HL-5050Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Compatible USB desktops needing stack-fed ordinary paper and occasional rear-path envelope printing.

The main tradeoff

Networking needs an optional print server and two-sided output needs manual reloading through the supported driver.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it print monochrome Legal documents locally over USB with 300 included sheets?

Yes, with the compatible native driver. Both the 250-sheet cassette and 50-sheet multipurpose feed accept Legal ordinary paper.

Does it include Ethernet as standard like the HL-5070N?

No. Its exact column assigns networking to optional print servers; standard ports are USB and parallel.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can the printer handle two-sided batches automatically because it supports BR-Script?

No. Duplex is manual, and the PS driver does not support that manual-duplex feature. A page language does not add a duplex unit.

A local printer with a useful multipurpose stack

The Brother HL-5050 is a discontinued monochrome laser reference for a compatible desktop that needs more flexible paper feeding than a single manual slot. It includes a 250-sheet cassette and a fifty-sheet multipurpose tray, providing 300 ordinary sheets. The deciding tradeoff is that automatic two-sided output and included networking are absent from the assessed configuration. Two-sided work requires manual reloading, while Ethernet needs an optional print server.

The exact US page marks the model discontinued and no longer updated. Its original guide distinguishes the HL-5050 from the simpler HL-5040 and network-equipped HL-5070N. It is a dedicated printer without scanning, copying or fax hardware.

Its controller does not make Ethernet standard

Sixteen megabytes of memory, PCL6 and BR-Script 3 are positively documented for the HL-5050. The actual options chapter explains expansion to a total of 144 megabytes with added memory. That optional upgrade is different from the included controller configuration.

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel are the standard computer interfaces. The applicable optional print servers provide separate networking arrangements. The HL-5070N’s built-in 10/100 interface in the adjacent column should not be carried into an HL-5050 assessment.

Check the intended computer, driver and actual printer queue before depending on this earlier hardware. Its dated native software list is not a promise of universal present-day compatibility. No built-in wireless, Wi-Fi Direct or mobile protocol is established from the read operating sources.

Make the two included feeds work for the job

The cassette and multipurpose ranges both accommodate ordinary Letter, Legal and A4. Their 250-plus-fifty capacity uses the stated paper-weight basis. A separate optional 250-sheet lower cassette is not included, so an expanded family maximum should not replace the standard 300-sheet figure.

The multipurpose tray is a genuine stack feed, unlike the one-sheet manual slot on the HL-5040. Select the corresponding source and paper settings, fan and align the stack, and keep it below the guides’ maximum height. The printer’s feed behavior depends on those settings and the actual media, not just the nominal size.

For suitable envelopes, the original uses the multipurpose tray and rear output path. It limits a load to three envelopes, with the appropriate envelope media selection and guide adjustment. Its separate rear face-up output arrangement also means the cabinet needs working space behind it. The fifty-sheet ordinary-paper capacity is not an envelope capacity.

Manual duplex is driver-dependent work

The PCL routine prints even-numbered pages first and then prompts the user to reinsert the stack for the odd-numbered pages. The guide explains cassette and multipurpose reloading separately. Straightening the stack and following the specified orientation are part of finishing the document.

The PS driver does not support this manual-duplex feature. Neither BR-Script support nor a duplex setting in a shared software section establishes automatic duplex hardware. A documented automatic-duplex printer is a more suitable comparison when an unattended batch matters.

The declared engine rate is up to seventeen one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately from sixteen A4 pages per minute. It does not describe the throughput of a manually completed two-sided document. Job Spooling is also separate: it permits Go-button reprinting and does not establish protected PIN collection.

Supplies and weight retain their source conditions

The standard-toner declarations conflict at approximately 3,000 pages on the exact web page and 3,300 in the original, both using five-percent Letter/A4 coverage. That difference remains unresolved. Both give approximately 6,500 high-yield toner pages and a separate approximately 20,000-page drum declaration at one page per job. Inbox yield remains unknown.

The original’s 25.6-pound figure explicitly includes drum and toner, so it is used instead of the unqualified 25.4-pound web figure. Body dimensions are approximately 15.0 inches wide, 15.8 deep and 9.9 high. The USA/Canada operating branch specifies 110–120 V AC. Allow feed and maintenance clearance, and compare an included-network model when direct sharing is essential.

Computer and mobile connections

16 MB standard; exact option chapter permits 144 MB total with added memory. PCL6/BR-Script 3. Standard USB/parallel; networking needs an optional applicable print server. No 5070N Ethernet hardware borrowed. PS driver does not support the documented manual-duplex feature.

Supplies and declared yields

Standard-toner conflict: exact web approximately 3,000 versus original 3,300 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage. High yield approximately 6,500; separate drum approximately 20,000 at one page/job. Inbox yield unresolved.
