Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can an earlier USB monochrome printer duplex Legal with 300 included sheets?
Qualifies on the supported local computer arrangement. The exact US media table includes Legal automatic duplex and both included input paths.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I require wired Ethernet from HL-5440D?
Fails: Ethernet is assigned to HL-5450DN in the shared table. HL-5440D provides USB and parallel.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its 40 ppm speed establish a 3000-page recommended monthly workload?
Fails: the actual sources read here do not state a recommended monthly maximum. Print rate is not a substitute.
Explore this need in the finder →A local printer with an important suffix distinction
The Brother HL-5440D suits an established local printing setup that needs monochrome documents and automatic two-sided output. It includes a 250-sheet cassette and 50-sheet multipurpose tray. Its distinctive connection is the combination of USB2.0 and an IEEE1284 parallel interface, rather than a built-in office network connection.
The shared HL-5440D/HL-5450DN specification must be read by column. Ethernet belongs to HL-5450DN; HL-5440D has parallel instead. A supported USB computer can use this printer locally, but a wired-network requirement cannot be met by borrowing the neighboring model's interface.
Check the older computer workflow
The original brochure describes parallel support for legacy DOS printing as well as USB connectivity. Parallel is a real documented function, though this finder's computer-connection choices concentrate on USB and network routes. A computer still needs the appropriate physical port, cable and compatible printing software; the existence of a parallel socket is not a universal DOS application guarantee.
The contemporary OS list includes Windows 7, Vista, XP and specified Server editions, Mac OS X10.5.8 through 10.7, and Linux. Those historical references are useful for an existing installation. They do not establish current driver support for every later system. Verify the exact driver and required application features before replacing a working legacy printer with an unfamiliar used unit.
What 300 included sheets actually means
The main tray holds up to 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper. The multipurpose tray adds 50 sheets on the same plain-paper basis. Their documented size lists cover Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary pages. Together, they form the 300-sheet included configuration; an optional 500-sheet lower tray is a separate purchase.
The multipurpose path accepts suitable envelopes, labels and heavier paper under its own 16–43 lb weight range. The normal tray and automatic-duplex range are 16–28 lb. A heavier stock that fits the multipurpose path is not automatically a supported two-sided medium. Check the actual type, weight and driver settings for the job.
For the reviewed US configuration, the duplex size list includes Letter and Legal. A4 appears as a simplex input size, but the exact US duplex-media table does not list it. A separate duplex-speed line mentioning A4 does not override that explicit regional media restriction when choosing a required paper size.
Print speed is not a workload recommendation
The exact model table declares up to 40 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 38 A4 pages per minute. The separate automatic-duplex figure is 18 sides per minute, or 9 sheets per minute. Those manufacturer figures describe different routines and do not represent our own timed print tests.
The actual sources read for this reference do not establish a recommended monthly print maximum. A fast engine cannot supply that missing recommendation, and generic duty-cycle explanatory text on the surviving page is not a numerical workload limit. If a stated monthly recommendation is essential, seek an exact source that gives it or choose a documented alternative.
Earlier hardware needs supply and package checks
The original brochure lists TN720 standard toner at approximately 3000 pages, TN750 high-yield toner at 8000 pages, and the DR720 drum as a separate item. These are declared replacement-supply figures, not proof of what a used package contains. A toner page yield does not establish the remaining drum life or a current cost per page.
The body measures 14.6 ×15.1 ×9.6 in and weighs 22.9 lb with consumables in the HL-5440D column. The different 23.1 lb figure in the paired table belongs to HL-5450DN. Allow extra room for the rear path, cables and tray access rather than fitting the closed body tightly into a shelf.
Brother marks HL-5440D discontinued. Choose it as an earlier reference when the exact local USB or parallel routine remains useful. For built-in Ethernet, wireless sharing, copying or scanning, select hardware whose own specification confirms those functions. The shared manual title alone cannot add them to this printer.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker maximum 40 one-sided Letter ppm or 38 A4 ppm. Automatic duplex is separately 18 sides/minute, 9 sheets/minute; regional paper-size restrictions still apply.
Paper handling
Included 250-sheet main tray plus 50-sheet multipurpose tray at 20 lb plain paper. Letter/Legal/A4 simplex; US duplex Letter/Legal. The 500-sheet lower tray is optional.
Computer and mobile connections
HL-5440D has USB and IEEE1284 parallel. The shared table assigns 10/100 Ethernet to HL-5450DN only. No included Wi-Fi arrangement is established.
Supplies and declared yields
The original brochure lists TN720 replacement toner at 3,000 pages, TN750 at 8,000 pages, and a separate DR720 drum. These do not establish an included starter-toner yield.
Software and support
The contemporary reference names Windows 7/Vista/XP/Server 2003/2008, Mac OS X 10.5.8/10.6/10.7 and Linux. This is historical compatibility, not a promise for every new OS.
