Brother HL-5140: straightforward legacy USB mono printing review

A basic legacy USB printing role

The Brother HL-5140 is a discontinued monochrome laser printer with USB and parallel interfaces. It suits a compatible legacy desktop making black documents, where a 250-sheet cassette and manual two-sided handling are sufficient. It is print-only, with no scanner, copier or fax hardware. An included network connection or automatic duplex requirement changes the choice.

The exact controller supports PCL6 and starts with sixteen megabytes of memory, expandable to 144 megabytes. Its shared manual also describes HL-5130, HL-5150D and HL-5170DN. Their different memory, emulation, paper-feed and networking columns are not interchangeable. In particular, BR-Script, automatic duplex and the fifty-sheet multipurpose tray are not borrowed into this HL-5140 configuration.

Connections that are actually included

Hi-Speed USB and IEEE 1284 parallel are standard physical interfaces. The NC-2100p network arrangement is optional hardware, so the base model does not satisfy a requirement for included Ethernet. Standard networking on a different family member is not proof that a used or retained HL-5140 has that accessory installed.

The native software examples belong to an earlier operating-system generation. Confirm a usable driver and the application's required controls on the actual computer before relying on the documented printing route. AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct and protected PIN release remain unestablished in the exact readings; a general utility or network-management reference is not substituted for those features.

Single-sheet special media and manual duplex

The ordinary cassette holds 250 sheets on the original 80 g/m² basis, also labeled twenty-one pounds in that guide. It supports Letter, Legal and A4. The separate manual feed accepts one sheet at a time for appropriate envelopes and other instructed media. It is not the larger multipurpose tray fitted to neighboring variants.

The actual two-sided routine prints even pages first, asks the operator to reload them in the specified orientation, then prints odd pages. A separate manual-feed sequence handles sheets individually. The finished document can be two-sided, but the handling is manual. That distinction is why the model fails an automatic duplex requirement.

An extra 250-sheet lower tray is optional. It can change the installed configuration, but the base included capacity remains 250 sheets. When evaluating an earlier unit, check the hardware present rather than relying on a family-level expanded-capacity claim or an accessory appearing in the manual.

Letter speed and coverage-based supplies

The exact US table and original specification state up to twenty-one one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately from twenty at A4. Ready-state first-print time is another measurement. None is a personal timing result. The read exact sources do not establish a numerical recommended monthly volume, so page rate is not used to invent a workload recommendation.

Replacement toner declarations are up to 3,500 standard or 6,700 high-yield A4/Letter pages at five-percent coverage. The separate drum is up to 20,000 A4/Letter pages at one page per job. These older measurement conditions are preserved rather than relabeled as ISO yields. They do not establish supplied-cartridge yield, current running cost or remaining consumable life.

Body and the deciding alternative

The exact model's original body measurements are 15.0 × 15.1 × 9.9 inches, with approximately 23.1 lb including toner and drum. The USA/Canada electrical branch specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Leave room for cassette movement, manual feeding, rear output, cables and maintenance, and verify the actual unit's rating plate.

This remains a narrowly defined legacy printing option. If standard Ethernet, automatic output duplex or document capture is essential, compare an exact model including that function. The shared series name and separately available accessories do not change the included HL-5140 configuration.
