HL-6180DWTIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible office needing two loaded paper stocks, native protected-document release and substantial included monochrome input capacity.

The main tradeoff

The complete T configuration is 16.5 inches high and 32.2 lb with supplies; 12,000-page toner is a replacement option rather than the inbox cartridge.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can compatible Ethernet printing provide monochrome Legal duplex, four-digit release and 1,050 included sheets at a 42 Letter ppm requirement?

Qualifies with a compatible native Windows driver and suitable paper. Exact T input includes both 500-sheet cassettes plus the MP tray, and the US original establishes Legal automatic duplex. The 42 ppm figure is one-sided Letter output.

Can the same machine print color charts?

Fails: this is a monochrome print engine. Wireless connections and a large paper supply do not add color toner output.

Will the complete T configuration fit under a strict 12-inch height limit?

Fails: the exact T model is 16.5 inches high before operating clearance. The shorter ordinary HL-6180DW is a different supplied configuration.

Two paper cassettes are part of the supplied machine

The Brother HL-6180DWT is an earlier monochrome laser printer with two included 500-sheet paper cassettes and a 50-sheet multipurpose input. Its 1,050-sheet standard capacity is the central reason to consider this exact suffix: the second cassette is part of the T configuration, rather than an accessory silently added to an ordinary HL-6180DW.

This arrangement suits a compatible office that regularly switches between two stocks or sizes, or wants a larger loaded supply for black documents. It remains print-only. The original guide specifically distinguishes the HL family from scanning devices, so neither the network interface nor the name of a Brother phone application supplies a scanner, copier or fax.

Capacity depends on the actual media path

The declared standard total uses the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain-paper basis. Both cassettes accept ordinary Letter, Legal and A4, with fifty more appropriate sheets in the MP input. The MP path also supports suitable envelopes, which have their own handling requirements. A fifty-sheet plain-paper rating should not be treated as fifty envelopes of any construction.

In the US operating edition, automatic two-sided printing accepts Letter, Legal and Folio. The automatic operation selects a suitable source, binding and plain, recycled or thin paper; it specifically excludes bond paper from that routine. A4 ordinary input and an A4 duplex-speed label elsewhere in the specifications do not override this precise regional media list.

Use the output rate for the intended mode

Brother rates one-sided output up to 42 Letter or 40 A4 pages per minute. Automatic Letter duplex is separately up to eighteen printed sides, or nine physical sheets, per minute. The simplex headline therefore does not describe forty-two completed two-sided sheets. These are source specifications rather than timing results from a personal test.

The large included paper supply is also not a recurring monthly recommendation. The exact product and brochure material read for this assessment does not establish a numerical recommended monthly range or maximum duty figure. Those fields stay unknown instead of receiving a figure from a nearby model or from an unqualified description of heavy office use.

A specific protected-document routine

Hi-Speed USB, Gigabit Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi are included. A compatible native Windows driver can send a protected document that waits for its four-digit password at the control panel. The operator selects the user and job, enters the password and releases the required copies. Stored secure data is deleted after printing and also when the machine is switched off.

AirPrint and Wi-Fi Direct are separately documented in the exact product material. They provide other printing arrangements, with their own network or peer setup. Native protected release is not promised in every mobile application, and Mopria is not inferred from the existence of wireless networking. Check usable software for the intended computer rather than treating an original operating-system list as a promise for later systems.

The high-yield replacement is not the starter toner

The original four-model supply table declares approximately 3,000 inbox toner pages. TN-720 replacement toner is approximately 3,000 pages, TN-750 approximately 8,000 and the HL-6180-specific TN-780 approximately 12,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate DR-720 drum is approximately 30,000 pages at one page per job under its conditions. None of those declarations establishes current running cost or remaining life in a particular unit.

The complete T body measures 14.6 × 15.1 × 16.5 inches and weighs 32.2 lb with consumables. Its extra cassette changes both height and weight from the ordinary model. The US original specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Allow tray, MP, rear-output, cable and service access beyond the closed cabinet when deciding whether this substantial paper configuration fits the workspace.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 42 one-sided Letter or 40 A4 ppm. Letter automatic duplex is separately up to 18 sides / 9 sheets per minute. No numeric recommended monthly volume or maximum duty is established in the exact sources read here.

Paper handling

Two included 500-sheet cassettes plus 50-sheet MP input provide 1,050 standard sheets on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain-paper basis for Letter, Legal and A4. Tray 2 is standard on exact HL-6180DWT. US automatic duplex is Letter, Legal and Folio; accepted ordinary A4 does not establish US A4 duplex.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; exact product/brochure also document AirPrint and Wi-Fi Direct. Native Secure Print uses four-digit document release at the panel; general network security and phone printing are separate. Mopria remains unestablished. This model has no scanner, copier or fax.

Supplies and declared yields

Original exact-model table declares approximately 3,000 inbox toner pages. TN-720 replacement approximately 3,000, TN-750 approximately 8,000 and exact HL-6180-family TN-780 approximately 12,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. Separate DR-720 drum approximately 30,000 pages at one page per job under its stated conditions.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US T body 14.6 × 15.1 × 16.5 in. and 32.2 lb with consumables; the ordinary HL-6180DW is shorter and lighter. Original specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Leave cassette-loading, MP, rear-path, cable and service access; verify usable drivers for the intended computer.
