HL-L5100DNIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired workgroup needing native PIN release and a documented recommendation up to 3,500 printed pages per month.

The main tradeoff

There is no built-in Wi-Fi. Expanded 1,340-sheet input requires optional trays, and mobile printing cannot borrow native-driver PIN release.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can native Ethernet combine mono Legal duplex, PIN release and 300 sheets for 3,500 monthly pages?

Qualifies with compatible native Windows software and suitable paper. Exact one-sided Letter output is rated up to 42 ppm; optional trays are not counted.

Does mobile printing mean the printer includes ordinary Wi-Fi?

Fails: the exact model includes USB and Ethernet. Its supported mobile arrangement uses a suitable shared network without adding a printer radio.

Can AirPrint also provide native protected PIN release in one plan?

Fails: the documented mobile protocol and native Windows protected-job workflow are separate arrangements.

A wired workgroup printing arrangement

The Brother HL-L5100DN is a discontinued monochrome laser printer with USB and included Ethernet. It fits a compatible wired workgroup making black documents, needing automatic two-sided output and supported native protected jobs. Its included input is 300 ordinary sheets, with a documented recommendation up to 3,500 printed pages monthly. It is print-only and has no internal Wi-Fi radio.

The exact model matters within its large shared manual. The HL-L5100DN has a 250-sheet cassette, one-line panel and 10/100 Ethernet. Larger cassettes, a touchscreen, Gigabit networking, wireless hardware and faster output rates appear in other explicitly labeled columns. Those features are excluded rather than treated as general family equipment.

Paper capacity before optional trays

The included cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray another fifty on the stated 20 lb plain-paper basis. Both support Letter, Legal and A4. The advertised 1,340-sheet expanded configuration needs optional lower trays; the included base therefore remains 300. Suitable envelopes use the separately instructed multipurpose path and its media settings. The cassette and multipurpose path also have different permitted paper-weight ranges, so the driver’s stock setting still matters.

The exact US automatic-duplex list includes Letter, Legal, Folio, Mexico Legal and India Legal. Ordinary A4 input does not extend that list. A selected size and automatic duplex must fit the same documented routine. Envelope handling is a separate ordinary operation, rather than a promise to duplex an envelope or load the full plain-paper capacity as envelopes.

Native PIN release and network mobile printing

Included Hi-Speed USB and 10/100 Ethernet support compatible native desktop printing. The actual Secure Print workflow sets a separate four-digit password for the document, then releases the selected user and job at the panel. Protected data clears after printing or power-off. That specific operating routine establishes more than a generic security label, while still requiring compatible native software.

AirPrint and Mopria are also documented, with a suitable shared-network requirement. The printer uses wired Ethernet while the mobile device reaches that network through its access point. This does not add a radio to the printer. It also does not establish native Windows password release in a mobile protocol plan, so those arrangements remain separate.

Letter speed and monthly recommendation

The original rates output up to forty-two one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately from forty at A4. Automatic Letter duplex is separately up to twenty printed sides or ten sheets per minute. These are maker declarations rather than personal timing results, and first-print timing is another distinct measurement.

The recommended monthly maximum is 3,500 pages. Maximum duty is 50,000, a different figure that does not authorize a larger recurring recommendation. For example, a 5,000-page monthly requirement exceeds the documented recommendation even though it is far below maximum duty. Choosing only the largest number would miss that practical limit.

Supplies and installation

The included toner declaration is approximately 3,000 pages. TN-820 replacement toner is approximately 3,000 and TN-850 approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The guide restricts TN-880 to other family members, so it is excluded here. The separate DR-820 drum declaration distinguishes one-page jobs from three-page jobs. Those source yields do not establish current cost or remaining consumable life.

The body measures 14.7 × 15.3 × 10.0 inches and weighs 23.5 lb with supplies. The US original specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Leave cassette, multipurpose, rear-path, cable, ventilation and service room. Verify usable native software, actual trays and the network arrangement. If an internal radio or document capture is essential, choose an exact model documenting that hardware rather than expecting mobile protocol names to supply it.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 42 one-sided Letter ppm, separately from 40 A4 ppm. Letter automatic duplex is separately up to 20 printed sides / 10 sheets per minute. Recommended monthly maximum 3,500 differs from 50,000 maximum duty; neither speed nor duty enlarges the recommendation.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray at stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis, both accepting Letter, Legal and A4. Optional LT-5500/LT-6500 trays are excluded; 1,340 requires additions. Exact US automatic duplex list is Letter, Legal, Folio, Mexico Legal and India Legal. Suitable envelopes use the instructed MP path.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB and 10/100 Ethernet, 256 MB and one-line panel. No included Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct or Gigabit interface; those belong to other explicitly listed models. AirPrint and Mopria use a suitable shared network with the printer wired to Ethernet and the mobile device reaching that network. Native four-digit PIN release is a separate driver routine.

Supplies and declared yields

Approximately 3,000-page included toner; TN-820 replacement approximately 3,000 and TN-850 approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. TN-880 is restricted to other exact family members and excluded here. Separate DR-820 drum approximately 30,000 pages at one page per job or 50,000 at three pages per job under Letter/A4 simplex conditions.

Software and support

Native Windows Secure Print holds supported jobs until panel user/job selection and a four-digit password. Data clears after printing or power-off. Mobile AirPrint/Mopria plans do not inherit that native routine or unverified exact paper/duplex subsets. Historical software examples require confirmation for the actual host.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact body 14.7 × 15.3 × 10.0 in.; original loaded weight 23.5 lb. US original 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Leave cassette, MP, rear-output, cable, ventilation and service access. Verify usable native software, actual trays and network setup for the earlier unit.
