Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can native Ethernet provide protected mono Legal duplex,550 included Legal sheets and 42 one-sided Letter ppm?
Qualifies with compatible native software and suitable paper. Exact included capacity is 550; the lower 500-sheet tray is optional on this ordinary DW.

Fails: standard input is 550 sheets. The additional lower 500 is optional; DWT package inclusion is not transferred.

Fails: this is a dedicated printer without scanner hardware.

The Brother HL-6180DW is a discontinued dedicated monochrome laser printer for a compatible workgroup needing black duplex documents and shared wired or wireless output. It includes a 500-sheet cassette and fifty-sheet multipurpose tray. The additional lower cassette is optional on this ordinary DW, so its included capacity differs from HL-6180DWT.
The original US product description and brochure establish that configuration, despite contradictory generic table entries for 250-sheet input, no duplex and four toner cartridges. The actual operating manual confirms the ordinary DW model column. This is a single-black-toner printer without scanner, copier or telephone fax; a print-and-scan application name does not add those functions.
550 included sheets with a separate envelope routine
The cassette and multipurpose tray total 550 sheets on the stated 20 lb paper basis. Both support Letter, Legal and A4. An optional LT-5400 adds another 500 sheets, but its capacity is excluded from the base configuration. A pictured lower cassette or the T model’s packaging should not be counted without verifying the actual unit.
Appropriate envelopes use the instructed multipurpose routine and output path rather than every ordinary-paper setting. The original automatic output-duplex list includes Letter, Legal and Folio. A broader multi-model FAQ also names A4, but that wording is retained as a source difference rather than used to enlarge the exact regional operating list.
Native automatic duplex and protected release
The Windows native duplex routine selects the actual paper size, media, source and Duplex/Booklet arrangement. The BR-Script routine uses its separate print-on-both-sides controls. Suitable straightened stock and the instructed paper path matter; a driver option is not permission to duplex any material that fits the input tray.
Native Secure Print sends a password-protected document for later control-panel release. The operator selects the user and job, enters the password and chooses the copies. Secure data clears after one printing or when power is turned off. Full stored-job space can cause an Out of Memory message. This routine differs from ordinary reprinting and from function-access restrictions, even though those features appear nearby in the manual.
Gigabit, Wi-Fi and separate mobile printing
Hi-Speed USB, Gigabit Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi are included. The exact ordinary model has 128 megabytes and a one-line display. Gigabit operation also needs suitable cables and network equipment; the original distinguishes this interface from the Fast Ethernet controller in HL-5470DW. A connector alone does not establish matching network speed. A separately purchased memory module can enlarge available memory; historical driver and operating-system restrictions still need checking for the intended computer.
AirPrint and Wi-Fi Direct are positively listed, but they are separate print arrangements. Their presence does not establish the native document-password workflow or every exact-size duplex option. The original also names older cloud services; those names are not promises that a retired service remains available. No Mopria capability is inferred from a neighboring generation.
Replacement toner is different from supplied toner
The actual original table declares approximately 3,000 pages of included toner across the four covered models. TN-720, TN-750 and TN-780 replacements have different ISO/IEC 19752 yields; the 12,000-page TN-780 applies to the HL-6180 variants. The separate DR-720 drum declaration assumes one page per job and does not reveal remaining life.
One-sided output is declared up to forty-two Letter pages per minute, separately from forty A4 pages and eighteen duplex sides per minute. These are manufacturer figures, not personal measurements. No recurring monthly recommendation is inferred. The loaded body is 14.6 × 15.1 × 11.3 inches and 25.4 lb, with US 110–120 VAC requirements. Allow paper-path and maintenance access; scanning essentials require a different device.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact ordinary HL-6180DW up to 42 one-sided Letter ppm or 40 A4 ppm, not HL-5470DW40 Letter. Automatic duplex separately up to 18 sides / 9 sheets per minute; Letter declaration retained without generic A4 size transfer. No monthly recommendation or duty figure is established by the actual brochure/primary.
Paper handling
Included 500-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP at 20 lb / 80 g/m², both Letter/Legal/A4. Optional LT-5400 lower 500 is not included on ordinary DW; T package differs. Exact US automatic output duplex Letter, Legal, Folio. General FAQ also names A4; regional original retained without enlargement. Suitable envelopes use separate MP/back-output routine.
Scanning arrangement
Dedicated mono laser printer without scanner, ADF, copy or fax hardware. A mobile print-and-scan app name does not add capture functions.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard Hi-Speed USB, Gigabit Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; separately documented Wi-Fi Direct and AirPrint. Exact 128 MB, one-line display; optional 256 MB module gives 384 MB total. PCL6/BR-Script 3 and native historical driver distinctions remain. No Mopria assertion from its absence in the older mobile list.
Supplies and declared yields
Original table personally viewed: approximately 3,000-page included toner across all four models. TN-720 replacement approximately 3,000, TN-750 approximately 8,000, and TN-780 approximately 12,000 only 6180 variants, under ISO/IEC 19752 Letter/A4 conditions. DR-720 separate drum approximately 30,000 pages at one page per job. No current cost or remaining life inferred.
Software and support
Native Secure Print sends protected documents and releases selected user/job with its password at the panel. Stored secure data clears after printing once or power-off; full storage can produce Out of Memory. Ordinary reprint and Secure Function Lock differ from document release. AirPrint/peer routines do not inherit native PIN or exact-size duplex settings.
Electrical edition and setup
USA/CAN original 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Actual viewed ordinary DW body 14.6 × 15.1 × 11.3 in., 25.4 lb with consumables, excluding DWT’s taller body and 32.2 lb loaded package. Allow cassette, MP, rear-output, cable and service clearance; confirm usable native software and any actually installed optional lower tray.
