Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it scan a full Legal page on the glass and print Legal automatically on both sides over USB?
Yes, using compatible desktop software and the correct rear duplex lever setting. The exact original establishes both Legal glass and Legal output duplex.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard MFC-8840D provide Ethernet computer scanning?
No. NC-9100h Ethernet is optional on the D model; the DN variant includes it.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the feeder capture both sides automatically?
No. The original routine requires turning and reloading the originals after the first sides are scanned.
Explore this need in the finder →A Legal-capable desktop scanner with automatic printed duplex
The Brother MFC-8840D is relevant to an existing office that needs monochrome printing, copying and fax alongside color computer scanning. Its larger glass accepts a full Legal original, and its fifty-page feeder handles loose documents. Automatic two-sided printed output is included. The important boundary is the final letter of the model: MFC-8840D has an optional network board, while MFC-8840DN includes network capability. A standard D model should be planned around its included computer interfaces.
Brother marks the exact US model discontinued. This is an earlier operating reference rather than a statement about current stock or software support. Confirm the actual unit, usable driver and installed accessories before depending on it for a working office routine.
Color capture does not mean color printing
The scanner can capture color, while printed pages and copies are monochrome. The original guide provides both Legal-length glass and Legal-length feeder dimensions, which is more useful than a general scanner headline. Use the glass when an original should not pass through a feeder, and use the feeder for an appropriate stack of loose pages. The fifty-page declaration has specified paper and environmental conditions rather than applying equally to every original.
Double-sided originals still need manual handling. The actual two-sided-copy instructions scan the first faces, then tell the user to turn the originals so their other faces can be fed. That is materially different from an automatic duplex scanner. The output unit can put images on both faces of paper, but it cannot remove the required turning and reloading at the input.
A multipurpose tray adds included capacity
The original 8840D arrangement combines a 250-sheet cassette with a fifty-sheet multipurpose tray. That makes 300 included sheets on the specified plain-paper basis. The shorter web-table capacity entry refers to the cassette and omits this distinction; the operating guide specifically assigns the multipurpose tray to the 8640D, 8840D and 8840DN. An optional lower tray remains additional hardware.
Letter, Legal and A4 are documented for ordinary paper input and automatic printed duplex. Set the rear duplex paper lever for the selected paper size as well as choosing the right driver setting. Suitable envelopes use the separate multipurpose routine and media settings. A mixed office workload needs those feed choices, rather than assuming every medium can follow the same two-sided path.
The original printer table declares up to twenty-one one-sided Letter pages per minute. Duplex is separately nine printed sides, or 4.5 sheets, per minute. Those are not interchangeable measures of a batch. The read sources do not establish a numerical recommended monthly workload, so rated speed is not used to invent one.
Included USB and parallel versus optional networking
USB provides the included desktop arrangement used here for printing and color capture. Parallel remains a separate legacy interface. Installing the optional NC-9100h board can add Ethernet functions, but an unseen board cannot be assumed from the family manual’s network chapter. Its network-scanning instructions also distinguish supported desktop systems from excluded systems, so the connection and software need to be considered together.
The physical Secure key is documented for releasing memory-held print data using a four-digit password. Use a compatible native desktop driver and its applicable controls. Fax operation separately uses the telephone line and the model’s 33,600-bit-per-second modem; having USB or an optional network board does not guarantee a particular telephone service will work.
Check the supply and placement details
The TN-540 replacement is rated up to 3,500 pages and TN-570 up to 6,700 at five percent Letter/A4 coverage. The separate DR-510 drum has a declaration of up to 20,000 pages with usage conditions. Remaining life and the supplied toner yield are not established by those replacement ratings.
The US/Canada version requires 120 V AC. Its listed 39.9-pound weight excludes drum and toner. Published inch dimensions disagree despite shared millimeter values, so measure the actual cabinet and allow working clearance. Compare a genuine automatic duplex-scanning model when two-sided originals are frequent, or an included-network variant when adding a board is impractical.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm. Duplex 9 sides / 4.5 sheets per minute. Recommended monthly volume unknown.
Paper handling
Original includes 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet multipurpose tray; optional lower tray excluded. Letter, Legal and A4 automatic output duplex require the matching rear lever setting.
Scanning arrangement
Color computer capture with Legal-length glass and simplex feeder. Original double-sided-copy steps require turning/refeeding the originals.
Computer and mobile connections
USB and parallel are standard. NC-9100h Ethernet is optional on 8840D, standard on 8840DN. Computer capture needs compatible desktop scanner software.
Supplies and declared yields
TN-540 up to 3,500 and TN-570 up to 6,700 Letter/A4 pages at 5% coverage. DR-510 up to 20,000 pages with usage conditions. Inbox yield unknown.
Electrical edition and setup
US/Canada edition: 120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Original inch dimensions of 21.28 × 17.76 × 18.76 conflict with US support values of 20.7 × 17.3 × 18.5 despite shared 532 × 444 × 469 mm values; numeric dimensions remain unknown. The 39.9 lb weight excludes the process unit; loaded weight remains unknown.
