Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can native USB provide all functions, color Legal feeder capture and 250 included Legal sheets?
Qualifies with suitable native software, paper and separate telephone setup. Output is mono and Legal capture uses the simplex ADF.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the Windows duplex routine satisfy automatic two-sided printing?
Fails: the original driver prints even pages first and asks the operator to reinsert the stock.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard machine offer native Ethernet scanning?
Fails for the included configuration: its Ethernet and wireless server options are additional hardware; standard Ethernet belongs to MFC-7820N.
Explore this need in the finder →A local all-in-one with color document capture
The Brother MFC-7420 is a discontinued monochrome laser all-in-one suited to a compatible local desk that needs printing, copying, color scanning and telephone fax. Its included computer interfaces are USB and parallel. A thirty-five-page feeder handles one-sided batches, while a separate glass supports individual or bound originals.
The shared original also covers MFC-7820N, but that model’s standard Ethernet, thirty-two-megabyte memory, PCL and BR-Script functions are excluded here. MFC-7420 has sixteen megabytes, a Windows GDI specification and a 14,400 bps modem. Similar appearance and a common manual do not make those configurations interchangeable.
Legal capture belongs to the feeder
The original feeder range reaches 8.5 × 14 inches, supporting Legal capture. Capacity is up to thirty-five sheets on the stated paper basis. This is a simplex original route: documents requiring both sides need operator handling rather than a documented automatic reverse-side or single-pass routine.
The glass reaches 8.5 × 11.7 inches, accommodating Letter and A4 rather than Legal. The exact scanner is color capable even though printed and copied output is monochrome. Its optical and interpolated resolution declarations describe different things; the larger interpolated number does not change the physical glass size or provide another feeder mechanism.
USB software and a separate telephone arrangement
The software guide documents selecting the USB scanner in a TWAIN application, setting document size and image controls, then starting capture. The scan-key chapter also positively supports color attachments and file or image destinations through compatible USB software. Appropriate Brother drivers and applications are required before that key can launch the intended routine.
The USB interface is Full-Speed at a maximum twelve megabits per second. Compatibility with a Hi-Speed computer interface does not make the printer itself Hi-Speed. Optional external wired or wireless servers are separate purchases, and the neighboring N model’s built-in network functions are not inherited. Telephone fax uses its own documented line arrangement rather than the USB cable; present telephone-service compatibility needs checking.
250 tray sheets and genuinely manual duplex
The included tray holds 250 sheets of the specified plain stock and accepts Letter, Legal and A4. A separate manual slot feeds one sheet at a time for appropriate special media or envelopes. This is useful occasional handling rather than a second full paper tray. The original additionally warns that Legal output cannot be stacked in the output tray.
The Windows two-sided routine prints even-numbered pages first and then asks the operator to reinsert the stock. Straightening it before reinsertion is part of the instruction. This manual process does not satisfy an automatic-duplex requirement, and it does not change the scanner’s one-sided feeder. A workflow needing unattended two-sided output or captured originals needs different hardware.
Original speed, supplies and cabinet basis
Output is declared up to twenty one-sided Letter pages per minute using Brother’s standard pattern, excluding paper-feed time. That is a manufacturer declaration rather than a measured result. No recurring monthly recommendation or maximum duty is inferred from that speed or the cartridge size.
The TN-350 starter is declared at approximately 1,500 pages, versus approximately 2,500 for replacement toner on the original five-percent Letter/A4 coverage basis. The separate DR-350 drum declaration is approximately 12,000 pages with use-dependent conditions. These figures do not establish current cost or remaining installed supply life.
The US original specifies 100–120 VAC. Its body is 17.0 × 15.6 × 11.6 inches, but the published 20.81 lb explicitly excludes drum and toner, so loaded weight remains unknown. Leave feeder, lid, paper-path and maintenance access, and verify usable historical software before relying on this earlier configuration.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 20 one-sided Letter ppm using Brother standard pattern and excluding paper feed time. This is not automatic-duplex speed or a scan rate. Exact 14,400 bps modem differs from MFC-7820N 33,600. Recommended monthly volume and maximum duty are not established by the cited originals.
Paper handling
250-sheet tray at 20 lb / 80 g/m² for Letter, Legal and A4; separate manual feed is one sheet at a time. Windows manual duplex prints even pages then asks for reinsertion, not automatic output duplex. Original S-2 says Legal paper cannot be stacked in output tray. Envelopes use instructed single-sheet manual routine.
Scanning arrangement
35-page simplex ADF on stated paper basis reaches 8.5 × 14 in.; separate glass 8.5 × 11.7 in. supports Letter/A4, not Legal. Color capture is positive and separate from mono print/copy. Native TWAIN and USB Scan-to-File/Image/OCR routines require suitable driver/application; automatic ADF duplex is not established by manual refeeding.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard USB 2.0 Full-Speed, maximum 12 Mbit/s despite Hi-Speed compatibility language, plus IEEE1284 parallel. Native USB computer capture is positive. Exact 16 MB and Windows GDI; MFC-7820N 32 MB, standard Ethernet, PCL6/BR-Script 3 and faster modem are excluded. NC-2100p external print server and NC-2200w wireless server are optional.
Supplies and declared yields
TN-350 starter approximately 1,500 pages; replacement approximately 2,500 Letter/A4 pages at 5% print coverage, not relabeled ISO. Separate DR-350 approximately 12,000 pages with use-dependent conditions. Declared yields do not establish current cost, remaining toner or drum life.
Software and support
Use matching native USB printer/scanner selection and appropriate Brother drivers. Software 2-7–2-8 documents TWAIN setup; 2-13–2-14 confirms USB color attachment and file/image routines. Manual duplex requires straightening and reloading stock. Ordinary fax uses separate documented public telephone-line setup; do not infer network fax or guarantee VoIP compatibility.
Electrical edition and setup
USA original 100–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Actual viewed body 17.0 × 15.6 × 11.6 in. Exact 20.81 lb is WITHOUT drum/toner, so loaded weight remains unknown. Allow ADF, lid, input, output, cable and service access, and verify usable historical software, telephone arrangement and any separately installed server.
