MFC-7820NIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired desktop needing ordinary monochrome output and color capture of one-sided Legal stacks.

The main tradeoff

Print duplex needs manual refeeding; the wireless server is optional, and Legal does not fit the smaller glass.

Your needs, this model

A wired all-in-one with genuine color capture

The Brother MFC-7820N suits a compatible wired desktop that needs monochrome laser output and ordinary color document capture. Its included Ethernet interface supports an actual network scanner arrangement, while a 35-sheet feeder handles suitable one-sided stacks. The deciding limits are manual print duplex, the smaller glass and the optional rather than included wireless server.

Brother’s exact support identifies this as a discontinued model. Its documentation remains useful as an earlier equipment reference, without a claim about current availability, unit condition or compatibility with every new computer. The printer and copier produce monochrome output, while the scanner can capture color. The original manual distinguishes that hardware from the nearby MFC-7420’s different memory, emulation and network configuration.

Legal originals use the feeder

The ADF holds up to 35 suitable sheets and accepts originals up to 8.5 × 14 inches. The glass stops at 8.5 × 11.7 inches, covering Letter and A4 length rather than a full Legal original. A Legal feeder requirement can therefore fit this machine while a Legal flatbed requirement does not. Use the glass for suitable items that should remain stationary and follow the feeder’s original-condition instructions for loose pages.

The documented desktop scan routes are ordinary simplex feeder and flatbed capture. Automatic two-sided feeder scanning is unestablished and is not inferred from the ADF’s presence. The optical scan figures and higher interpolated headline also describe different settings; neither changes the physical size of the original that can fit on the glass.

Input capacity and output handling

The main cassette holds up to 250 sheets of the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain paper and supports Letter, Legal and A4. A separate one-sheet manual feed accepts suitable envelopes and other supported special media. It is not an additional stack tray, and its media capacity should not be combined with the cassette headline to promise a large envelope supply.

The original guide specifically warns that Legal output cannot be stacked in the normal output tray. That operational detail matters even though Legal paper fits the input. The software’s manual-duplex routine first prints even-numbered pages and then asks the user to reload them before the other side prints. This is different from an unattended automatic duplex unit and requires appropriate paper and careful stack handling.

Ethernet is included; Full-Speed USB is not Hi-Speed

The standard interfaces are Ethernet, IEEE 1284 parallel and Full-Speed USB 2.0. The original guide explicitly limits that USB interface to 12 Mbit/s, even when connected to a compatible Hi-Speed USB host. A shared USB version number should not be used to invent a faster printer-side transfer rate. Confirm the actual desktop driver and interface supported by the computer in use.

The original software guide names the 7820N in its network-scanning applicability and explains TCP/IP and destination-computer registration. The scan-destination PIN protects that scan action; it is not evidence of password-held print-job release. PC-FAX Receive also has separate interface restrictions and should not be promised over Ethernet. The optional NC-2200w wireless server is excluded from the base configuration, so it does not establish built-in Wi-Fi or a modern mobile printing protocol.

Speed, older yield conditions and body space

The original print table declares up to 20 one-sided Letter ppm using the maker’s standard pattern and excluding paper-feed time. This is not a measured result here or a two-sided sheet rate. The TN-350 declarations distinguish an approximately 1,500-page starter from a 2,500-page replacement at 5% Letter/A4 coverage, with a separate approximately 12,000-page DR-350 drum declaration. These older conditions are not automatically ISO toner yields, remaining life or a current cost calculation.

The US manual specifies 100–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Its actual body drawing gives 17.0 inches wide, 15.6 deep and 11.6 high; the 20.93 lb weight excludes drum and toner, so loaded weight remains unknown. Allow paper, glass-cover and service access beyond the closed body. Choose it for compatible wired monochrome work and simplex color capture. Require another documented model for automatic two-sided handling, Legal glass or included wireless networking.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original exact print table gives up to 20 one-sided Letter ppm using the maker’s standard pattern, excluding paper-feed time. No A4 or duplex-sheet rate is substituted for this Letter declaration.

Paper handling

The 250-sheet main cassette on a 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis supports Letter, Legal and A4. One-sheet manual feed accepts suitable envelopes. The original manual warns that Legal output cannot be stacked in the normal output tray. The manual refeed driver routine does not provide automatic print duplex.

Scanning arrangement

The 35-sheet simplex ADF accepts originals through 8.5 × 14 in.; glass maximum is 8.5 × 11.7 in. Color scanning is established while printing and copying remain monochrome. Automatic feeder-duplex capability and method are unestablished.

Computer and mobile connections

Included IEEE 1284 parallel, Full-Speed USB 2.0 with a maximum 12 Mbit/s transfer rate, and 10/100 Ethernet. Compatibility with a Hi-Speed USB host does not change the printer-side rate. The NC-2200w external wireless print/scan server is optional.

Supplies and declared yields

The original TN-350 starter is approximately 1,500 pages and the standard replacement approximately 2,500 at 5% Letter/A4 coverage, with a separate DR-350 drum around 12,000 pages. These are older coverage-based declarations, not invented ISO yields.

Electrical edition and setup

US 100–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. The actual original drawing gives 17.0 in. wide, 15.6 deep and 11.6 high. The 20.93 lb figure excludes drum and toner, so loaded weight remains unknown. No numeric monthly recommendation is inferred.
