Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it scan Legal originals in color on both glass and feeder over its included Ethernet arrangement while printing Legal duplex with native PIN release?
Yes, through the supported configured Windows Scan-key-to-PC workflow and native printer driver. Both scanner routes accept Legal, included input totals 300 sheets, and the rear duplex lever must match Legal.
Explore this need in the finder →Does two-sided copying automatically read both faces of the original stack?
No. The actual operation requires turning the originals and feeding them again after one face has been read.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the included configuration meet a 500-sheet Legal input requirement?
No. It includes 300 ordinary sheets. The lower cassette is an option and is not counted.
Explore this need in the finder →A network MFP with automatic output duplex
The Brother MFC-8820DN is a discontinued monochrome laser reference for a compatible wired office that needs printing, copying, color scanning and fax. It includes the network board and an automatic output-duplex arrangement. The deciding document-handling limit is at the input: two-sided originals still require manual turning and refeeding. The ability to print a two-sided copy is not evidence that its feeder automatically reads both faces.
The exact US record names MFC-8820DN, and the original distinguishes it from MFC-8420 and MFC-8820D. Thirty-two megabytes of standard memory, a five-line display and PCL6/BR-Script support are documented. Use the actual model branch rather than combining the simpler feed hardware or optional network status of its neighbors.
Count the multipurpose tray as well as the cassette
The included cassette takes up to 250 ordinary sheets, and the MFC-8820DN multipurpose tray adds fifty. That makes 300 ordinary sheets at the stated weight. The web’s 250-sheet cassette headline should not erase the separately documented multipurpose stack. An optional 250-sheet lower cassette remains outside the included configuration.
Both standard feeds accommodate Letter, Legal and A4 within their stated ranges. Suitable envelopes and labels use the multipurpose route, with up to three envelopes kept separate from the fifty-sheet ordinary-paper capacity. Fan and align the paper, match the driver settings and keep the stack below its limit.
The actual automatic-duplex chapter positively supports A4, Letter and Legal. It requires setting the rear paper-adjustment lever to match the selected size. That physical setting is part of the workflow, rather than an incidental software choice. The native driver then uses the duplex unit to print the second face automatically.
Legal glass and feeder capture are both documented
The scanner glass accepts up to 8.5 by 14 inches, and the feeder accepts suitable Legal originals. The fifty-page feeder declaration depends on the original paper and environmental conditions. Color capture is supported even though printed pages and standalone copies are monochrome.
The double-sided-original copy routine is especially revealing. After the machine reads one face of the entire stack, the guide tells the user to turn the other face up in the feeder and press Start again. That manual step prevents this feature from being classified as automatic duplex capture or single-pass scanning.
For local computer scanning, the original explains the USB or parallel SCAN-key operation and the required Brother drivers and Control Center setup. Its computer-scanner instructions place the original face up in the feeder or face down on the glass, with document size, color mode and destination selected for the job.
Ethernet scanning uses its actual supported Windows routine
The NC-9100h Ethernet board is standard on MFC-8820DN. The network chapter explains registering a supported Windows computer, setting its network address or name and using the printer’s Scan key to choose the destination PC. It explicitly says that the Control Center selections configure the button rather than initiating a network scan from that desktop utility.
Keep that limitation attached to the network plan and verify the applicable operating system. The original has exclusions for direct network scanning on some systems. Fax follows the separate documented telephone setup; Ethernet PC functions do not replace the telephone-line requirements.
Native protected jobs, speed and supplies
The supported native driver can submit a password-protected job, which waits for selection and a four-digit password at Secure on the machine. The original allows up to eight megabytes of secured data and clears it after printing or power-off. The Secure key function is unavailable through the Brother BR-Script driver, so the protected-job arrangement specifically uses the applicable native driver.
The engine is declared at up to seventeen one-sided Letter pages per minute. Automatic duplex is separately stated as 8.5 printed sides, or 4.25 completed sheets, per minute. Neither figure establishes a recommended monthly workload.
TN-530 replacement toner is declared up to approximately 3,300 Letter/A4 pages and TN-560 up to 6,500 at five-percent coverage. DR-500 is a separate up-to-20,000-page drum declaration. Inbox yield remains unknown.
The US/Canada original specifies 120 V AC. Inch dimensions conflict with the web table, and the original’s 39.9-pound weight excludes drum and toner, so numeric body limits and loaded weight remain unknown. A documented automatic-duplex scanner is the useful alternative for unattended two-sided original capture.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 17 one-sided Letter ppm. Duplex separately 8.5 sides / 4.25 sheets per minute. No numerical recommended monthly volume established.
Paper handling
Included 250-sheet cassette + 50-sheet multipurpose tray, stated 20 lb / 80 g/m², total 300. Both support ordinary Letter/Legal/A4. Optional 250-sheet lower cassette excluded. Automatic A4/Letter/Legal output duplex requires matching rear paper-adjustment lever. Envelopes use multipurpose feed, up to three.
Scanning arrangement
Legal glass and simplex Legal feeder; fifty-page feeder declaration has original conditions. Actual two-sided-original copy routine requires manually turning/refeeding the stack, so automatic duplex and single-pass capture are unavailable. Compatible USB capture or configured supported Windows Ethernet Scan-key-to-PC routine.
Computer and mobile connections
NC-9100h 10/100 Ethernet standard on DN, plus USB and parallel. Network Control Center configures the Scan key but does not initiate network capture from that utility. Native four-digit Secure Print excludes BR-Script and permits up to eight MB secure data.
Supplies and declared yields
TN-530 up to approximately 3,300 / TN-560 6,500 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage. Separate DR-500 up to approximately 20,000 pages. Inbox yield unresolved.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual US/Canada power 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Inch dimensions conflict between exact web and original, so numeric body dimensions remain unknown. Original 39.9 lb excludes drum/toner; web 41.8 lb lacks a resolved loaded basis, so loaded weight remains unknown.
