 lb unqualified. USA/Canada 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Allow rear-feed and maintenance access.
