Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it combine Legal simplex color scanning over Ethernet, fax and automatic Legal print duplex?
Yes, with the compatible native network software, feeder and separate telephone-line setup. The Legal original uses the 35-sheet feeder, and the US print-duplex table supports Legal.
Explore this need in the finder →Will it automatically capture both faces of each feeder original?
No. The exact 8510 scanner column lacks automatic duplex capture; the feature belongs to specified neighboring models.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it join ordinary Wi-Fi without a wired network cable?
No included wireless route is documented. Its exact interface branch provides USB and Ethernet and marks wireless unavailable.

The Brother MFC-8510DN is an earlier monochrome laser reference for a compatible wired office that needs printing, copying, computer scanning and fax. It provides automatic two-sided printed output, 300 sheets of included print input and a 35-sheet automatic document feeder. The deciding distinction is that its feeder captures one face at a time. The automatic print-duplex unit does not make this a two-sided scanning machine.
Brother’s replacement chart places the exact MFC-8510DN in its discontinued column. That establishes an earlier model reference, rather than a current-stock claim. The original’s separate model columns matter because the wireless MFC-8710DW and duplex-scanning MFC-8910DW have functions that should not migrate into this assessment.
Legal originals fit the feeder, rather than the glass
The MFC-8510DN feeder supports suitable single-sided originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches. Its thirty-five-page capacity is based on the stated paper and handling conditions, rather than any stack of arbitrary thickness. Fan and align the sheets, load them face up and adjust the guides. The original gives the larger fifty-sheet declaration to other variants.
Its glass accepts originals up to 8.5 by 11.8 inches, which covers Letter and A4 but not a full Legal page. The fax instructions explicitly limit the Legal/Folio glass-size option to the other named models. Do not confuse the feeder’s Legal acceptance with a Legal flatbed.
The scanner can capture color even though the printer produces monochrome pages. Computer capture uses the applicable scanner driver and ControlCenter 4, with a document-size setting and destination folder chosen for the job. The SCAN-key routine also lets a network user choose the destination computer. Set up the required TCP/IP configuration; successful Ethernet printing by itself does not configure every scanner function.
Connections and fax setup must stay attached to their functions
Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet are included. The exact interface table marks wireless unavailable for the MFC-8510DN. The computer-function table associates applicable USB and Ethernet desktop arrangements with printing and scanning, while some server branches are printing only. Check the real operating system and driver rather than treating every row as interchangeable.
Fax is a separate documented telephone workflow with a 33.6-kbps modem. Originals can be loaded through the feeder or glass according to their size, then sent to the selected number. The presence of network PC-Fax functions does not make analog fax an Ethernet-port service or establish compatibility with every telephone service.
Keep ordinary input and automatic duplex together
The main cassette holds up to 250 sheets of the stated plain stock, and the multipurpose feed adds fifty. Both ordinary size ranges include Letter, Legal and A4. The original assigns the optional 500-sheet lower tray to the MFC-8710DW, MFC-8810DW and MFC-8910DW; it is not an MFC-8510DN expansion promise.
The US automatic print-duplex table supports Letter, Legal and Folio in appropriate plain, thin or recycled paper. A4 ordinary feeding does not enlarge that duplex list. Suitable envelopes use the multipurpose route and their media setting, with the original’s three-envelope limit kept separate from ordinary-paper capacity.
The exact engine column declares up to thirty-eight one-sided Letter pages per minute. Forty and forty-two are neighboring-model entries. Letter duplex is up to eighteen printed sides, or nine completed sheets, per minute. No recommended monthly workload is inferred from those figures.
Native held jobs and supplies have specific conditions
The applicable software guide documents submitting a password-protected job through the native driver and retrieving it with a four-digit password at the Secure Print key. The data clears after printing or when power is switched off. That routine should be checked with the actual driver; it is not a generic promise about every mobile or network application.
The original identifies approximately 2,000 pages of included toner for this exact model. TN-720 replacement toner is approximately 3,000 pages and TN-750 approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate DR-720 drum is declared at approximately 30,000 pages at one page per job.
The body measures approximately 15.9 inches wide, 16.3 deep and 16.7 high, weighing 34.8 pounds with consumables. The USA/CAN edition specifies 110–120 V AC. Allow extra operating room. For frequent two-sided originals, compare a documented duplex-scanning MFP instead of planning around manual original refeeding.
