MFC-8680DNIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

An office needing automatic two-sided Letter/A4 capture and separate Legal simplex or glass work.

The main tradeoff

No built-in Wi-Fi; automatic feeder duplex excludes Legal and its physical scan mechanism is unestablished.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I scan both sides of Letter originals automatically in color and print Letter duplex through Ethernet?

Yes, with compatible native desktop software. The documented automatic two-sided ADF mode covers Letter; its physical mechanism is not identified as single-pass.

Can that same feeder scan both sides of Legal originals automatically?

No. The original two-sided document limit is 11.7 inches and the TWAIN instructions expressly exclude Legal.

Can it connect directly through its own built-in Wi-Fi radio?

No. Included interfaces are USB, parallel and Ethernet. The shared guide limits wireless hardware to the DW variants.

Automatic document duplex with an important Legal-size limit

The Brother MFC-8680DN is an earlier monochrome all-in-one for a wired office that needs more than basic one-sided document capture. It combines automatic printed duplex, automatic two-sided feeder scanning, a Legal-length glass and a multipurpose paper tray. Its central restriction is that those Legal capabilities do not extend to automatic feeder duplex: the original guide limits two-sided originals to 11.7 inches, while loose one-sided originals and glass capture reach fourteen inches.

Brother marks the exact model discontinued. The source records remain useful for understanding an existing installation, but current driver compatibility and machine condition need separate verification. The native software and physical connections must support the intended routine together.

Choose the capture route to match the original

The fifty-page feeder accepts an appropriate stack of loose documents under the maker’s specified conditions. Its simplex route reaches Legal. For a bound, delicate or otherwise unsuitable original, the glass also reaches Legal length. Color capture is supported even though the print engine produces monochrome pages; a generic black-and-white web-table label does not override the original scanner specification.

Letter and A4 two-sided originals can use the documented automatic feeder-duplex setting in the desktop scanner software. The software instructions expressly prohibit Legal in that mode and also exclude preview scanning and adjustment of the scan area. Those restrictions matter when a job needs precise cropping or a quick preview. The read original establishes automatic two-sided capture but does not identify its physical scanning mechanism, so it is not described as single-pass.

Standard wired interfaces and a separate flash-drive port

The machine includes USB, Fast Ethernet and parallel. The ordinary wireless interfaces in the shared guide belong to MFC-8690DW and MFC-8890DW. The product’s wording about sharing through Ethernet on a wired or wireless network does not install a Wi-Fi radio in the MFC-8680DN itself. A wired printer can be part of a wider office network without becoming a wireless printer.

The front USB direct interface is different from the computer’s USB connection. It supports specified flash-drive document routines and file formats; it is not evidence that every file or storage device will work. The native desktop arrangement documented here uses its compatible printer and scanner software. The original operating-system table separately limits server systems to network printing, so those rows are not used as evidence of desktop scanning.

Paper capacity and printed duplex stay distinct from capture

The included cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray fifty on the stated plain-paper basis. Both accommodate Letter, Legal and A4. A lower 250-sheet tray is optional, rather than part of the standard 300-sheet configuration. The multipurpose feed also handles suitable envelopes with their appropriate media settings.

Automatic output duplex in the US original covers Letter, Legal and Folio. This allows a useful mixed routine: capture a Legal original on the glass or through the simplex feeder, then print Legal on both faces. It does not establish automatic duplex scanning of that same Legal original. One-sided Letter output is rated up to thirty-two pages per minute, with duplex separately fourteen printed sides per minute. Neither figure establishes a recommended monthly workload.

Included high-yield toner is an exact package distinction

The original supply footnote expressly includes a high-yield cartridge with MFC-8680DN. Its TN-650 declaration is approximately 8,000 Letter pages under ISO/IEC 19752, whereas standard TN-620 replacement toner is approximately 3,000. The DR-620 drum has a separate approximate 25,000-page declaration with usage conditions. This package distinction should not be lost by borrowing a neighboring model’s inbox description.

Native Secure Print holds a protected job for four-digit panel release, with data cleared after printing or power-off. The instructions require removing an inserted flash drive before that release routine. The loaded cabinet weighs approximately forty-one pounds and uses the US 110–120 V edition. Allow paper, lid and maintenance clearance. A model with explicitly documented Legal automatic duplex capture is the better comparison when that particular original size dominates the work.
