Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can native Ethernet combine Legal duplex, PIN release, 570 included sheets and a 10,000-page recurring workload?
Qualifies with suitable native Windows software and paper. Exact one-sided Letter output is declared up to 52 ppm; included capacity is 570 sheets.

Fails: base input is 570 sheets. The tower and its four additional trays require separate hardware.

The Brother HL-L6400DW is a discontinued dedicated monochrome laser printer for a compatible workgroup that needs substantial black-document output. Its useful combination is 570 included sheets, a manufacturer recommendation up to 10,000 printed pages monthly, native protected jobs and toner declared at approximately 12,000 pages in the box. Scanning, copying and faxing require another device.
This exact DW model differs from both the smaller HL-L6250DW and the taller HL-L6400DWT package in its shared manual. It has 512 megabytes and a 1.8-inch color touchscreen. Neither that color display nor the name of a mobile print-and-scan application gives it color printing or scanner hardware.
Count the installed input and output hardware
The included cassette holds 520 sheets and the multipurpose tray adds fifty, on the stated 20 lb paper basis. Both accept Letter, Legal and A4. Optional lower trays can expand input to 1,610 sheets; the alternative tower arrangement includes four additional 520-sheet trays and reaches 2,650. These larger configurations require additional hardware and should not be counted in the base machine.
Standard output is 250 sheets. The original mailbox instructions explain distinct recipient, sorting and stacking arrangements. Reaching the advertised 1,050-sheet output involves the optional mailbox and its specified bin arrangement. Assigning bins to users also requires administrator configuration. The large expanded-output headline does not describe the ordinary desktop package.
Legal duplex and the actual print rate
The US operating guide lists Letter, Legal, Folio, Mexico Legal and India Legal for automatic two-sided printing, with suitable 16–28 lb paper. Ordinary input support for A4 does not expand that regional duplex list. Envelopes use their own instructed multipurpose feed routine rather than the automatic duplex path.
One-sided speed is declared up to fifty-two Letter pages per minute, separately from fifty A4 pages. Letter duplex is up to twenty-four printed sides or twelve sheets per minute. These manufacturer figures describe different routines and are not personal measurements. The monthly recommendation is up to 10,000 pages; maximum duty of 150,000 is a separate durability declaration, rather than a recurring-workload allowance.
Native protected jobs and mobile network printing
Hi-Speed USB, Gigabit Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi are included. Native Windows Secure Print sets a separate four-digit password for each document. At the touchscreen, the operator chooses Functions, Secure, the user and the job before entering that password. Data clears after printing or power-off. Suitable native software is essential to this arrangement.
AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct are separately documented printing routes. They do not establish the same native protected-job workflow. Integrated NFC authentication and the rear HID-reader connection also have their own configuration requirements. The manual index identifies separately licensed Secure Print+ and Secure Print Advanced solutions; their presence does not make those additional solutions standard. Historical cloud-service names do not establish present service availability.
DR-890, supplies and installation space
Replacement TN-820, TN-850, TN-880 and TN-890 cartridges have distinct ISO/IEC 19752 yields; the largest is declared at approximately 20,000 pages. That replacement declaration differs from the approximately 12,000-page included cartridge. The separate DR-890 drum has a stated 50,000-page life at three pages per job or 30,000 at one page per job under its conditions. None of these figures establishes current running cost or remaining life.
The loaded body is 15.7 × 15.6 × 11.3 inches and 29.3 lb. The US original specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Leave cassette, multipurpose, output, cable and maintenance access, and account separately for added trays or finishing hardware. A workflow requiring captured originals needs a genuinely scanner-equipped alternative.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact HL-L6400DW up to 52 one-sided Letter ppm and 50 A4 ppm. Automatic duplex separately up to 24 sides / 12 sheets per minute; Letter rate retained without transferring A4 duplex permission from generic speed text. Recommended monthly maximum 10,000 differs from 150,000 maximum duty.
Paper handling
Included 520-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP at 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis, supporting Letter, Legal and A4. Optional lower trays reach 1,610; alternative tower with four 520-sheet trays reaches 2,650. Standard output 250; expanded mailbox/stacker and stapler hardware are optional. Exact US automatic duplex permits Letter, Legal, Folio, Mexico Legal and India Legal; envelopes use separate MP routine.
Scanning arrangement
Dedicated monochrome printer with no scanner, ADF, copier or telephone fax. The maker manual explicitly conditions mobile app scanning on scanner hardware; a color touchscreen does not change output color.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard Hi-Speed USB, Gigabit Ethernet, ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, separately documented Wi-Fi Direct and integrated NFC card reader; 512 MB and 1.8-inch color touchscreen. Rear USB host is stated for a single-function HID card reader, not assumed flash-document printing.
Supplies and declared yields
Included toner approximately 12,000 pages. Replacements TN-820 approximately 3,000, TN-850 approximately 8,000, TN-880 approximately 12,000 and TN-890 approximately 20,000 under ISO/IEC 19752 Letter/A4 conditions. Separate DR-890 drum approximately 50,000 pages at three pages per job or 30,000 at one page per job; these are declarations, not remaining life or current cost.
Software and support
Native Windows Secure Print uses a separate four-digit document password, followed by touchscreen Functions > Secure, user and job selection. Data clears after printing or power-off. Secure Print+ and Secure Print Advanced are separately licensed solutions in the manual index, distinct from included native release. Historical cloud names do not guarantee current service.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US original 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Body 15.7 × 15.6 × 11.3 in.; 29.3 lb with supplies, excluding the taller T package. Allow MP, cassette, output, rear-cover, cable and maintenance access; optional tower and output hardware change the installed footprint.
