A useful fit for

Compatible wired setups producing mainly one-sided monochrome documents.

The main tradeoff

No automatic duplex or established PIN release; source discrepancies for standard toner and weight are retained explicitly.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it print Legal monochrome documents through Ethernet with 300 included sheets and a declared 17 Letter ppm?

Yes, with a compatible native driver. The exact model includes Ethernet, a 250-sheet cassette and a 50-sheet multipurpose feed.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will it finish a two-sided batch automatically without someone reloading the paper?

No. The documented duplex routine is manual stack refeeding, with driver and media restrictions.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can its ordinary Job Spooling feature satisfy PIN-release printing?

That requirement is not established. The actual routine is Go-button reprinting, and the guide explains disabling reprint to stop others from repeating the output.

A basic network laser with manual two-sided handling

The Brother HL-5070N is a discontinued monochrome laser reference for an established computer arrangement that needs USB or wired Ethernet printing. Its practical advantages are included network hardware and a 300-sheet ordinary-paper input arrangement. The deciding tradeoff is output handling: two-sided documents require someone to reload the stack. There is no automatic duplex unit to finish a batch unattended.

The exact US support page identifies it as discontinued and no longer updated. Its original manual dates from the earlier computer environments listed in that document. Confirm the actual driver and operating system before depending on a surviving machine. Neither its documented engine rate nor an old supported-system list is a promise of compatibility with every present-day computer.

Use the included network branch

The HL-5070N controller column positively identifies Hi-Speed USB 2.0, IEEE 1284 parallel and standard 10/100 Ethernet. Ethernet is therefore included on this model rather than merely offered through an accessory. The optional external print-server references elsewhere in the same guide should not hide that important difference.

Sixteen megabytes of memory and PCL6/BR-Script 3 support are documented. The sources present expansion limits differently, so this assessment relies on the standard memory and does not promise a particular maximum fitted configuration. Check the printer’s actual memory and selected driver when a complex document does not fit.

This is a dedicated monochrome printer. It has no document scanner, copier or fax. A network-print utility or host computer’s scanning software does not create those functions. No built-in wireless, Wi-Fi Direct or mobile print protocol is established by the read operating sources.

Its multipurpose tray is a real additional feed

The included cassette takes up to 250 ordinary sheets, while the multipurpose tray takes another fifty. Both documented ranges accommodate Letter, Legal and A4. The original capacity basis is the stated plain-paper weight, and a separate optional 250-sheet lower cassette is excluded from the included 300-sheet figure.

The multipurpose tray differs from the single-sheet manual feed found on the HL-5030 and HL-5040. Keeping those family columns separate avoids understating this printer’s useful paper handling. Conversely, the ability to add a lower tray should not be mistaken for a tray that was always supplied.

For suitable envelopes, the operating chapter uses the multipurpose feed and rear face-up output path. It limits a load to three envelopes and explains the media setting and guide adjustment. Leave space behind the machine for that route. Envelope construction still matters, so check a sample before committing to a larger batch.

Manual duplex and reprint are different operations

The applicable PCL manual-duplex routine prints the even-numbered pages first. The user then removes them, reloads the stack with the correct blank face and orientation, and continues the odd-numbered pages. The guide gives separate routines for the cassette and this model’s multipurpose tray. It warns about curled, very thin or very thick paper and says the PS driver does not support the manual-duplex feature.

Job Spooling retains data for a Go-button reprint. It is not a documented password-held job waiting for an authorized person to enter a PIN. The original advises disabling reprint if other people should not reprint the document. A PIN-release requirement therefore remains unestablished rather than being inferred from the word spooling.

Resolve the source conditions before comparing numbers

The declared engine rate is up to seventeen one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately from sixteen A4 pages per minute. It does not describe completed two-sided sheets or establish a recommended monthly workload.

The standard-toner declarations disagree: the exact web table says approximately 3,000 Letter/A4 pages, while the original says 3,300, both at five-percent coverage. That difference is preserved rather than silently resolved. Both identify approximately 6,500 for high yield and a separate drum declaration of approximately 20,000 pages at one page per job. Inbox yield is not established.

The original identifies a 25.6-pound weight including drum and toner, while the web table gives 25.4 without that clear basis. The explicit loaded original is used here. Body dimensions are approximately 15.0 inches wide, 15.8 deep and 9.9 high; the USA/Canada power branch specifies 110–120 V AC. A supported automatic-duplex printer is the useful alternative when unattended two-sided output matters.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 17 one-sided Letter / 16 A4 ppm. Two-sided work requires manual stack reloading through supported PCL routine; PS manual-duplex feature is unavailable. No numerical recommended monthly volume established.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette + 50-sheet multipurpose tray. Original uses stated 75 g/m² / 20 lb ordinary-paper capacity; exact web uses 80 g/m². Both support Letter/Legal/A4. Optional 250-sheet lower cassette excluded. Suitable envelopes: up to three through multipurpose feed to rear output.

Computer and mobile connections

Standard Hi-Speed USB 2.0, IEEE 1284 parallel and 10/100 Ethernet. 16 MB standard; PCL6 and BR-Script 3. Expansion maximum conflicts between exact web and shared original; no maximum assigned. Job Spooling is reprint, not established PIN release.

Supplies and declared yields

Standard-toner discrepancy retained: exact web approximately 3,000 versus original 3,300 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage. High yield approximately 6,500 under the same basis. Separate drum approximately 20,000 at one page/job. Inbox yield unresolved.

Electrical edition and setup

Body W 15.0 × D 15.8 × H 9.9 in. Original 25.6 lb explicitly includes drum and toner and is used instead of the web’s 25.4 lb unqualified figure. USA/Canada power branch: 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Allow rear-output and maintenance clearance.
