HL-5150DIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

An established compatible local computer that needs ordinary two-sided black-and-white documents.

The main tradeoff

Ethernet needs an optional print server, and historical operating systems do not all support its USB interface.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can an earlier local USB printer automatically duplex A4 with 300 included sheets?

Qualifies with a supported computer and driver. The exact 5150D operating instructions explicitly permit A4 automatic duplex and both included input paths support A4.

Can I require Ethernet as included hardware on the base HL-5150D?

Fails: the exact model needs the optional NC-2100p network server. The neighboring HL-5170DN has a different standard interface arrangement.

Can its 21 ppm speed establish a recommended 3000-page monthly workload?

Fails: the read exact sources do not provide a numerical recommended monthly maximum. The engine speed cannot supply that missing recommendation.

A local monochrome printer with duplex hardware

The Brother HL-5150D fits an established computer setup that needs black-and-white documents and automatic two-sided printing. It includes a 250-sheet cassette and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, with USB and parallel connections. The practical tradeoff is that independent office-network sharing requires a separate optional print server.

Read the exact model column when comparing related printers. The HL-5150D has the documented duplex unit and multipurpose tray, while other family members differ. Standard Ethernet belongs to HL-5170DN. A shared manual title does not make every listed interface standard on this local model.

Follow the actual automatic-duplex setup

The original operating guide positively supports automatic A4, Letter and Legal printing on suitable plain paper. It tells the user to set the lever on the duplex tray for the chosen paper size, load the paper and select the actual duplex tray in the compatible driver. This is a hardware-backed routine, rather than a manual process that asks the user to turn output sheets over.

The USA specification gives an additional face-down output and paper-weight restriction for automatic duplex. Use the supported ordinary stock and correct lever position. A thicker sheet accepted by the MP tray does not automatically qualify for two-sided handling, and envelope feeding is not a promise of automatic two-sided envelopes.

The included 250-plus-50 arrangement uses the maker’s 80 g/m² paper basis, labeled 21 lb in this original guide. Letter, Legal and A4 fit both documented paths. A separately purchased 250-sheet lower tray expands capacity, but it is not counted in the 300-sheet base configuration.

Check the connection and driver together

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 provides the supported local computer connection. IEEE 1284 parallel is a separate legacy interface that may matter in an existing installation, provided the computer, cable and application are compatible. Neither connector by itself establishes an independent network printing arrangement.

The optional NC-2100p server supplies the documented Ethernet addition. Verify its presence and compatibility if a surviving package claims network support. No built-in Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint or Mopria arrangement is established for the reviewed base printer.

The historical software list includes older Windows versions, Mac OS 8.6–9.2 and early OS X, with the stated driver distinctions. The original guide specifically excludes USB support under Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. Thus, appearing in a general driver list does not mean that every listed operating system supports every physical connection. Check exact current downloads before changing the computer.

Keep speed and workload claims separate

The exact manufacturer table declares up to 21 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 20 A4 pages per minute. Automatic duplex is separately 9 sides per minute, or 4.5 physical sheets per minute. These are Brother’s declarations, not our own timed measurements, and document complexity can affect actual output.

The read surviving sources do not establish a numerical recommended monthly maximum. A print rate or loaded-paper total cannot fill that gap. If a stated workload recommendation is essential, choose a documented alternative whose recommendation covers the intended ongoing volume.

This is a dedicated printer. It does not provide a flatbed, document feeder, copying, scanning or fax hardware. A separate scanner attached to the same computer remains a separate device and should not be treated as a function of the printer’s USB port.

Inspect the older physical package

The original guide lists standard and high-yield toner around 3500 and 6700 A4 or Letter pages at 5% coverage, with a separate drum whose declared life uses one page per job. Those older measurement conditions should not be replaced with an invented ISO basis. They also do not establish remaining supplies or a current cost per page.

The USA/Canada supply is 110–120 V AC at 50/60 Hz. The exact body measures 15 × 15.8 × 9.9 in. and weighs 26.2 lb including toner and drum. Leave the documented ventilation gap and access for media and servicing. Brother marks HL-5150D discontinued, so choose it as an earlier reference for a deliberately compatible local workflow.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 21 one-sided Letter ppm or 20 A4 ppm. Automatic duplex separately 9 sides/minute, 4.5 sheets/minute. The footnote limits that duplex routine to supported A4/Letter/Legal paper and face-down output.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray on the maker’s 80 g/m² paper basis; the original guide labels that basis 21 lb. Both paths support Letter/Legal/A4. Optional lower tray adds 250, not included.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact included interfaces are Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel. NC-2100p Ethernet is optional; the different HL-5170DN has standard networking. No built-in Wi-Fi or mobile network protocol is established.

Supplies and declared yields

Original guide declares standard/high-yield toner around 3500/6700 A4 or Letter pages at 5% coverage and a separate drum around 20000 at one page per job. These are historical maker declarations, not ISO substitutions or remaining-life estimates.

Electrical edition and setup

USA/Canada guide specifies AC 110–120 V, 50/60 Hz and roughly 4 in. ventilation clearance. Actual 5150D body is 15 x 15.8 x 9.9 in., 26.2 lb including toner and drum; allow paper and service access.
