MFC-7240Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible local computer handling loose black documents, standalone faxing and occasional multi-page monochrome capture.

The main tradeoff

There is no flatbed or color scanning; the two-sided copy routine is manual and no automatic print duplex is supplied.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB desktop use all four functions, scan loose Legal originals and load 250 sheets for 2,000 monthly pages?

Qualifies for monochrome work. The exact USB computer route supports print/scanning, the feeder accepts Legal originals and the 2,000-page requirement reaches the recommended maximum. Letter output is separately rated up to 21 one-sided ppm.

A sheet-fed all-in-one with monochrome capture

The Brother MFC-7240 combines monochrome laser printing, copying, computer scanning and faxing in a sheet-fed design. Its original feeder handles loose documents rather than books placed on a glass. This is an earlier USB platform for a compatible local computer, with a telephone connection for standalone fax work.

Its scanner is monochrome. That restriction is stated both in the exact product description and in the MFC-7240 scanner specification, so it should not be confused with other mono printers that capture color originals. Saving a scan as a PDF, JPEG or another image format does not change the source sensor's documented color capability.

Twenty ordinary feeder pages, with a qualified exception

The regular ADF declaration is twenty pages on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis. The original separately permits thirty staggered pages only under specified temperature, humidity and paper conditions. Twenty is therefore the ordinary included feeder capacity used here, rather than treating a conditional loading technique as the general rating.

The feeder accepts documents 5.8–8.5 inches wide and 5.8–14 inches long, including Legal originals. Fan suitable sheets, open the document support and output flap, and load according to the guide. Folded, stapled or damaged pages need attention before feeding. There is no flatbed for a bound booklet, a card that cannot feed safely or a single delicate original.

Native USB software provides computer scanning

The original computer table positively lists USB printing and scanning for the applicable Windows and Mac branches. The Windows operation installs the scanner driver, selects the exact model in ControlCenter 4 and configures the file destination and format before scanning. A compatible driver is a real part of this arrangement, rather than assuming the physical connector alone guarantees software support.

There is no included Ethernet or wireless interface in that table. AirPrint, Mopria and peer wireless printing are not supplied by the telephone fax connection. The original operating-system lists describe that period's support, so verify usable software for the actual computer. PC fax receive also has platform restrictions separate from standalone fax operation.

Paper and duplex expectations

The cassette holds up to 250 plain sheets and accepts ordinary Letter, Legal and A4, with a one-sheet manual path for suitable envelopes and other listed stock. Open the rear output as directed when using the straight paper path. The single-sheet slot is not another stack tray and should not inflate an included-capacity comparison.

Automatic print duplex is not supplied. The copy menu's manual two-sided routine requires operator handling; it does not establish automatic capture of both faces through the feeder. The exact MFC-7240 output rating is up to 21 one-sided Letter pages per minute. The nearby FAX-2940 column's faster rating belongs to a different model.

Workload, supplies and installation

The recommended monthly range is 250–2,000 pages, distinct from the 10,000-page maximum duty figure. Approximately 700 inbox toner pages are declared; TN-420 replacement toner is approximately 1,200 and TN-450 approximately 2,600 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate DR-420 drum is approximately 12,000 pages under its conditions. Those source yields do not establish current running costs or remaining life in a particular unit.

The US original specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz and a 19.8 lb weight with consumables. Height is 12.2 inches. Original drawing and surviving product width/depth entries differ, so those numerical limits remain unassigned here. A unit intended for continued use also needs intact paper supports and the complete toner-and-drum assembly; a software table cannot establish its physical condition. Check the actual unit and leave room for feeder supports, output, rear access, cables and servicing before relying on a tight cabinet fit.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact MFC-7240 original rates up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm; the neighboring FAX-2940 24 ppm branch is excluded. Recommended monthly range 250–2,000 pages is distinct from maximum 10,000-page duty.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette for Letter, Legal, A4 and other listed sizes on stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain-paper basis; manual feed takes one sheet or suitable envelope at a time. Automatic print duplex is not supplied. Twenty-page ordinary ADF rating applies; original separately permits 30 staggered pages only under specific paper/environment conditions.

Scanning arrangement

Sheet-fed monochrome computer capture only, with 5.8–8.5 in. width and 5.8–14 in. document length. Legal capture is through the ADF, with no glass for books/cards. Native USB scanner driver and compatible ControlCenter 4 operation are documented. No automatic two-sided capture is established; manual duplex copy is not automatic input scanning.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB only in the exact original computer-interface table. No built-in Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint or Mopria route is assigned. Standalone fax uses its telephone connection; that is separate from the USB computer connection. Native PIN-held printing remains unestablished.

Supplies and declared yields

Approximately 700 inbox toner pages, TN-420 replacement approximately 1,200 and TN-450 approximately 2,600 under ISO/IEC 19752. Separate DR-420 drum approximately 12,000 pages under its stated conditions; the FAX-2940 1,200-page starter is a different column.

Electrical edition and setup

Original specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz and 19.8 lb with consumables. Height 12.2 in. agrees across sources. Original drawing width/depth differ from surviving product cells, so numerical width/depth remain unknown rather than silently mixing editions. Leave feeder, output support, rear paper path, cable and service space; verify usable software for the actual computer.
