MFC-7220Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An established compatible desktop that needs monochrome loose-page capture and a conventional telephone fax routine.

The main tradeoff

The scanner is monochrome and sheet-fed; network servers are optional accessories rather than included Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can this earlier USB all-in-one scan suitable Legal pages in monochrome and supply standalone copy and fax?

Qualifies with compatible desktop scanning software and suitable telephone service for fax. The 20-page feeder,250-sheet print input and 20 ppm Letter rating belong to the exact 7220.

Can I use the normal included configuration directly over Ethernet?

Fails: USB and parallel are included. The external wired print server is optional, and a 7225N network specification does not add an Ethernet interface to 7220.

A local desktop and telephone document routine

The Brother MFC-7220 is an earlier monochrome laser all-in-one for an established, compatible desktop arrangement. It prints, copies, scans and handles conventional fax, with a 20-page automatic document feeder for suitable loose originals. Its main boundary is easy to overlook: the scanner is monochrome, and the standard computer interfaces are local USB and parallel. Color document capture or an included office network connection calls for a different exact configuration.

Brother identifies the model as discontinued. Its surviving operating documents are useful for understanding an existing machine or an earlier replacement candidate, but they do not establish current stock, condition or universal software compatibility. Check the actual computer and scanner driver before assuming that basic printer detection supplies the full original workflow.

What the feeder can capture

The exact US MFC-7220 branch supports up to 20 feeder pages on the stated 20 lb paper basis. The neighboring MFC-7225N branch supports 30 under its conditions, so that larger number should not be transferred to the 7220. Prepare a suitable stack, fan it, and load originals face down with the top edge entering first. Remove staples and avoid curled, damaged, taped or otherwise unsuitable originals.

The feeder accepts originals 5.8–8.5 in. wide and 3.9–14 in. long, covering suitable Legal pages. This is a sheet-fed scanner rather than a flatbed for a book or fragile original. A bound page that cannot travel through the feeder needs another scanner with documented glass. The scanner’s 200 × 400 dpi optical figure differs from its 1200 × 1200 dpi interpolated figure; neither OCR software nor a larger interpolated number changes monochrome capture into color.

Ordinary paper and occasional special media

The included cassette holds up to 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper, with Letter, Legal and A4 among the supported sizes. Legal loading requires extending the rear of the tray. The original instructions also warn that Legal paper cannot be stacked on the output tray, which matters when planning a long unattended job or positioning the printer near a wall.

A separate manual slot accepts one suitable sheet or envelope at a time. It is useful for occasional labels, envelopes or other supported media, but it is not another full cassette. Set the guides and paper choice to match the actual stock. The US guide rates the printer at up to 20 one-sided Letter ppm using Brother’s standard pattern, excluding paper-feed time. That figure is a manufacturer declaration, not a measured result here or a promise for every file.

Standard local connections and optional servers

Full-Speed USB 2.0 and bidirectional IEEE 1284 parallel are included. The USB interface has a 12 Mbit/s maximum transfer rate; connecting it to a faster compatible host does not turn it into a Hi-Speed interface. Use the supported desktop software for the actual printing and scanner functions rather than inferring them from the operating system’s ability to find a device.

The NC-2100p external wired print server and NC-2200w wireless USB server are optional accessories. They are not evidence of a standard Ethernet socket or an included Wi-Fi radio, and accessory support does not by itself establish every network scanning function. The 7225N has separately documented network hardware and functions; its shared manual does not erase that model distinction.

Fax setup and consumable expectations

The exact 7220 fax modem is 14.4 kbit/s, rather than the 33.6 kbit/s branch assigned to other models. Conventional fax requires suitable telephone service and the correct receiving setup. PC-Fax support has separate software restrictions: the US specification limits receiving to USB or parallel, and the original Mac support is sending only. A fax rate should not be treated as a print or scanner rate.

The USA guide declares approximately 1500 starter pages and 2500 pages for a separately purchased TN-350 at 5% coverage on Letter or A4. The DR-350 drum is separate, with an approximate 12000-page life affected by use. These older coverage-based figures are not ISO yield claims or a current cost estimate. The US body measures 14.7 × 14.7 × 10.3 in.; allow loading and service access. If color scanning, book-page capture or built-in networking is central, choose a model whose exact hardware and software establish those needs.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original US guide rates up to 20 one-sided Letter ppm using Brother standard pattern, excluding paper-feed time. Exact US web table also lists Letter/A4 at 20 ppm. No automatic duplex rate is established.

Paper handling

The included cassette holds up to 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper, including Letter, Legal and A4. A single manual-feed slot accepts a suitable envelope or sheet. Legal requires tray extension and has a specific output-stacking warning. The original shared software guide explicitly documents manual print duplex: even pages first, then user reloading.

Scanning arrangement

Exact MFC-7220 has a 20-page ADF on the specified 20 lb basis. Its monochrome scanner accepts originals 5.8–8.5 in wide and 3.9–14 in long; optical 200 × 400 dpi is separate from interpolated 1200 × 1200 dpi. There is no flatbed route.

Computer and mobile connections

Full-Speed USB 2.0 and bidirectional IEEE 1284 parallel are included. NC-2100p wired external print server and NC-2200w wireless USB server are optional. The 7225N network hardware is not assigned to 7220.

Supplies and declared yields

USA guide declares approximately 1500 starter pages and 2500 pages for separately purchased TN-350 at 5% Letter/A4 coverage. DR-350 has an approximate 12000-page life affected by use; these are not ISO yield declarations.

Electrical edition and setup

USA guide specifies 100–120 V AC 50/60 Hz and 14.7 × 14.7 × 10.3 in body dimensions. Its 16.2 lb weight excludes drum and toner, so loaded weight is unknown. No numeric monthly recommendation or duty cycle established.
