Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it automatically capture both faces of Letter originals in color over Ethernet while printing two-sided Letter output with native PIN release?
Yes, with the compatible Brother native driver and TWAIN scanner. The actual original confirms automatic Letter duplex capture, Letter print duplex and four-digit panel release; it does not establish single-pass mechanics.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the automatic two-sided feeder routine also capture Legal originals?
No. Legal remains supported through simplex feeder or glass, but the actual duplex capture routine excludes it.
Explore this need in the finder →Does confirmed automatic duplex capture prove both faces are scanned in one pass?
No. The read original establishes automatic duplex but leaves its physical mechanism unspecified, so single-pass is not established.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired MFP with real automatic duplex capture
The Brother MFC-8670DN is a discontinued monochrome laser reference for a compatible wired office that needs printing, copying, color computer scanning and fax. Its useful feature is a fifty-sheet feeder that can capture both faces automatically for the documented Letter and A4 originals. The deciding boundary is size: Legal originals remain supported through the simplex feeder or glass, while automatic duplex capture excludes Legal.
The exact specification marks the model discontinued. Its inherited web selector says Other countries, so that label is retained rather than presented as an American selector. The actual original operating guide names MFC-8670DN explicitly and supplies the relevant US electrical and operating information.
Automatic two-sided does not establish single-pass mechanics
The original positively includes the MFC-8670DN in duplex scanning and duplex-copy operations. The compatible TWAIN routine loads the document face up in the feeder, selects duplex with the proper binding edge and starts capture. It excludes Legal, cropping the scan area and the PreScan preview from that duplex routine.
The read instructions do not establish whether both faces are captured in one pass or by a reversing mechanism. This assessment therefore records automatic duplex with the mechanism unspecified. It can support an ordinary automatic-duplex capture requirement at Letter or A4, but it cannot establish a single-pass requirement.
The glass accepts originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches, and the feeder accepts suitable single-sided originals to the same maximum. Its fifty-sheet capacity uses the stated paper and staggered loading conditions. Books or unsuitable feeder originals belong on the glass. Color capture remains distinct from the printer’s monochrome output.
Use a supported native computer route
Included connections are Hi-Speed USB 2.0, parallel and 10/100 Ethernet. The software’s scanner selection explicitly distinguishes the USB and LAN devices, and the original supports network printing and scanning subject to its operating-system restrictions. Configure the actual driver and network scanning rather than assuming a working print queue completes scanner setup.
The thirty-two-megabyte controller and five-line display are the correct branch. Wireless is assigned to the MFC-8870DW in the same manual, not the MFC-8670DN. A network utility or generic family diagram does not add that radio to this model.
Fax uses the original telephone arrangement and its 33.6-kbps modem. Computer fax and standalone telephone fax are related workflows, but fax should not be described as a service provided by the Ethernet socket itself.
Print duplex and paper handling have their own rules
A 250-sheet cassette and fifty-sheet multipurpose tray provide 300 ordinary sheets at the stated weight. Both size ranges accommodate Letter, Legal and A4. Additional paper hardware should be checked separately rather than counted in the included configuration.
The actual software operation explicitly permits A4, Letter and Legal for automatic print duplex with suitable regular paper. This print list is different from the Letter/A4 duplex-original list. Selecting Legal automatic print duplex is therefore supported, while selecting Legal automatic duplex scanning is not. The separate document routes need to stay attached to their functions.
Envelopes and appropriate special media use the multipurpose feed with the instructed orientation and settings. The declared one-sided engine rate is up to thirty Letter pages per minute. The original separately states thirteen duplex sides per minute, with its parenthetical six-and-a-half unit retained in the source notes rather than turned into a one-sided engine figure.
Native protected jobs and supply conditions
The supported native driver can submit a job with a four-digit password, user and job name. The user selects and releases it through Secure at the panel. Data clears after printing or power-off. The Windows software table excludes this Secure Print setting from the BR-Script driver, so the protected-job plan specifically uses the compatible Brother native driver.
The original declares TN-550 replacement toner at approximately 3,500 Letter/A4 pages and TN-580 at approximately 7,000 with five-percent coverage. DR-520 is a separate approximately 25,000-page drum declaration. Inbox yield and a recommended monthly workload remain unknown.
The cabinet is approximately 20.9 inches wide, 17.7 deep and 18.7 high, with a documented 100–120 V AC power range. Its 36.9-pound figure explicitly excludes drum and toner and is not used as loaded weight. Allow document and maintenance room; a documented single-pass MFP is the appropriate comparison when that specific capture method matters.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 30 one-sided Letter ppm. Original duplex declaration up to 13 sides/minute with parenthetical 6.5 pages; this is not reassigned as one-sided speed. No recommended monthly volume established.
Paper handling
300 included ordinary sheets: 250 cassette + 50 multipurpose at 20 lb / 80 g/m². Letter/Legal/A4 supported in both. Actual native software automatic print duplex accepts A4/Letter/Legal with regular stock; this differs from duplex-original size limits.
Scanning arrangement
Color capture over supported USB/configured Ethernet. 50-sheet simplex ADF and glass accept Legal. Automatic duplex ADF capture positively supports Letter/A4, not Legal; mechanism unspecified, so single-pass remains unestablished. Actual TWAIN duplex excludes PreScan and scan-area adjustment.
Computer and mobile connections
32 MB, five-line display, standard USB, parallel and 10/100 Ethernet. Wireless belongs to 8870DW only. Actual native four-digit protected-job routine; Windows BR-Script does not support that Secure Print setting. Fax uses a separate telephone setup.
Supplies and declared yields
TN-550 approximately 3,500 / TN-580 approximately 7,000 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage. DR-520 separate approximately 25,000-page declaration. Inbox yield unresolved.
Electrical edition and setup
Body W 20.9 × D 17.7 × H 18.7 in. Original power 100–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Listed 36.9 lb excludes drum and toner, so loaded weight is unknown. Inherited Other-countries selector is preserved honestly.
