MFC-4800Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Compatible USB computers needing monochrome Legal feeder capture, copy and standalone fax.

The main tradeoff

Dated local software, monochrome scanning and manual two-sided output limit its role.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB computer capture a stack of Legal originals while the machine also provides mono printing, copy and fax?

Yes, using the actual native monochrome feeder-scanning software and separate fax telephone setup. Legal is an explicit scanner size; the feeder holds up to twenty suitable sheets.

Can it preserve color when scanning an original?

No. The actual scanner choices and exact specification establish monochrome/grayscale capture.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does its duplex driver icon mean automatic two-sided printing?

No. The original operation requires manual reloading and specifically describes an LPT1 arrangement.

A feeder-based local fax MFP

The Brother MFC-4800 is a discontinued monochrome laser reference for a compatible local desktop that needs basic printing, feeder scanning, copying and fax. Its original twenty-sheet document feeder can handle suitable Legal-length originals, while the ordinary print supply holds up to two hundred sheets. The main limits are the dated local software arrangement, monochrome capture and manual handling of two-sided work.

The actual US owner’s manual names both FAX-2800 and MFC-4800. Its computer-printing and scanner chapters explicitly belong to the MFC-4800. A fax-only sibling appearing on the cover does not remove this model’s documented computer functions, and a later Brother MFP’s color scanner or flatbed should not be added to it.

Scanning means feeding appropriate sheets

In the actual computer routine, place the document face down in the feeder, select the Brother TWAIN source and start capture from the application. The available types are black and white or grayscale. The size choices expressly include Letter, Legal and A4, with brightness, contrast and resolution adjustments for a suitable original.

The image, OCR and email buttons are shortcuts into configured computer software. OCR requires the relevant application to interpret the scanned text; it is not a promise that every original becomes an error-free editable document. The email shortcut hands an attachment to the computer’s application rather than establishing a standalone network scanner.

A prescan also feeds the page. After choosing the crop, the original instructs the user to put the document through the feeder again for the final scan. That matters when organizing a stack: a preview does not leave the original on a glass surface ready for a second capture. Automatic two-sided capture is not established.

Confirm the computer before relying on USB

USB and bidirectional parallel are the listed local interfaces. The original offers native Windows software and a Macintosh USB arrangement, but its compatibility branches are old and materially different. Windows 95 and Windows NT do not support its USB route. Some listed Macintosh versions support printing only, while the specified later classic-system branch supports printing and scanning.

Check an actual working driver and application for the intended computer. The existence of an old download or an available USB socket does not establish support for every current operating system. No included Ethernet, Wi-Fi, AirPrint or Mopria workflow is established here.

The standalone fax modem is declared at 14.4 kbps and uses the documented telephone-line setup. The up-to-ninety-page reception-memory figure uses Brother’s standard test chart. It is neither the twenty-sheet original-feeder capacity nor a guarantee for ninety complex real-world pages.

Paper supply and two-sided output

The multipurpose sheet feeder accepts ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 paper and specified envelope sizes. Its capacity table qualifies the two-hundred-sheet declaration with twenty-pound Letter/A4 stock; Legal is accepted, but that table does not independently establish a two-hundred-sheet Legal stack. Up to ten suitable envelopes use the same feeder with the paper guides adjusted.

The printer is declared at up to ten one-sided pages per minute using Letter or A4. It has two megabytes of memory. Those are maker specifications, not measured throughput in this review, and the sources do not establish a recommended monthly workload.

Two-sided output requires reloading. The original Windows manual-duplex chapter prints even pages, prompts for reinsertion and then prints odd pages; its connection instruction specifically selects LPT1. A general duplex icon is therefore no reason to call this an automatic-duplex printer or promise that routine through every USB driver.

Supplies and the condition of an older unit

The US supply list names TN-250 toner and a separate DR-250 drum. Starter toner is declared up to one thousand pages, replacement toner up to 2,200 Letter/A4 pages at five-percent coverage. Drum life varies sharply with job length: up to twenty thousand pages at twenty pages per job or eight thousand at one page per job.

The US/Canadian original specifies 120 V, 50/60 Hz. Its 16.5-pound weight excludes the drum, so loaded weight remains unknown. Published inch dimensions differ between the web reference and manual and are left unresolved. A supported newer MFP is the sensible alternative when color capture, glass, networking or automatic duplex is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 10 one-sided pages per minute using Letter or A4. Numerical recommended monthly volume is not established.

Paper handling

Multipurpose feeder: up to 200 sheets of 20 lb Letter/A4 paper or ten suitable envelopes. Legal is accepted, but its exact 200-sheet capacity is not established by the qualified table. Manual output duplex requires reloading; the documented Windows routine selects LPT1.

Scanning arrangement

Twenty-sheet feeder at 20 lb. Actual native TWAIN capture offers monochrome/grayscale and Letter/Legal/A4 sizes. Prescan requires feeding the original again. No color capture or confirmed automatic two-sided capture.

Computer and mobile connections

2 MB, USB and bidirectional parallel. Original USB excludes Windows 95/NT; listed Macintosh versions distinguish printing-only from printing/scanning. No included network arrangement established.

Supplies and declared yields

TN-250: starter up to 1,000 pages, replacement up to 2,200 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage. Separate DR-250: up to 20,000 pages at twenty pages/job or 8,000 at one page/job.

Electrical edition and setup

Actual US/Canadian original specifies 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Original 16.5 lb excludes drum, so loaded weight is unknown. Web/manual inch dimensions differ and are left unknown.
