HL-L3230CDWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A modest-volume office wanting color documents without an integrated scanner.

The main tradeoff

The recommended maximum is 1500 pages per month, and its one-sheet special-media path is not another full tray.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can an earlier Wi-Fi color printer duplex Letter with 250 included sheets and Mopria support?

Qualifies in the documented infrastructure wireless arrangement. This toner-based model uses LED imaging and supports the selected Letter duplex routine.

Can I require 2000 pages per month within the recommended workload?

Fails: Brother’s recommended monthly maximum is 1500 pages. The separate 30000-page maximum duty cycle does not substitute for that recommendation.

Does color printing mean it can scan color originals?

Fails: HL-L3230CDW is print-only. Its color toner engine and network connectivity do not provide scanner hardware.

Color toner output with an LED engine

The Brother HL-L3230CDW fits a modest-volume office that wants color documents from a dedicated printer. It has a 250-sheet cassette, automatic two-sided output and both wired and wireless networking. The useful tradeoff is a complete color-printing arrangement without an integrated scanner or the larger multifunction workflow.

Brother calls this a digital-color printer, and its actual USA operating guide identifies electrophotographic LED imaging. It is a toner-based laser-class machine, but we do not describe it as using a laser beam. This distinction does not create a tested quality advantage; no hands-on output comparison is claimed here.

The exact CDW column matters

The shared manual covers several related models with materially different capabilities. HL-L3230CDW has a one-line LCD, a declared 25 one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color, and USB, Ethernet and wireless interfaces. The 2.7-inch color touchscreen and NFC belong to HL-L3270CDW. The slower ratings in other family columns are not this model’s speed.

The model is print-only. A network protocol or software name mentioning scanning does not establish a flatbed or feeder. If the daily job includes copying a paper original or scanning a signed form, choose a genuine multifunction printer whose exact scanner paths support the required original size.

Keep normal paper and manual media separate

The included cassette holds up to 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper and explicitly supports Letter, Legal and A4 among its sizes. A one-sheet manual feed provides the documented route for suitable envelopes, labels, glossy paper and other listed stock. That manual opening is useful for occasional special media, but it is not another loaded cassette.

The USA guide’s automatic-duplex list includes Letter, Legal, Folio and the named regional Legal sizes. It does not list A4 for this electrical edition. A4 is supported for ordinary input, and appears in the guide’s separate speed table, but those facts alone do not establish an automatic A4 duplex routine for the reviewed USA configuration.

For supported duplex paper, use the guide’s actual type and weight restrictions. A printer accepting envelopes through a manual slot does not thereby support two-sided envelopes. Paper capacity also depends on the stated plain-paper basis rather than the thickest medium the mechanism can physically accept.

Use the documented network workflow

USB supports local computer printing, while 10/100 Ethernet offers a wired-network route. Built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connects through the wireless network, and Wi-Fi Direct is a separately documented peer option. The exact product lists AirPrint and Mopria; the matching presets keep those positively supported mobile protocols in the infrastructure wireless arrangement.

A USB cable does not supply a network mobile-printing feature by itself. Check the actual computer driver or mobile application for the options needed by the job. The original operating guide’s OS table is a historical compatibility reference, so verify current exact-model downloads before depending on an older unit with a new operating system.

Plan around the recommended volume

Brother’s recommended monthly maximum is 1500 pages. The separate 30000-page duty cycle is a durability comparison, not the suggested normal monthly output. A workplace routinely producing 2000 pages needs a model whose recommended workload covers that demand, even though this printer’s larger duty figure may look reassuring.

The declared one-sided speed is 25 Letter pages per minute or 24 A4 pages per minute, for either black or color. Automatic duplex is separately rated at 8 sides per minute, or 4 sheets per minute. These are manufacturer figures and are not our own timed measurements.

The original package lists starter black and color toner around 1000 pages each, plus a separate DR223CL drum with its own declared life. Those supply figures do not establish present cost per page or remaining life in a used package. The 39.7 lb body measures 16.1 × 18.1 × 9.9 in.; allow extra paper and service access. Brother marks the model discontinued, so choose it as an earlier reference only after checking condition, supplies and software compatibility.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

USA guide gives up to 25 one-sided Letter ppm or 24 A4 ppm in black or color. Duplex is separately 8 sides/minute, 4 sheets/minute, with the actual US duplex-media restriction retained.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette at 20 lb plain-paper basis supports Letter/Legal/A4. One-sheet manual slot accepts specified envelopes and other media. USA automatic duplex lists Letter/Legal/Folio/Mexico Legal/India Legal, not A4.

Computer and mobile connections

USB, 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct are documented for CDW. NFC and the color touchscreen belong to HL-L3270CDW, not this one-line-LCD model.

Supplies and declared yields

Original product package lists black and each color starter toner around 1000 pages, with a separate DR223CL drum around 18000 under the maker’s conditions. No current price or remaining-life claim is made.
