Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I scan loose Legal pages in color to a computer through ordinary Wi-Fi?
Yes, using a compatible network scanner driver and the simplex feeder. Legal does not fit the shorter glass.
Explore this need in the finder →Will it print both faces automatically without my reloading the stack?
No. The documented driver duplex procedure requires manual paper refeeding.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan a complete Legal original on the glass?
No. The glass reaches 11.7 inches; Legal originals require the feeder.

The Brother MFC-7840W suits an existing small office that wants monochrome output, color scanning, copying and conventional fax with several computer connections. Its particular advantages within its generation are included wireless networking, Ethernet and native print emulations. The deciding tradeoff is automation: printed duplex requires the user to reload the paper, and its feeder captures single-sided originals. Neither a wireless interface nor an all-in-one description removes that manual handling.
Brother marks this exact model discontinued. Evaluate it as an earlier machine whose actual software support, supplies and physical condition need checking. The product narrative also identifies a faster fax modem and memory-backup features than nearby models, so generic family table entries should not override the exact original model qualifications.
Pick the physical connection that the installation can support
The model includes USB, Fast Ethernet and 802.11b/g ordinary Wi-Fi. Ethernet is useful when an older radio does not suit the available wireless network, while USB serves a nearby computer. Its USB interface is compatible with the USB 2.0 specification but has a maximum data rate of twelve Mbits per second. It should not be described as a Hi-Speed USB device simply because a Hi-Speed cable can be used.
The original computer table establishes desktop printing and scanning over the listed local and network interfaces, with separate restrictions for server operating systems. Network-print visibility alone does not establish network capture. Install the appropriate scanner software and choose the correct local or LAN source when saving a document.
The feeder reaches Legal, but the glass does not
The automatic document feeder holds up to thirty-five staggered sheets under Brother’s stated conditions. It accepts loose originals through Legal length. The glass has a maximum document length of 11.7 inches, covering Letter and A4. A long loose form can use the feeder, whereas a long bound original cannot be treated as a full-size flatbed scan.
Color scanning is explicitly described in the product narrative and supported by the original scanner specification. The monochrome print engine therefore does not limit a saved file to monochrome. The guide also distinguishes optical scanner resolution from software interpolation. Choosing an enlarged resolution value does not make the feeder or glass acquire additional physical detail.
Keep paper capacity and manual duplex realistic
The main cassette holds 250 sheets of the specified plain stock, including Letter, Legal and A4 sizes. A separate single-sheet manual feed handles suitable envelopes and other permitted media. Match the size and media settings to the actual feed rather than assuming an envelope follows the normal cassette routine.
To print both faces, the Windows driver first prints one group of pages and then prompts the user to reinsert the stack. Straightening and correctly orienting that stack are part of the job. This process may suit occasional two-sided documents, but an automatic duplex printer is a more appropriate comparison for frequent unattended batches. The maker’s one-sided print declaration is up to twenty-three Letter pages per minute, distinct from the slower twenty-one-page variants in the shared manual.
Password release and supplies have separate conditions
The native Secure Print routine lets a driver submit a protected job and requires its four-digit password at the panel before printing. Held data clears after printing or power-off. That is different from locking changes to machine settings or restricting users’ functions. Confirm the appropriate driver exposes the desired control instead of assuming every generic printing route behaves identically.
The original supplied toner is rated at approximately 1,000 pages. TN-330 replacement toner is approximately 1,500 Letter pages and TN-360 approximately 2,600 under ISO/IEC 19752. The DR-360 drum has a separate approximate 12,000-page declaration with usage conditions. Those ratings do not establish remaining supply life or a current operating cost.
The US edition uses 110–120 V AC. Its listed twenty-two-pound weight excludes toner and drum, so loaded weight remains unestablished. Allow space for document loading, paper access and maintenance. Choose a newer model with explicitly supported drivers and the required duplex hardware when either software compatibility or repeated manual refeeding would disrupt the intended office routine.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 23 one-sided Letter ppm. Recommended monthly volume is not established. The 33.6 kbit/s fax modem rating is separate from print speed.
Paper handling
250-sheet cassette plus separate one-sheet manual feed. Ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 input; driver duplex is manual stack refeeding, not an automatic duplex unit.
Scanning arrangement
Color computer scanning; Legal-length simplex ADF and Letter/A4 glass. Generic black-and-white scan label conflicts with exact narrative/original scanner table and is not adopted.
Computer and mobile connections
USB at maximum 12 Mbit/s, Fast Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g Wi-Fi are included. Ad-hoc mode is not represented as Wi-Fi Direct. Server support is network printing only.
Supplies and declared yields
Starter approximately 1,000 pages; TN-330 approximately 1,500 and TN-360 approximately 2,600 Letter pages, ISO/IEC 19752. DR-360 approximately 12,000 pages, subject to use.
Electrical edition and setup
US edition: 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Body W 16.9 × D 15.6 × H 12.0 in. The listed 22 lb excludes drum and toner; loaded weight remains unknown.
