MFC-7225NIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible established office sharing black-and-white printing and scanning over Ethernet.

The main tradeoff

The scanner captures monochrome rather than color, and its document path is a sheet feeder; optional wireless hardware is not included.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can this earlier wired all-in-one scan a Legal batch and print monochrome Letter documents at the maker’s 20 ppm rating?

Qualifies using the documented Ethernet scanner with supported desktop software. The US package has 250-sheet print input and a 30-page ADF; its scanner is monochrome.

Can I preserve colored annotations in the scanned file?

Fails: the exact MFC-7225N US scanner specification says monochrome. Its OCR software and high interpolated resolution do not make it a color scanner.

Can I place a bound page on a flatbed instead of passing it through the feeder?

Fails: this document scanner uses the ADF and has no flatbed route. Choose a model with a documented glass platen for bound or unsuitable originals.

A wired monochrome workflow with a specific scanner limit

The Brother MFC-7225N suits an established office that already has compatible software and wants shared black-and-white documents, copying and conventional fax. Its built-in Ethernet is useful when several desks need the same machine. The deciding limitation is the scanner: this exact model scans in monochrome. A multifunction label, OCR software or a high resolution number does not promise preservation of colored highlights, stamps or photographs.

Brother identifies the model as discontinued. Treat it as an earlier equipment reference and check the actual operating system, available driver and physical machine before planning a replacement around it. The original documentation describes real supported arrangements; it does not promise that every historical application remains available or compatible with a present computer.

Loose originals and the US feeder configuration

The document route is a sheet-fed ADF rather than a flatbed for books. In the US guide, the MFC-7225N belongs to the branch supporting up to 30 staggered sheets under specified conditions, including suitable 20 lb Letter paper and the recommended environment. The nearby MFC-7220 branch supports 20. An inherited UK specification also says 20, so the US capacity should come from the US model branch rather than a blended family headline.

Originals can measure 5.8–8.5 in. wide and 3.9–14 in. long, allowing suitable Legal pages through the feeder. Remove staples and avoid damaged, curled, taped or unsuitable originals. A fragile document that cannot travel through that path needs a different scanner with a glass platen. The optical scanning figure is 200 × 400 dpi; the larger 1200 × 1200 figure is interpolated and should not be described as optical detail.

Ordinary paper, occasional envelopes and rated speed

The included cassette holds up to 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper, with Letter, Legal and A4 among its supported sizes. For Legal, the instructions require extending the rear of the tray. They also warn that Legal output cannot be stacked on the output tray. These practical instructions matter more than simply seeing Legal in a size list when arranging a workspace or leaving a long job unattended.

A separate manual slot accepts one suitable sheet or envelope at a time. It is useful for occasional special media, but it does not add a second full paper cassette. Brother gives the US model an up-to-20-ppm Letter print rating based on its standard pattern, excluding paper-feed time. That is a one-sided document rating, not a measured result here or a guaranteed pace for every file.

Ethernet sharing and the limits of optional wireless

USB, parallel and 10/100 Ethernet are documented interfaces. USB is explicitly Full-Speed USB 2.0, with a 12 Mbit/s maximum transfer rate; compatibility with a faster USB host does not change that interface. The US network section positively supports network printing, network scanning and PC-Fax sending with the stated software. Historical Mac network scanning requires OS X 10.2.4 or greater in that guide, so basic network visibility alone is insufficient evidence of scanning compatibility.

The NC-2200w wireless USB server is an option, not a built-in Wi-Fi radio supplied with the normal printer. Do not plan a cable-free setup from that accessory listing. PC-Fax receiving has a separate restriction: the US specification limits it to USB or parallel. Conventional fax also needs an appropriate telephone service and setup; it is not delivered by the Ethernet cable.

Supplies and a sensible boundary for replacement

The USA guide declares approximately 1500 pages for the starter and 2500 for a separately purchased TN-350, using 5% coverage on Letter or A4. The DR-350 drum is a separate item with an approximate 12000-page life affected by use. These older coverage-based declarations should not be relabeled as ISO cartridge yields or turned into a current cost estimate. The body measures 14.7 × 14.7 × 10.3 in.; allow tray and service access. If color capture, bound-original scanning or built-in wireless is essential, choose a printer whose exact configuration documents those functions.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US guide S-5 gives up to 20 one-sided Letter ppm using Brother standard pattern, excluding paper-feed time. UK A4 rating is separately scoped.

Paper handling

Included cassette holds 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper including Letter/Legal/A4. Single manual feed accepts one envelope or suitable special-media sheet; extend the tray for Legal and heed the Legal output stacking warning. The original shared software guide explicitly documents manual print duplex: even pages first, then user reloading.

Scanning arrangement

The monochrome optical 200 × 400 dpi scanner uses the ADF, accepting 5.8–8.5 in. width and 3.9–14 in. length. The US guide supports 30 staggered Letter sheets under its specified 20 lb paper and environment conditions; the UK 20-sheet figure is not the US configuration.

Computer and mobile connections

Full-Speed USB 2.0, parallel and included 10/100 Ethernet are documented. The NC-2200w wireless USB server is optional. Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint and Mopria support is not established.

Supplies and declared yields

The USA guide declares approximately 1500 starter pages and 2500 pages for separately purchased TN-350 toner at 5% Letter/A4 coverage. DR-350 drum life is around 12000 pages under stated usage conditions. These are not ISO yield claims.

Electrical edition and setup

The USA guide specifies 100–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz and a 14.7 × 14.7 × 10.3 in. body. Its 16.2 lb weight excludes drum and toner, so full operating weight remains unknown.
