MFC-8820DIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible local USB desk combining color Legal capture, black duplex output, native protected jobs and separately configured telephone fax.

The main tradeoff

Double-sided originals require manual turning; Ethernet is optional. Conflicting published inch dimensions and unloaded-weight basis prevent a reliable loaded body-fit claim.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can native USB combine all functions, Legal glass and color feeder capture, protected Legal duplex output and 300 included Legal sheets?

Qualifies with compatible native Windows software, suitable paper, correct duplex lever and separate telephone setup. The original feeder is simplex; the protected plan excludes BR-Script.

Can double-sided originals be captured automatically?

Fails: the original explicitly requires turning and refeeding the reverse side; automatic output duplex does not satisfy automatic feeder capture.

Is Ethernet scanning part of the included D configuration?

Fails: NC-9100h is optional on MFC-8820D; standard networking belongs to MFC-8820DN.

Automatic output duplex on the local D configuration

The Brother MFC-8820D is a discontinued monochrome laser all-in-one with color scanning, copying and telephone fax. Its useful fit is a compatible local USB desk that needs Legal originals, black two-sided output and native protected jobs. The exact D model includes automatic print duplex, but its Ethernet board is optional.

The original guide covers MFC-8420, MFC-8820D and MFC-8820DN with explicit differences. MFC-8820D includes a multipurpose tray and duplex output; standard networking belongs to DN. These distinctions are preserved rather than treating a similar suffix or cabinet as an interchangeable configuration.

Legal glass and a manually reversed original

The fifty-page document feeder accepts originals up to fourteen inches long, and the separate glass also reaches fourteen inches. That supports ordinary Legal capture through either the simplex feeder or appropriate individual placement on the glass. Color capture remains separate from monochrome printed and copied output. The scanner’s 600 × 2400 dpi optical declaration is distinct from its 9600 × 9600 interpolated figure. A larger interpolated setting does not change the original paper-size or handling limits.

Automatic output duplex does not establish automatic reverse-side scanning. The actual double-sided-original copy operation first captures one side, then tells the operator to turn the originals over and place them face up in the feeder again. That explicit handling step prevents describing this as an automatic duplex or single-pass feeder. A workflow requiring unattended two-sided originals needs different capture hardware.

A native driver restriction on protected release

The Secure key selects a stored user and job, then accepts the document’s four-digit password. The original expressly says that Secure Key is unavailable with Brother’s BR-Script driver. Consequently, the protected USB arrangement here uses compatible native Windows software; general BR-Script support is not enough to promise that same workflow.

Stored secure data clears after printing or power-off, with an eight-megabyte secure-data allowance stated in the original. USB computer scanning separately uses the actual scanner selection and image controls. The scan-key routine requires appropriate drivers and a running Control Center. Telephone fax has its own documented public-line setup rather than being a function of the USB cable.

300 included sheets and correct duplex setup

The actual original lists a 250-sheet cassette plus fifty-sheet multipurpose tray for MFC-8820D, giving 300 ordinary included sheets on its stated paper basis. Both accommodate Letter, Legal and A4. The optional lower cassette is excluded from that included total. Appropriate envelopes use their own multipurpose routine and its separate allowance up to three.

For automatic output duplex, the original permits A4, Letter and Legal. The rear adjustment lever must match A4 or the Letter/Legal group, and the compatible driver must select Use Duplex Unit. Manual Duplex is a different driver choice that asks for reinsertion. Correct stock, paper source and binding settings remain necessary even when the unit itself includes a duplex mechanism.

Speed and supplies without a guessed body fit

One-sided output is declared up to seventeen Letter pages per minute from the ordinary tray. Duplex is separately stated as 8.5 printed sides or 4.25 sheets per minute. These are manufacturer declarations rather than personal measurements. No recurring monthly recommendation or duty figure is inferred from speed or memory backup.

TN-530 and TN-560 replacements use five-percent Letter/A4 coverage declarations; the separate DR-500 drum has a use-dependent life. Included toner is not established by the cited sections. The US original specifies 120 V AC. Published inch dimensions conflict despite a shared millimeter set, and the original weight excludes drum and toner. Reliable loaded inch-body limits therefore remain unknown. Verify software, installed options and actual working clearance before relying on this earlier unit.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 17 one-sided Letter ppm when loading from ordinary tray. Output duplex separately up to 8.5 sides / 4.25 sheets per minute; copy 17 Letter is separate. Monthly recommendation and maximum duty remain unknown rather than inferred from speeds or memory backup.

Paper handling

Actual original includes 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP, not just 250 headline. Both Letter/Legal/A4 at 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis. Lower 250 optional; not included. Automatic output duplex A4, Letter, Legal with correct rear adjustment lever and Use Duplex Unit driver. Suitable envelopes up to 3 use separate MP routine.

Scanning arrangement

50-page simplex ADF on stated 20 lb basis reaches 14 in.; separate glass also reaches 14 in. for Legal. Actual double-sided-original copy routine requires operator turning/refeeding. Native USB TWAIN and color scan-key routines are positive; automatic output duplex does not add automatic original reversal. Optical 600 × 2400 dpi separate from 9,600 interpolated.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Hi-Speed USB and IEEE1284 parallel; NC-9100h Ethernet optional on 8820D, standard only 8820DN.32 MB expandable 160 MB, five-line display, PCL6/BR-Script. Native USB printer/scanner arrangement positive; USB is unsupported on Windows 95/NT4 and historical OS restrictions retained. Optional LAN capability is not included.

Supplies and declared yields

TN-530 replacement up to 3,300 and TN-560 up to 6,500 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage, not relabeled ISO. Separate DR-500 up to 20,000 pages with use-dependent conditions. Included toner yield remains unestablished in the cited actual sections.

Software and support

Native Windows Secure key uses user/job/four-digit password; data clears after printing or power-off. Original explicitly says Secure Key unavailable with Brother BR-Script driver, so protected plan is compatible native Windows driver only. Up to 8 MB secured data. USB Scan key needs appropriate drivers and running Control Center; telephone fax uses separate PSTN setup.

Electrical edition and setup

USA/Canadian original explicitly 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Web and original agree 532 × 444 × 469 mm but their printed inch conversions differ; numeric inch body limits remain unknown. Original 39.9 lb explicitly WITHOUT drum/toner; web 41.8 lb lacks matching basis, so loaded weight unknown. Allow Legal-lid, feeder, MP, rear-lever, output, cable and maintenance access.
