MFC-8440Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible USB desktop needing Legal capture, monochrome output, copying and analog fax without built-in network requirements.

The main tradeoff

Automatic print duplex, the 50-sheet MP tray and built-in Ethernet belong to other configurations in the shared guide.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB computer use Legal glass for color scanning, monochrome output, copy and fax, with 250 included sheets?

Qualifies in the documented USB desktop arrangement. The exact MFC-8440 has Legal glass and a simplex feeder; fax also needs a suitable telephone connection. Color scanning does not change its monochrome print engine.

Does the normal MFC-8440 include Ethernet because the shared manual also covers MFC-8840DN?

Fails: MFC-8440 network hardware is optional. The DN model’s built-in network cannot be transferred to this configuration.

Can it satisfy an automatic two-sided printing requirement?

Fails: the shared guide explicitly gives automatic print duplex to the D and DN configurations, excluding MFC-8440.

A local multifunction model with Legal glass

The Brother MFC-8440 combines monochrome laser printing and copying, color computer scanning and analog fax. Its full Legal-size flatbed and 50-sheet automatic document feeder can make it useful for an older compatible desktop document routine. The model's identity matters: the shared manual also covers MFC-8640D, MFC-8840D and MFC-8840DN, whose duplex, tray and network equipment are different.

This review treats the MFC-8440 as an earlier equipment reference. It does not infer current availability, remaining service life or universal software compatibility. A suitable USB computer arrangement is the documented standard route used here. Fax requires a suitable telephone line, and an optional network accessory is not counted as a built-in interface.

Legal scanning without an automatic duplex promise

The glass accepts originals through 8.5 × 14 inches, giving a stationary route for appropriate Legal originals. The simplex ADF also reaches Legal length and holds up to 50 suitable pages under the maker's loading conditions. Use the glass for appropriate originals that should not pass through rollers; use the feeder for suitable loose sheets. Books, damaged pages and mixed originals still need the relevant precautions.

Color capture is a scanner function. The printer and copier output remain monochrome. The read exact evidence does not establish an automatic two-sided scanning mechanism or single-pass duplex capture for MFC-8440. A user who needs unattended capture of both sides should therefore require a model and computer arrangement that positively document that function, rather than infer it from the word multifunction.

Read the tray and duplex model qualifiers

The MFC-8440 includes a 250-sheet cassette and a single-sheet manual feed. The 50-sheet multipurpose tray in the same original table belongs to the D and DN configurations. Documented ordinary input includes Letter, Legal and A4, while special media and envelopes use the proper feed instructions. An optional lower cassette is separate from the standard configuration.

The original product description explicitly assigns automatic print duplex to the D and DN models. MFC-8440 is excluded from that list. A shared cover or a nearby table column cannot supply the missing mechanism. Printing is rated up to 21 Letter or 20 A4 pages per minute in the exact US table. Those one-sided manufacturer declarations are not a measured office throughput result or a duplex-sheet speed.

USB scanning and stored-job release

Full-Speed USB and parallel are the standard computer interfaces. The NC-9100h Ethernet board is optional, whereas MFC-8840DN has built-in network capability. That distinction prevents the standard MFC-8440 from qualifying a requirement for included Ethernet. A print-sharing solution also should not be assumed to preserve every native scanner feature.

The compatible USB printer/scanner setup supports the local computer functions described in the original sources. The common control-panel instructions identify a Secure print key that releases stored data after a four-digit password. This is a print-job routine, separate from the fax Memory Security setting and from any scan-destination access control. Historical driver and operating-system lists need to be checked against the intended computer before relying on an older machine.

Supplies and installation uncertainties

The manual lists TN-540 toner at approximately 3,500 pages and TN-570 at approximately 6,700 using 5% Letter/A4 coverage. These are older coverage-based declarations, not ISO/IEC figures. The DR-510 drum is separate and has an approximately 20,000-page declaration under its conditions. They do not establish the remaining supply life of a particular unit or a current running cost. An exact recurring monthly recommendation remains unknown in the read sources.

The US/Canada original specifies 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Its inch dimensions conflict with the support record and do not resolve cleanly against the printed millimeter figures. Numerical cabinet dimensions are left unknown rather than chosen for convenience. The stated 36.6 lb excludes the drum/toner unit, so it is not a loaded-weight declaration. Verify the actual installation, glass-cover movement and service clearance when considering this Legal-capable local multifunction machine.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US table specifies up to 21 Letter or 20 A4 printed pages per minute. No exact recommended recurring monthly volume is established in the read sources.

Paper handling

MFC-8440 has a 250-sheet main tray plus single-sheet manual feed. The 50-sheet MP tray is for specified D/DN neighbors. Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary input is documented; automatic print duplex belongs to D/DN models and is not included here. Optional lower tray is excluded.

Scanning arrangement

50-sheet simplex ADF and full Legal-size 8.5 × 14 in. glass. Color computer scanning is independent of monochrome printing. Automatic duplex scanning and a single-pass mechanism are unestablished for this exact model.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Full-Speed USB and parallel; NC-9100h Ethernet board is optional, unlike built-in network on MFC-8840DN. Compatible USB desktop scanning is documented. Four-digit Secure key print release is not the same as Memory Security fax lock or a scan-destination PIN.

Supplies and declared yields

TN-540 approximately 3,500 pages and TN-570 approximately 6,700 pages at 5% Letter/A4 coverage; these older figures are not relabeled ISO/IEC yields. Separate DR-510 drum approximately 20,000 pages under its conditions.

Electrical edition and setup

US/Canada original specifies 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Body dimensions remain unknown because official inch/mm declarations and the support record conflict. Stated 36.6 lb excludes drum/toner, so loaded weight is not assigned. Confirm the actual cabinet, glass-cover movement and service space.
