HL-L5000DIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible local office computer, including a specifically supported parallel application, needing ordinary monochrome duplex work.

The main tradeoff

USB and parallel are standard; the Ethernet and wireless interfaces of network siblings are absent from this exact model.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it USB-print Legal duplex with 300 included sheets, native PIN release and a 3,500-page recommended workload?

Qualifies with the compatible native Windows driver and suitable paper. The 42 Letter ppm declaration is a separate one-sided speed figure; protected jobs use their own four-digit passwords.

Can this exact local model connect directly to Ethernet?

Fails: its included interfaces are USB and parallel. The network interfaces listed for other HL-L5000 family members are not part of HL-L5000D.

Does it include 1,340 input sheets without lower-tray purchases?

Fails: the included cassette and MP tray total 300 sheets. The larger advertised capacity requires optional lower trays.

A local office printer with a useful legacy interface

The Brother HL-L5000D suits a compatible local office computer that needs monochrome laser output, automatic print duplex and a real multipurpose tray. Its included parallel interface also provides a specific route for supported legacy applications alongside USB. The deciding limit is networking: this exact model does not inherit Ethernet or Wi-Fi from the other printers covered by its shared guide.

The assessment uses Brother’s exact US product record, model-qualified support table and original operating guide. These sources establish documented functions rather than current stock, individual condition or guaranteed compatibility with every application. It is print-only, without scanner, copier or fax hardware. PCL, BR-Script and the other named emulations are application interfaces, not evidence that every driver exposes every advanced function.

Three hundred included sheets, with expansion priced separately

The main cassette holds 250 sheets and the MP tray another 50 on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² ordinary-paper basis. Both routes cover Letter, Legal and A4 dimensions, giving 300 included sheets for those normal sizes. The MP tray’s separate allowance is up to ten suitable envelopes; that is not the same as a 50-envelope capacity or an automatic duplex-envelope routine.

The advertised 1,340-sheet expanded input requires optional lower trays. The base printer does not contain that capacity simply because the family supports it. Different tray sizes and quantities also affect the physical installation. Select the proper paper source and media type when keeping ordinary stock in the cassette and special jobs in the MP path.

Automatic duplex and one-sided speed are separate

The US operating guide explicitly lists Letter, Legal and related Legal lengths for automatic two-sided printing. It requires the back cover closed, suitable regular or thin paper and the appropriate driver setting; bond paper is excluded from that particular routine. A4 ordinary input support does not establish A4 automatic duplex in the US configuration assessed here.

The exact model table rates one-sided printing at up to 42 Letter ppm or 40 A4 ppm. Duplex uses a separate sides-and-sheets condition, and the product record explains that its simplex headline requires changing the default duplex setting. These are manufacturer declarations rather than measurements from testing here. A paper-saving default should not be combined with the simplest one-sided headline to imply the same completed-sheet throughput.

USB printing and deliberate parallel compatibility

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel are standard. The US package lists a parallel cable, while the shared guide notes that cable inclusion can vary by country. Brother specifically describes DOS printing through parallel, but the actual application, emulation and settings still need to fit. The presence of a legacy port is useful evidence of an intended arrangement, not a universal promise for every old program.

Native Windows Secure Print uses a separate four-digit password for each document, followed by release at the printer’s panel. Secured jobs clear after printing and when power is turned off. That is an actual held-job workflow, distinct from a lock slot or general administration password. No mobile protocol is borrowed into the USB plan, and no network socket is inferred from other model branches.

Recommended volume, supplies and body fit

Brother recommends up to 3,500 printed pages per month and separately declares a 50,000-page maximum duty cycle. The maximum is not routine-volume guidance. The included standard TN-820 toner is declared at approximately 3,000 pages and TN-850 replacement toner at 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate DR-820 drum declaration varies from approximately 30,000 pages at one page per job to 50,000 at three pages per job under the stated Letter/A4 simplex conditions.

The US support range is 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. The loaded base body measures 14.7 × 15.3 × 10.0 inches and weighs 23.5 lb. Allow tray loading, rear-output and service clearance beyond that closed footprint. These facts do not establish current consumable costs or remaining supply life. Choose the HL-L5000D for a compatible local printing arrangement; require an exact networked or scanner-equipped model when shared network access or document capture is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US table rates up to 42 one-sided Letter ppm or 40 A4 ppm. Automatic duplex has a separate sides/sheets condition; the one-sided headline requires changing the default duplex setting.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray total 300 sheets on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis, covering Letter, Legal and A4. MP envelope capacity is separately up to ten suitable envelopes. US automatic duplex covers Letter/Legal and related Legal lengths, not A4 from simplex support alone.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel. The US package lists a parallel cable; cable inclusion can vary by region. Ethernet, Wi-Fi and NFC branches in the shared guide belong to named other models.

Supplies and declared yields

Included standard TN-820 toner approximately 3,000 pages, with TN-850 replacement approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. DR-820 drum approximately 30,000 pages at one page per job or 50,000 at three pages per job, with Letter/A4 simplex conditions.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US support specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Body 14.7 × 15.3 × 10.0 in. and 23.5 lb with supplies. Recommended monthly maximum 3,500 is distinct from 50,000 maximum duty. Optional lower trays and operating clearance are separate from the closed base configuration.
