HL-5280DWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

An established desktop workflow needing shared monochrome output and a separate multipurpose feed.

The main tradeoff

Legacy driver and wireless compatibility require checking; there is no scanner, copier or fax.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it print Legal documents automatically on both sides over Ethernet with 300 sheets loaded?

Yes. The included 250-sheet cassette and 50-sheet multipurpose tray support Legal, and the documented desktop duplex routine includes Legal.

Will its wireless connection also scan my paper documents?

No. This is a dedicated printer without scanner hardware.

Does the standard printer provide 550 sheets of input?

No. Standard input is 300 sheets. A lower tray is an optional addition.

Shared monochrome printing with an older wireless platform

The Brother HL-5280DW suits an existing office that needs a dedicated monochrome printer with several ways to connect. Its useful combination is ordinary Wi-Fi, wired networking and automatic two-sided output in the same model. The deciding tradeoff is its age: Brother marks it discontinued, and a surviving specification page cannot establish compatibility with a new computer or a modern wireless security policy. Confirm the actual driver and network arrangement before treating the printer as usable equipment.

This is a print-only machine. A document that must be copied, scanned or faxed needs separate equipment. That distinction matters when a support page offers an application with “Print/Scan” in its name; software naming does not add a scanner to the chassis. The HL-5280DW should be assessed for the printing work it actually performs.

Choose the connection before planning the job

The included interfaces are USB, parallel, Fast Ethernet and 802.11b/g wireless LAN. Ethernet offers a practical alternative when the available wireless network cannot accommodate this older radio. USB can serve a nearby computer, while the parallel connection is relevant to established legacy installations. Neither an Ethernet port nor a working wireless association guarantees that every current operating system has a suitable printer driver.

The printer supports PCL6 and Brother’s BR-Script emulation. Check the driver’s available controls using an ordinary document before depending on a particular finishing or confidentiality setting. Keeping an older printer useful involves more than finding a cable that fits: the application, operating system, driver and selected printer queue all need to agree.

Paper handling that separates daily stock from occasional media

The standard arrangement combines a 250-sheet cassette with a 50-sheet multipurpose tray. Those are included capacities; additional lower trays are optional. The second feed is helpful when the main cassette should remain loaded with everyday paper while occasional envelopes or other permitted media need their own settings. It also requires the correct media type and size in the application and driver, rather than simply forcing an unusual sheet through the normal paper routine.

Automatic duplex printing covers Letter, Legal and A4 plain or recycled paper within Brother’s specified weight range. Envelopes have a separate feed routine and must not be sent through automatic duplex. The US specification rates one-sided output at up to 30 Letter pages per minute and 28 A4 pages per minute. Its two-sided figure is 13 printed sides, or 6.5 sheets, per minute. Those units describe different work and should not be interchanged when estimating a batch.

Password release needs deliberate memory setup

Secure printing holds a job until its password is supplied at the printer or through the documented web management routine. The operating guide requires a nonzero RAM-disk allocation; the default allocation is zero. Allocating memory to held jobs leaves less working memory for printing, so a queue of complex confidential documents deserves particular attention. Brother recommends additional memory for substantial secure-job storage rather than making it an automatic prerequisite for every small job.

Held data is deleted after printing and RAM contents disappear when power is removed. This is a short-term release workflow, not a document archive. Confirm that the chosen desktop driver exposes the required job-spooling setting instead of assuming any generic printing path provides the same controls.

Supplies, placement and the sensible comparison

Brother lists replacement toner ratings of approximately 3,500 or 7,000 Letter/A4 pages at five percent coverage and a separate drum rating of approximately 25,000 pages at one page per job. These are declared conditions, not remaining life in an individual cartridge. Review toner and drum condition separately when assessing an existing unit.

The body measures 15.5 inches wide, 15.1 deep and 10.2 high. Leave space for feed access and maintenance. A newer monochrome printer with explicitly supported drivers is the useful comparison when software or wireless compatibility is uncertain; a multifunction model becomes relevant when the missing scanner is part of the actual job.
