MFC-8220Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A deliberately compatible local office routine handling ordinary loose-sheet monochrome originals and fax documents.

The main tradeoff

Its scanner captures monochrome rather than color, and the Ethernet board is optional equipment.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it print monochrome and scan a one-sided Legal stack over USB, with 250 included sheets?

Qualifies with a compatible desktop driver and suitable loose originals in the ADF. The scan file is monochrome; analog fax and copying are separate normal routines.

Can I require color capture of a highlighted original?

Fails: the exact original scanner table explicitly specifies monochrome. Its grayscale capture does not satisfy a color-scan requirement.

Does the base 8220 include Ethernet without installing another board?

Fails: the NC-9100h network board is optional. Included USB and parallel do not establish standard Ethernet.

A sheetfed machine for monochrome document routines

The Brother MFC-8220 suits a deliberately compatible local office that handles loose-sheet monochrome originals, fax documents and ordinary laser output. Its 30-sheet ADF reduces handling for a suitable stack, while the 250-sheet cassette supplies regular paper. The deciding limits are important: the scanner captures monochrome, there is no flatbed, and standard computer connections are USB and parallel rather than included Ethernet.

Brother identifies this exact model as discontinued. Its original USA documentation remains useful for evaluating earlier equipment, without establishing current availability, unit condition or compatibility with every new operating system. The maker’s five-in-one description counts PC-Fax alongside printing, copying, scanning and faxing; that wording should not be mistaken for an additional color or duplex hardware feature.

Monochrome scanning really means monochrome

The original scanner specification explicitly says Monochrome. A highlighted page or colored form can be captured as its supported grayscale or black-and-white image, but this device does not satisfy a requirement to preserve color in the computer scan. Its scan-resolution headline is also an optical-versus-interpolated distinction, not evidence of color capture.

The documented original route is the ADF, accepting loose originals up to 8.5 × 14 inches. Load suitable pages face down and top edge first, with the guides adjusted correctly. The original loading section specifies up to 30 pages and gives its paper basis as 20 lb or 75 g/m². Avoid stapled, damaged, pasted or unsuitable originals. A book or fragile item needing a stationary glass surface calls for a different documented scanner design.

Regular paper and manually handled duplex

The cassette holds up to 250 sheets of the stated 20 lb plain paper and supports Letter, Legal and A4. A separate manual feed takes one sheet or suitable envelope. That path provides flexibility for occasional special jobs, but it is not a second cassette. The ordinary-paper capacity should not be assigned to a stack of envelopes or every media weight.

The software guide describes Manual Duplex Printing: output the even-numbered pages, then straighten and reinsert the stack when the Windows driver asks before printing the other side. This is different from unattended automatic duplex. The one-sided print declaration is up to 21 Letter ppm from the main tray; the US web table separately gives 20 A4 ppm. These are manufacturer conditions rather than measurements made for this assessment.

USB is standard; the network board is an option

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel are included. The NC-9100h network board is an optional upgrade that adds its documented network functions. Those option descriptions should not be presented as Ethernet already supplied in the base MFC-8220. The USB operating arrangement here uses a compatible native desktop printer and scanner driver.

The original requirements exclude USB on Windows 95 and NT4, even though those systems appear in broader driver or parallel lists. Confirm the actual interface and supported driver for the computer in use. Secure Print is a separate password-held job workflow, released from the machine’s panel, with up to 8 MB of secured data in the documented configuration. It is not the same thing as general device locking or a fax-memory headline.

Supplies, loaded-weight uncertainty and fit

The original TN-540 declaration is up to 3,500 pages and TN-570 up to 6,700 using 5% Letter/A4 coverage. The DR-510 drum is declared up to 20,000 pages with usage factors. These older maker conditions are not automatically ISO yields, remaining-life estimates or a current cost calculation. Numeric recommended monthly volume is unestablished and is not inferred from the print-speed figure.

The USA guide specifies 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. The body measures 17.0 × 17.8 × 13.2 inches, but its actual S-1 weight of 25.6 lb excludes drum and toner; the web table’s 25.5 lb is unqualified. Loaded weight therefore remains unknown. Allow feeding and maintenance space. Choose it for compatible monochrome sheetfed work; require a color scanner, glass or included network interface when those functions determine the choice.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm from the main paper tray; US web table separately gives 20 A4 ppm. Copy and fax-capture speeds are separate conditions. Print duplex requires manual refeeding.

Paper handling

The main cassette holds 250 sheets of stated 20 lb plain paper in Letter, Legal or A4. Manual feed takes one sheet or suitable envelope. The 30-sheet ADF accepts loose originals through 8.5 × 14 in.; the original loading section labels its 20 lb paper as 75 g/m².

Scanning arrangement

The original S-4 scanner specification explicitly says Monochrome, with an ADF original range 5.8–8.5 in. wide and 3.9–14 in. long. Sheetfed document hardware has no flatbed. Automatic duplex feeder capture is unestablished.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1284 parallel. The NC-9100h Ethernet board is an optional upgrade rather than standard networking. A compatible native Windows USB print/scan arrangement is assessed here.

Supplies and declared yields

The original TN-540 declaration is up to 3,500 pages and TN-570 up to 6,700 using 5% Letter/A4 coverage; the DR-510 drum is up to 20,000 pages with usage factors. These are older coverage-based declarations, not asserted ISO yields or remaining supplies.

Electrical edition and setup

Original US 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Body 17.0 × 17.8 × 13.2 in. The actual S-1 table labels 25.6 lb without drum/toner; the web 25.5 lb is unqualified, so loaded weight remains unknown. No numeric recommended monthly volume is inferred.
