HL-L3290CDWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible small office needing color documents and individual Letter/A4 capture rather than stack feeding or analog fax.

The main tradeoff

No ADF or Ethernet is included, and the scanner glass is shorter than Legal even though Legal print duplex is supported.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can ordinary Wi-Fi provide AirPrint color output, Legal print duplex and Letter color flatbed scanning with 250 sheets at 1,500 pages per month?

Qualifies with compatible desktop scanning alongside separate network mobile printing. Legal output duplex and Letter flatbed capture are distinct supported routines. The recommended monthly maximum reaches 1,500 pages.

Can it feed a loose-sheet stack automatically for scanning?

Fails: HL-L3290CDW has a flatbed without an ADF. Neighboring MFC feeder hardware does not apply to it.

Does it have standard Ethernet for my wired scanner installation?

Fails: the exact included interfaces are USB and Wi-Fi. Its family LAN list excludes HL-L3290CDW.

The HL name does not make this print-only

The Brother HL-L3290CDW combines color printing and copying with color flatbed scanning. Its engine is digital color LED, as the exact brochure and operating guide establish, even though the product category uses familiar laser-printer wording. It is a three-function machine with a two-line monochrome display. The display's lack of color does not limit the actual color print engine.

Its clear fit is a compatible home or small-office desktop needing color documents and individual original capture. There is no document feeder or analog fax. Those distinctions matter more than reading the HL prefix as a complete feature description or borrowing hardware from the neighboring MFC models in the shared guide.

Each original goes on the glass

The original guide gives maximum glass dimensions of 8.5 × 11.8 inches; the brochure describes 8.5 × 11.7 inches. Both support appropriate Letter and A4 work, and neither establishes a full Legal flatbed. A Legal output capability therefore should not qualify an uncut Legal original on the glass. Leave space for the cover and follow the loading instructions for books, photographs or fragile items.

The exact model is excluded from the ADF list, and the product record explicitly says there is no duplex scanning. A stack requires individual handling. Automatic print duplex moves output paper rather than originals. This can be a reasonable tradeoff when scanning is occasional, but a repeated stack-capture routine should require a documented feeder configuration.

A cassette, a manual slot and regional print duplex

The cassette holds up to 250 sheets on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain-paper basis. The manual slot takes one suitable sheet or envelope at a time. Documented ordinary input includes Letter, Legal and A4. Appropriate media, weight, paper-source and output settings still matter, particularly for special stocks rather than ordinary office paper.

The US automatic print-duplex list is Letter, Legal and Folio. A generic A4 duplex-speed label does not override that specific regional list. One-sided output is rated up to 25 Letter or 24 A4 pages per minute in both color and monochrome. Letter duplex is separately up to eight sides, or four sheets, per minute. These different modes and units are manufacturer specifications, not hands-on measurements.

Native desktop controls and wireless mobile printing

The machine includes USB and ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, with separately documented Wi-Fi Direct printing. Ethernet is absent from the exact model's LAN list. Native scan-to-PC instructions explicitly name HL-L3290CDW, select a destination computer on a network and use ControlCenter for settings. The compatible USB or ordinary Wi-Fi scanner arrangement is therefore established independently of mobile printing.

The Windows Secure Print routine uses a separate four-digit password for each document, followed by selection and release at the panel. Stored data clears after printing and at power-off. That is a genuine native protected-job feature, separate from a scan-destination PIN. AirPrint and Mopria are recorded as network printing routes without promising every native scanner control or held-job feature in a phone app. Generic PC-Fax software rows do not add fax hardware.

Workload and several separate consumables

The recommended monthly maximum is 1,500 pages, while 30,000 pages is maximum duty. The starter set is declared around 1,000 pages for each color. Standard TN-223 replacements are approximately 1,400 black and 1,300 each cyan, magenta and yellow pages; TN-227 replacements are approximately 3,000 black and 2,300 each color under ISO/IEC 19798. The drum set, belt and waste toner box are separate maintenance items.

The US edition specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Its body measures 16.1 × 18.7 × 14.5 inches and weighs 47.8 lb with supplies. Leave cover, feed and service access beyond the closed body and confirm software compatibility for the intended computer. Choose it for documented color output and individual flatbed capture when a feeder, Legal glass, Ethernet and analog fax are not required.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact original rates one-sided Letter up to 25 ppm in color or monochrome, A4 up to 24 ppm. Letter duplex is separately up to 8 sides / 4 sheets per minute. Recommended monthly maximum 1,500 pages is distinct from 30,000 maximum duty.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette at stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² capacity basis plus one-sheet manual feed. Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary input is documented. US automatic print duplex is Letter, Legal and Folio; no A4 duplex is assigned from a generic speed row.

Scanning arrangement

Color flatbed only; HL-L3290CDW is excluded from the actual ADF model list. Original guide gives glass 8.5 × 11.8 in.; brochure describes 8.5 × 11.7 in. Neither establishes Legal glass. Exact product says no duplex scanning. No analog fax hardware is included.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, separate Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint and Mopria printing. Exact LAN list excludes HL-L3290CDW. Native computer scanning is established on compatible USB/ordinary Wi-Fi; scan-destination PIN is separate from the positively documented four-digit Secure Print routine.

Supplies and declared yields

Included starter set approximately 1,000 pages each BK/CMY. TN-223 replacements approximately 1,400 black and 1,300 each CMY; TN-227 approximately 3,000 black and 2,300 each CMY under ISO/IEC 19798. DR-223CL drum, BU-223CL belt and WT-223CL waste box are separate maintenance items.

Electrical edition and setup

US 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Exact original body 16.1 × 18.7 × 14.5 in. and 47.8 lb with supplies. Its two-line monochrome display does not change the color print engine. Check compatible desktop software and leave glass-cover, manual-feed and service access.
