Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can this earlier wired model duplex A4 and color-scan a Legal original on its glass with 300 input sheets?
Qualifies in the documented historical Windows network arrangement. The actual USA guide supports A4 print duplex, Legal glass and both included paper paths; check the exact supported software.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its two-sided copy setting automatically scan both sides through the ADF?
Fails: the actual two-sided-original copy instructions require turning and refeeding the originals. Automatic duplex applies to output, not automatic input capture.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I require built-in Wi-Fi from the standard DN package?
Fails: the DN includes Ethernet, while wireless requires a separate optional external print/scan server.

The Brother MFC-8840DN is an earlier monochrome laser all-in-one with color scanning and full Legal-size glass. The DN configuration includes the wired network board that was optional on other family members. It fits an established compatible office environment needing shared document printing and a real Legal flatbed.
The deciding limits are the older scanner software and the handling of two-sided originals. The actual guide restricts direct network scanning to specified Windows systems. Its duplex-copy instructions also require a person to turn and refeed two-sided originals; the printer does not automatically capture their backs through a duplex ADF.
Two-sided output is different from two-sided capture
The original USA guide explicitly supports automatic A4, Letter and Legal printing on both sides. The rear paper-adjustment lever must match the selected paper size. This is a documented regional routine, rather than an assumption based on the printer merely accepting those pages in a tray.
For a double-sided copy from a double-sided original, the guide first scans one side of the ADF stack, then tells the user to turn the originals face up on their other side and feed them again. That produces two-sided output with manual input handling. It cannot satisfy a requirement for unattended automatic duplex scanning or single-pass capture.
The flatbed supports originals through 8.5 × 14 in., and the simplex ADF accepts suitable Legal-length documents. Use the glass for appropriate bound or otherwise unsuitable feeder originals. Color scanning is supported, while paper prints and copies remain monochrome. These functions should not be confused with one another.
Count all the included input paths
The original operating guide specifies a 250-sheet cassette and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray for MFC-8840DN, using the stated 20 lb plain-paper basis. The 300-sheet included total counts both paths. A short specification’s 250-sheet figure describes the cassette, while a second optional 250-sheet cassette is a separate accessory.
Letter, Legal and A4 fit the documented included paths. The MP tray also handles suitable envelopes under its separate limits. Heavier stock and special media do not inherit the ordinary plain-paper capacity or an assumed duplex routine. Confirm the actual driver and tray settings against the paper loaded.
Keep network scanning within its documented systems
The included NC-9100h board supplies 10/100 Ethernet. The USA guide positively supports direct network scanning to Windows 98, 98SE, Me, 2000 Professional and XP, and expressly excludes Windows NT and Mac OS from that network-scanning function. A supported local USB scanning arrangement is a different route and does not erase the network restriction.
Check the exact driver and application before adopting this hardware with a present computer. The interface list also includes parallel and Full-Speed USB 2.0. Do not turn the version number into a claim that the printer has a different USB speed class. The optional NC-2200w external server is not built-in wireless hardware.
The control-panel Secure key releases held print data after a four-digit password with compatible software. Analog fax needs a suitable telephone connection. Neither a network cable nor a held-job password establishes a universal modern mobile workflow.
Verify the older physical package
The declared maximum is 21 one-sided Letter pages per minute from the cassette; automatic duplex is separately 9 sides per minute, or 4.5 sheets per minute. These are manufacturer figures, not our measured tests. The read surviving sources do not establish a numerical recommended monthly workload.
The USA guide specifies 120 V AC at 50/60 Hz and lists replacement toner yields at a historical 5% coverage basis, with a separate DR510 drum. Check remaining supplies and condition. The references disagree on inch dimensions, although both give 532 × 444 × 469 mm; measure the actual unit when space is tight. The listed 39.9 lb excludes drum and toner. Brother marks the model discontinued, making it an earlier reference for a deliberately compatible installation.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original USA guide: up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm from the cassette; automatic duplex separately 9 sides/minute, 4.5 sheets/minute. No numerical recommended monthly volume is established.
Paper handling
Exact original guide includes a 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray at 20 lb plain paper; both support Letter/Legal/A4. Optional lower cassette adds 250. Automatic A4/Letter/Legal duplex is explicit and requires the rear paper-adjustment lever setting.
Scanning arrangement
Color scanner with Legal-size glass and simplex ADF through 8.5 x 14 in. The two-sided-original copy instructions require turning the originals over and feeding them again; this is not automatic duplex ADF capture. ADF 50-page declaration uses stated Letter-paper conditions.
Computer and mobile connections
DN includes NC-9100h wired network board, USB and parallel. Direct network scanning has original Windows OS restrictions and excludes Windows NT/Mac OS. NC-2200w wireless print/scan server is optional, not included Wi-Fi.
Supplies and declared yields
Original USA guide lists TN540 around 3500 and TN570 around 6700 replacement pages at 5% Letter/A4 coverage, plus separate DR510 drum. No supplied starter yield, remaining life or current cost is inferred.
Electrical edition and setup
Original USA guide specifies 120 V AC 50/60 Hz. Manufacturer inch dimensions disagree across references although both list 532 x 444 x 469 mm; numerical body-limit fields remain unknown. The 39.9 lb figure excludes drum/toner, so complete loaded weight remains unknown.
