Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can this earlier Ethernet package automatically duplex A4 with 550 included sheets?
Qualifies: the exact DNT brochure includes the second cassette, and its actual USA/Canada operating guide explicitly supports A4 automatic duplex and A4 in all included input paths.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I require built-in wireless networking from HL-5250DNT?
Fails: the documented DNT interfaces are Ethernet, USB and parallel. Wireless belongs to the different HL-5280DW.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its quoted 800-sheet maximum satisfy an 800-sheet included requirement?
Fails: DNT includes 550 sheets. Reaching 800 requires another optional 250-sheet lower tray.
Explore this need in the finder →The DNT includes another cassette
The Brother HL-5250DNT is an earlier monochrome laser package for an established office printing routine. Its exact distinction is an additional included 250-sheet lower cassette. Together with the 250-sheet main tray and 50-sheet multipurpose tray, that produces a 550-sheet normal-paper arrangement.
This can be useful when two appropriate stocks must stay loaded, or when the same ordinary paper should last longer between refills. Check the actual assembled package: an older listing for the base HL-5250DN does not establish that the lower cassette is present. The T configuration is identified explicitly in Brother’s original series brochure.
This USA guide actually supports A4 duplex
The original USA/Canada operating guide lists A4, Letter and Legal in the automatic-duplex path and repeats those sizes in its duplex operating instructions. It also supports those ordinary sizes in the main and lower cassettes and the multipurpose path. That supports the included 550-sheet size-specific configuration for these pages.
Use the actual guide rather than importing a later Brother model’s regional duplex restriction. Conversely, a paper size fitting an input tray is not automatically enough on its own; here, the separate automatic-duplex instructions positively confirm the routine. The guide calls for suitable regular paper, a correctly installed duplex tray and a closed rear cover.
Envelopes use the documented multipurpose routine and are expressly excluded from duplex printing. Media type and weight still matter, and heavier or unusual stock should not inherit the ordinary plain-paper capacity. An additional lower tray can raise the configuration to 800 sheets, but that further expansion is optional.
Wired networking and legacy interfaces
The exact DNT configuration has 10/100 Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel. Ethernet provides the documented shared office connection; USB supports a compatible local computer. Parallel may remain useful in an established legacy installation, provided the actual port, cable and application are suitable.
The original brochure assigns wireless to the different HL-5280DW. Its extra display and named security functions cannot be imported into HL-5250DNT simply because both appear in the same brochure. No AirPrint, Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct arrangement is established for this reviewed package.
The contemporary drivers name historical Windows versions, Mac OS 9 and early OS X, and specified Linux arrangements. That is evidence for the original environment, not a guarantee for every present operating system. Verify the exact driver and the application’s required print settings before replacing a working legacy unit.
Paper capacity does not define workload
The exact USA family specification declares up to 30 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 28 A4 pages per minute. The original brochure separately gives up to 13 sides per minute for duplex. These manufacturer figures describe different routines and are not our own measured print results.
The read exact sources do not establish a recommended monthly maximum. A large included paper arrangement or an engine speed cannot supply that missing recommendation. If a numerical monthly recommendation is essential, choose a printer with positive documentation for the intended workload.
The brochure lists TN550 and TN580 replacement toner around 3500 and 7000 pages at its stated 5% Letter coverage basis, plus a separate DR520 drum. Those historical supply declarations are not interchangeable with a different ISO test claim, and they do not establish the cartridge supplied in a surviving package or its remaining life.
Measure the assembled T package
The exact DNT line in the original brochure gives 14.6 × 15.1 × 13.7 in. and 26.8 lb. The shorter 9.7-inch base DN height would understate the assembled package. Leave additional room for cables, ventilation, loading and maintenance rather than fitting the closed body tightly into a shelf.
The reviewed USA/Canada electrical arrangement is 110–120 V at 50/60 Hz. Choose this earlier reference for its documented two-cassette wired workflow and actual A4/Letter/Legal duplex support, after checking condition and software. A current network model or true multifunction printer is the appropriate alternative when modern protocol support or scanning is essential.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact USA family table declares up to 30 one-sided Letter ppm versus 28 A4 ppm. Original brochure separately lists up to 13 duplex sides/minute; that is not 30 duplex sheets/minute.
Paper handling
Exact DNT brochure includes an additional 250-sheet lower tray: 250 main + 250 lower + 50 MP = 550 sheets on the maker’s plain-paper basis. Original USA/Canada operating guide expressly supports automatic A4/Letter/Legal duplex.
Computer and mobile connections
DNT has USB, IEEE 1284 parallel and 10/100 Ethernet. The original brochure assigns wireless and its additional control/security features to HL-5280DW; they are not borrowed.
Supplies and declared yields
Original brochure lists TN550/TN580 replacements around 3500/7000 pages at 5% Letter coverage, with separate DR520 drum. These pre-ISO coverage declarations are not a current cost or verified supplied starter yield.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact DNT original brochure: 14.6 x 15.1 x 13.7 in., 26.8 lb; base DN is shorter. USA/Canada guide specifies 110–120 V, 50/60 Hz and about 4 in. ventilation clearance.
