HL-5450DNIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Compatible wired offices needing Letter or Legal automatic two-sided documents.

The main tradeoff

No built-in wireless route established; US automatic-duplex size restrictions are narrower than the ordinary feed list.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it automatically duplex Legal documents on Ethernet with 300 included sheets?

Yes, through a compatible native driver and the instructed USA/CAN paper routine. Both included feeds support Legal; the optional lower tray is not counted.

Does ordinary A4 feeding establish automatic A4 duplex in this US configuration?

No. The actual USA/CAN duplex paper table lists Letter, Legal and Folio. A4 is retained as ordinary printing support only.

Can I connect the printer itself to my Wi-Fi network without Ethernet?

That route is not established. Its included interfaces are USB and wired Ethernet; AirPrint through a wireless router does not add a radio to the printer.

A wired monochrome printer for ordinary office documents

The Brother HL-5450DN is an earlier monochrome laser reference for a compatible desktop or wired office network. It combines automatic two-sided output with 300 sheets of included ordinary-paper input and a declared forty one-sided Letter pages per minute. The useful distinction is its wired connection arrangement: the printer includes Ethernet and USB, while built-in Wi-Fi is not established for this model. Brother’s replacement chart identifies it as discontinued, so it belongs in an earlier-model comparison.

This is a dedicated printer. There is no scanner, copier or fax unit to make document capture part of the setup. Sixty-four megabytes of memory are standard, with an expansion slot documented for the HL-5450DN. The neighboring HL-5440D has a different expansion and interface arrangement, despite sharing the main operating guide.

Choose the actual computer or mobile route

A compatible native printer driver can use Hi-Speed USB 2.0 locally or the included 10/100 Ethernet interface on a network. The parallel connection in the shared specification belongs to the HL-5440D alone. It should not be added to an HL-5450DN connection checklist. Check the intended operating system and exact driver before relying on a dated printer in a new computer arrangement.

The exact HL-5450DN support index also supplies an AirPrint guide. Its wired-network drawing shows the printer attached by network cable to a suitable wireless router, with the Apple device on that network. That arrangement supports mobile printing without giving the printer its own wireless radio. Generic sections about supported wireless or Wi-Fi Direct models do not establish those physical modes on this machine.

Keep mobile and native-driver expectations separate. The AirPrint instructions make available print options dependent on the application. A desktop driver’s paper, envelope or management control therefore should not automatically be promised in every Apple application.

Paper capacity and duplex sizes have separate limits

The included input consists of a 250-sheet cassette and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, based on the guide’s stated plain-paper weight. Both can handle ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 sheets within their documented ranges. The optional 500-sheet lower tray is an addition, not part of the normal 300-sheet capacity.

For automatic duplex, the USA/CAN operating table specifies Letter, Legal and Folio, using suitable plain, thin or recycled paper. A4 appears in the ordinary feed list but not in that regional automatic-duplex paper list. This assessment follows the operating restriction even though a separate family speed row mentions Letter or A4 duplex. A selected document size must fit the actual regional routine.

Use the multipurpose route and the prescribed media settings for envelopes. Special-media feeding is a separate operation from ordinary two-sided printing. Leave working room around the feed and output paths instead of treating the closed cabinet dimensions as the entire space requirement.

Speed and access controls need the right interpretation

The original separates up to forty one-sided Letter pages per minute from thirty-eight A4 pages per minute. It declares duplex output at eighteen printed sides, or nine completed sheets, per minute. These are manufacturer conditions, not measurements from a hands-on test, and document content can change the result.

The guide documents Secure Function Lock 2.0 for controlling public printing and user access. That administrative feature is not sufficient evidence of a held print job released by its own PIN. Per-job PIN release remains unestablished here. Likewise, no recommended monthly page range is inferred from engine speed.

Supplies and placement complete the comparison

The original lists approximately 3,000 pages of included toner, a TN-720 replacement at approximately 3,000 and TN-750 at approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate DR-720 drum has an approximate 30,000-page declaration at one page per job. These figures distinguish the supplied cartridge from replacements and do not describe remaining life in a particular machine.

The body measures approximately 14.6 inches wide, 15.1 deep and 9.6 high, weighing 23.1 pounds with consumables. The USA/CAN guide specifies 110–120 V AC. For regular scanning or a direct wireless installation, compare a documented multifunction or wireless model whose exact operating arrangement meets those needs.

Paper handling

300 included sheets: 250 cassette + 50 multipurpose, stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain paper. Optional 500-sheet lower tray excluded. USA/CAN automatic duplex: Letter, Legal and Folio; ordinary A4 support does not add A4 to that duplex list.

Computer and mobile connections

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet. Parallel is HL-5440D only. 64 MB standard memory with HL-5450DN expansion slot. AirPrint uses the documented shared-network arrangement; no built-in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct assigned.

Supplies and declared yields

Included toner approximately 3,000 pages. TN-720 approximately 3,000 / TN-750 approximately 8,000 Letter/A4 pages, ISO/IEC 19752. DR-720 approximately 30,000 at one page per job.

Electrical edition and setup

USA/CAN original: 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Body W 14.6 × D 15.1 × H 9.6 in.; 23.1 lb with consumables. Secure Function Lock access control does not establish per-job PIN release.
