MFC-8460NIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired office that needs full-length Legal glass capture and ordinary one-sided document stacks.

The main tradeoff

The N model lacks the automatic print and scan duplex features reserved for named DN/DW siblings.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I scan Legal on the glass in color and print over Ethernet with 300 included Legal sheets?

Qualifies using compatible desktop scanner software. Both the glass and simplex ADF accept Legal originals; the included cassette plus MP tray provide 300 ordinary sheets.

Can it automatically duplex Letter print jobs?

Fails: the original guide reserves automatic print duplex for named other models. Their duplex unit and speed figure do not apply to the 8460N.

A wired office model with full-length Legal glass

The Brother MFC-8460N suits a compatible wired office that needs monochrome printing, color document capture and an actual Legal-size flatbed. Its 50-sheet feeder handles ordinary one-sided stacks, while the included cassette and multipurpose tray provide 300 sheets of regular input. The deciding tradeoff is duplex hardware: this N configuration does not inherit the automatic print or scan duplex features of named DN and DW siblings.

Brother identifies the exact model as discontinued. Its documented configuration remains useful as an earlier reference without promising current availability, unit condition or support for every new computer. Printing and copying are monochrome, while scanning can capture color. The original device also provides analog fax with the appropriate telephone setup; that is separate from the Ethernet connection.

Legal scanning does not always require feeding

The glass accepts originals up to 8.5 × 14 inches. That provides a genuine Legal flatbed route, useful when a suitable original should remain stationary rather than pass through a feeder. The simplex ADF also accepts Legal dimensions and holds up to 50 staggered sheets on the stated paper basis. Follow the loading and original-condition instructions rather than treating that capacity as permission to feed any object.

The original guide explicitly limits duplex scanning to named other models. It also distinguishes their shorter two-sided original range from the general Legal simplex range. Those features do not transfer to the 8460N. For this exact arrangement, color Legal glass and simplex feeder capture are established; an unattended two-sided document requirement needs a different documented model.

Three hundred included sheets with optional expansion separate

The cassette holds 250 sheets and the MP tray another 50 on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² ordinary-paper basis. Both routes cover Letter, Legal and A4 dimensions, providing 300 included sheets for those normal page sizes. Suitable envelopes and other documented special media use their appropriate MP routine and settings, rather than being treated as a 300-envelope stack.

The optional lower cassette increases capacity to 550 sheets, but it is not included in the base configuration assessed here. Automatic print duplex is also reserved for named other models in the original guide. The shared manual’s duplex settings or throughput therefore cannot be used to promise an automatic unit in the 8460N. Check the exact hardware rather than relying on a family-level feature list.

Desktop connections and held print jobs

USB, IEEE 1284 parallel and 10/100 Ethernet are standard. Actual network scanner sharing is positively documented, with exceptions for Windows NT4 and Mac OS 9. A compatible desktop driver and scanner setup are required for the selected connection. USB support has its own historical operating-system qualifications, so an overall list of supported platforms should not be applied to every interface indiscriminately.

Secure Print is a password-held job workflow in the supported native driver, followed by release at the control panel. That is different from general user-access locking or a scan-destination PIN. The wireless interface in this shared guide belongs to the MFC-8870DW; it is not included here. AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct are unestablished and are not inferred from modern generic software menus.

Speed, supplies and the actual unit footprint

Brother declares up to 30 one-sided Letter ppm or 28 A4 ppm. The highest 1200 dpi setting can reduce speed. Those figures are manufacturer conditions, not measured results from testing here, and they do not establish a numeric recommended monthly workload. The original US supply declarations identify TN-550 at approximately 3,500 pages and TN-580 at 7,000 using 5% Letter/A4 coverage, with a separate approximately 25,000-page DR-520 drum declaration. These older conditions should not be relabeled as modern ISO toner yields.

The original US power range is 100–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. The body measures 20.9 × 17.7 × 18.7 inches; the 36.4 lb figure excludes drum and toner, so loaded weight remains unknown. Allow loading, document-cover and maintenance clearance. Choose the 8460N when compatible wired monochrome work and Legal glass capture fit the routine. Require a correctly documented duplex variant when automatic two-sided handling is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 30 one-sided Letter ppm or 28 A4 ppm. The original guide warns that the highest 1200 dpi setting can slow printing. Duplex throughput for named other models does not apply to the 8460N.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray total 300 sheets on a 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis. Both documented paths cover Letter, Legal and A4. The optional lower cassette expands to 550 sheets but is excluded from included capacity.

Scanning arrangement

The 50-sheet staggered simplex ADF and actual Legal-size glass both accept originals up to 8.5 × 14 in. Color scanning is established while printing and copying are monochrome. Automatic duplex scanning is expressly limited to named other models.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB 2.0, IEEE 1284 parallel and 10/100 Ethernet. Network scanner sharing is positively documented with operating-system exceptions. Wireless belongs to the 8870DW; no AirPrint, Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct is inferred.

Supplies and declared yields

The original shared US guide declares TN-550 at approximately 3,500 pages and TN-580 at 7,000 using 5% Letter/A4 coverage; the DR-520 drum is approximately 25,000 pages. These are older maker conditions rather than invented ISO toner yields.

Electrical edition and setup

Original US 100–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Body 20.9 × 17.7 × 18.7 in. The exact 36.4 lb figure excludes drum and toner, so loaded weight remains unknown. No numeric monthly recommendation is inferred from 30 ppm.
